Seoul National University - Soul Taehakkyo (SNU) is the best public university in South Korea. Included in the TOP-30 innovative universities around the world. Seoul National University is considered a general institution of higher education and offers scientific, technical, and humanitarian disciplines for study.

Historically, the year of foundation of Seoul National University is called 1895, it was then that the order of the emperor began the countdown of the academic activities of this educational institution. The second significant date of modern SNU is called August 22, 1946, since it was on this day that ten small educational institutions joined the university.

At this university, students can study at faculties that rank high in international rankings. Soul Taehakkyo boasts five such faculties at once. The Faculty of Innovation and Engineering confidently holds the first line. The main advantage of admission is a huge number of programs, as well as serious developments that enable university students to gain a foothold in the scientific world.

How to get into a Korean university after high school

First of all, you need to understand that immediately after graduating from high school in Russia, you will not be able to apply to korean university for the undergraduate program. There are several reasons for this.
Firstly, the education systems of Russia and the Republic of Korea are different - if in Russia it takes 11 years to finish school at a desk, then in the Republic of Korea - 12.
Secondly, education at the universities of the Republic of Korea does not begin in September, as in Russia, but in March. The semesters last from March to August and from September to February, summer holidays - July, August, winter - December and February. The study is five-day, Saturday and Sunday are legal student days off.
Thirdly, a regular semester program at a Korean university means that you will listen to lectures along with local students, that is, in Korean. Of course, there are specialties in which lectures are also given in English, but most often the percentage of such lectures ranges from 35-45% of the total number of lectures.

And here the main question arises - is perfect knowledge of the Korean language necessary for study? No, but ... at least you need to know English perfectly (IELTS, TOEFL) - the requirements for the language level are put forward by each university separately.

If you have studied Korean, then this is just wonderful! The TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) certificate is especially welcome, but not lower than the average (level 4). It is this level that will allow you to study calmly in your chosen specialty together with Korean students.

So, you are satisfied with all these conventions and you still decided to enter the university of the Republic of Korea. You have two ways to get into a Korean university.

The first is to enter a Russian university in a specialty similar to a South Korean university, and after studying there for a year, apply to the university of the Republic of Korea.

The second is to enroll in Korean language courses at the university where you want to enroll for a bachelor's degree, unlearn them, pass TOPIK at level 4, and apply to the university.

Regardless of which path you choose for yourself, you need to choose a university and decide on a specialty that you can enroll in.

There are three "star" universities, and all of them are located in Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea.

They are abbreviated as SKY - Seoul National University (Seoul National University), Korea University (Korea University), Yonsei University (Yonsei University). In addition to SKY, other higher educational institutions are also popular in South Korea. For example, Ewha Womans University, Pohang University of Science and Technology, Kookmin University and others.

Different institutions may have their own admission requirements.
And it will be surprising for you that there is no direct connection between the prestige of the university and the amount of tuition fees, and studying, for example, at Seoul National University may be cheaper than in some provincial private universities.

In the Republic of Korea, each university is mostly strong in a particular direction. That is, you go to one university to study art, and medicine to a completely different one, regardless of the fact that the faculty you are interested in is also available at the first university. It is necessary to strictly make a choice of a university by specialty and view the ratings.

Be sure to check the official websites of universities.
Selection criteria, the required set of documents, tuition fees, application deadlines, etc. - all this can change and, as mentioned earlier, each university can present its own requirements.

Some educational institutions do not accept foreign students without knowledge of the Korean language.

Sometimes universities conduct interviews with applicants. If necessary, be sure to notify in advance.

If you are not confident in your abilities and want to make sure, you can try to apply to several universities at the same time.

Application forms can usually be found on the university website.

So, the above information gives a general idea of the possibility of entering a university in the Republic of Korea.

For starters, why did my daughter choose the Republic of Korea to study. The answer is simple - to enter the faculties that my daughter likes "environment design", and as an alternative to "journalism", there is no need to pass creative competitions (i.e., to prove that you can draw and compose, that you have printed articles), in contrast to similar faculties in Russia. Learning Korean at the college she attended prompted her to choose a second path to enter the university of the Republic of Korea, through language courses at the university. Another important factor is the cost of education. Korea, in comparison with the USA, Canada, England and other English-speaking countries, has a low cost of tuition fees, accommodation, etc. Foreign students are not required to make any additional contributions, which, coupled with a variety of grants, allows them to study without a strong economic burden. Recently, the government has begun to pay more attention to the development of grants for study, living, as well as assistance in finding housing and work after graduation, which has made studying in Korea even more attractive.

This choice was also influenced by her summer semester trip to Gimpo University (Fig. 1, 2 Kimpo), according to the result of studying there, she passed TOPIK at level 1. Of course, this is not enough for admission to the university, but it is a great start to learning Korean in the language courses at the university.

To say that she immediately decided on the university is to say nothing. After several trips to the Republic of Korea, she chose Sogang University. The choice fell on him, since the campus is located in the center of Seoul in the Sinchon district, the cost of language courses is lower (1,550,000 won for 10 weeks + 60,000 won entrance fee) than in other universities (1,700,000 won for 10 weeks) , and the reviews about these courses were laudatory - a lot of speaking practice. Sogang University Language School is famous for its teaching aids for learning Korean as a foreign language.

I initially approved of her choice, but just in case, I contacted my Korean colleague and asked if she approved of my daughter's choice. What was my surprise when I received a letter from her with a list of available courses at universities, and in second place on this list was Yonsei University, which my daughter could not even dream of, since it was believed that education there was very expensive. As it turns out, the language course at Yongse University costs 1,680,000 won for 10 weeks + 80,000 won entrance fee.

The cost difference was not so huge, and my daughter happily agreed to study at Yonsei University, which is one of the three most popular universities in the Republic of Korea.

So, the university has been chosen and the most crucial moment begins - registration and submission of documents.

Registration for courses passes through the submission of an online application on the website of the university program (https://www.yskli.com/_en/proc/p1.asp), after you carefully read all the requirements, you can start this not so simple procedure.

The regular program is offered on a year-round basis, so you have the right to choose when to start your studies at the most convenient time for you.

By the way, each program has a curator whose contact details you can find on the page of the program you have chosen. Remember, if you do not understand something, immediately write to your curator. And do not be afraid that they will not understand you - the main thing is to correctly formulate the request in English, unfortunately, there are no curators at the university who speak Russian.

It is important to remember that registration on the university website should be started only after you have prepared all the necessary documents:

1. Having a high school diploma - you will need to make a copy (copy the entire document with grades) and translate it into Korean or English and certify it with a notary.

2. A copy of a foreign passport (its validity must exceed the period of your intended stay in the territory of the Republic of Korea).

3. Completed application form. Please note that in the process of filling out the form on the site, you will need to write a motivation letter (in Korean or English) (try to answer in detail questions such as “why did you choose this program?”, “what do you intend to do in the future , after the end of this program?, etc.). You will also need 1 color photo (3.5X4.5) to upload on the registration site under the "My Page" tab.
4. Bank statement for at least $5,000 (or its ruble equivalent). You must immediately ask the bank for a certificate in English (on average, it takes 3-5 working days, it all depends on the bank).

5. Registration fee (80,000 won - non-refundable if you change your mind), tuition fee (1,680,000 won for 10 weeks). I want to note right away that in order to transfer payment in won to the university account, you must have an account in won, request an invoice from the Korean side, and most importantly, you cannot pay for a third person (i.e. for your child) in won - these are requirements of banks in the Republic of Korea. Therefore, there is only one way out: convert into dollars and pay at the exchange rate on the day of the transfer, since the university allows you to do this! (Fig. Yonsei payment card)

Naturally, you need to take care of where you will live. The university has a hostel, but places in it are limited, and as a rule, they are first of all provided to those who come to study under the bachelor's and master's programs. Therefore, you should indicate the need to obtain a place in the hostel already during the registration process (check the required line) and correspondence with the curator. Usually, a month before the start of the semester, the student is notified of the provision of a place in the hostel. Be prepared for the fact that in this case the van will need to pass a medical examination and receive a Health Certificate, the form of which will be sent to you by the curator or you yourself will download from the university website.

Dormitory at Yongse University costs (data for the 2015-2016 academic year):

Double occupancy in a room on the floor with shared bathroom and toilet - 1,149,000 won for 10 weeks;

Double occupancy in a room with bath and toilet - 1,464,000 won for 10 weeks;

Single occupancy in a room with bath and toilet - 1,957,000 won for 10 weeks.

I want to warn you right away - in the Republic of Korea, universities have separate dormitories for boys and girls. Entrance for guys is forbidden in the hostel for girls and vice versa too. And, of course, there is a curfew - after 24.00 entry is not possible, and if you are late, then you will have to spend the night off campus.

My daughter refused to live in a university dormitory, as she found a site on the Internet that allowed her to find a small room at a reasonable price. Living in a gossivon frees you from following campus rules, and it's perfect for active youth.

After determining the place of residence, you proceed to the registration of the application.

Your application for admission will be reviewed as follows:

Online application → submission of additional documents → study of documents → communication of the results of the study of documents (by e-mail) → payment of the registration fee → payment of tuition-→ for student visa recipients: granting a standard admission permit.

IMPORTANT: students from Russia must pay and register for two semesters at once in order to be able to apply for a D4 student visa.

After you have paid the entrance fee and tuition, the university sends documents in your name (in the name of the student) that will help you obtain a student visa at the Consulate of the Republic of Korea closest to you.

The closest to us was the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Vladivostok, and here are the documents they requested in order to issue my daughter a D4 student visa:

1. Original documents for payment and admission to Yongse University (they are sent to you from the Republic of Korea via EMS courier mail).

2. Copies of the school leaving certificate and tuition fees (copy of the document on the transfer of funds to the university account).

3. Sponsorship letter (original) - the sponsor can be friends in the Republic of Korea, parents or the student himself, if he can already afford to earn). If parents act as a sponsor, then it is necessary to provide the Korean side with a translation into Korean or English of the birth certificate, since this document proves the relationship between the student and the sponsor. In addition, parents need to provide a certificate from the employer about the salary level for the last 6 months to show that they will be able to support the student while studying in the Republic of Korea.

4. Visa fee - 80 US dollars.

In any case, you can always call the Consulate and clarify (8-423-240-22-22).

There is one more item that a Korean university will definitely require from you - insurance. You can apply for it in Russia, but be vigilant and pay attention to the fact that the insurance covers all risks in the territory of the Republic of Korea and the company that issues it to you does not work under a franchise. You are required to provide insurance to a Korean university before you start your studies there. For a more comfortable and safe stay in the Republic of Korea, I recommend that you take out Korean insurance (it can be done immediately upon arrival in the Republic of Korea for everyone who has a D4 visa category). The cost of such insurance ranges from $100 to $200, but it is guaranteed to work on the territory of this country.

Well ... all the formalities have been completed, a visa has been received and a ticket has been bought - you are one step away from starting your studies. Surely you are concerned about the question of how to get to the university campus from the airport. In correspondence with your curator, be sure to clarify this issue in advance to protect yourself from worries.

My experience of sending a child to study at a university has so far been limited to precisely those processes, the description of which is presented above.

However, I have a small review from my student Alice, who finished 11th grade 3 years ago and left to study in the Republic of Korea. She is currently a second-year student at the Tourism and Convention Department at Busan National University. Her studies at this university were preceded by a 2-year study of the Korean language in Russia at a school, then she went to Busan for language courses at this university (1,400,000 won in 10 weeks), entered the second level immediately (in her opinion, much it is more convenient and profitable to know at least a little the basic level of the Korean language - this makes it easier to understand in lessons that are conducted entirely in Korean). After studying for a year in a language course, she reached level 5, passed TOPIK to level 4, and applied to the Faculty of Economics, Department of Tourism and entered, since the main requirement for admission was a TOPIK level 4 certificate. Education at all universities in the Republic of Korea is paid, and Busan State University is no exception - the cost of studying at the faculty is 1,850,000 won per semester, according to the results of good and excellent academic performance, universities often make a 25-40% discount on subsequent tuition fees, and provide an opportunity to apply on a scholarship, the size of which often allows you to recover almost the full cost of education. Alice notes that all subjects are taught in Korean, there are some difficulties due to the Busan dialect, but she likes and fascinates her studies, because all the classes are built on lectures with presentations, and the professors are very good with foreign students.

As you can see, nothing is impossible! The main thing is to believe and go to the realization of your desires!

Modern South Korea has one of the most powerful economies in the Asian region with a high level of development of advanced technologies and innovations. The country has a highly educated and skilled workforce, low unemployment and crime, excellent infrastructure and favorable conditions for life in general. The Korean government is doing everything possible to stimulate the influx of foreign students, including through the introduction of new scholarships and grants, providing places in hostels, and assistance in finding a job in South Korea both during and after graduation.

Studying in South Korea for Russians, Kazakhstanis, Ukrainians and other foreigners will allow you to get high-quality knowledge, and a prestigious and respected diploma all over the world will greatly simplify the process of finding a job in Seoul or other major Korean cities. Average salaries in South Korea in 2019 exceed 2.5 thousand dollars a month, and in the capital the figures are even higher. In addition, it is an opportunity to study Korean history, culture and traditions. Next, we will consider the features of higher education in South Korea and highlight the best universities.

Higher education in South Korea

By analogy with China and Japan, the South Korean authorities set the goal of annually increasing the number of foreign students in local universities. By 2020, this figure should reach 200 thousand people. Today the country has more than 370 institutions of higher education, which are divided into universities and colleges. In the second case, the training period is usually 2-3 years and the training programs are aimed at obtaining professional education in a specific field.

There are 3 types of universities in South Korea:

    National(government funded)

    State(financed by regional authorities)

Private(financed by the university's own funds)

Almost every South Korean university offers students 3 degrees:

    Undergraduate(4-6 years old)

    Master's degree(2 years or more)

    Doctorate(3 years or more)

The main language of instruction at universities in South Korea is Korean, but many programs, especially master's programs, are taught in English. In addition, most universities offer intensive Korean language courses for foreign students, lasting from 3-4 to 10-40 weeks. The academic year in South Korea consists of two semesters, each lasting 16 weeks:

    Spring(from February-March to June).

    Autumn(from August to January).

The most prestigious areas of study in South Korea for foreigners are considered to be the field of information technology, as well as engineering and medical specialties.

Certificate of secondary education with duration of study at least 12 years old or a university diploma (as an equivalent).

Knowledge English or Korean at a level sufficient to complete the course. In the first case, TOEFL certificates (79-80 points) or IELTS (6.0 points or more) are accepted, and in the second, the TOPIK test for knowledge of the Korean language. Testing is conducted 5 times a year (January, April, July, October, November) and is controlled by the National Institute of International Education under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology of the Republic of Korea.

Entrance examination(test) - College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT). Testing takes place annually in November and includes a number of disciplines depending on the chosen program. In most cases, to be admitted to a Korean university, the result of the CSAT must be excellent.

In order to move to South Korea for the purpose of studying at a university, a foreigner must obtain student visa D-2 at the Korean Consulate in your country.

Recall that the standard academic year in South Korea begins in March, and the application deadline ends in September-November. Some universities allow you to start your studies in September. Despite the fact that about 25% of courses at universities in South Korea are taught in English, knowledge of Korean at least at a minimum level is simply necessary for faster adaptation and integration into the local society.

Tuition fees in South Korea

Tuition fees at universities in South Korea vary by institution and course/program. In national and state institutions, the average cost is about 4000-9500 dollars per year. In private Korean universities, with rare exceptions, studying is at least one and a half times more expensive. It is worth noting that the tuition fee for South Korean citizens and foreigners is no different. It is most expensive to live in the capital of the state - Seoul, especially if you rent an apartment privately.

Many Korean universities offer full-fledged scholarships to gifted international students that cover between 30% and 100% of tuition fees. In addition, there are a number of government programs for foreigners in the country that fully or partially compensate for the cost of housing and education. In addition to tuition fees, for a comfortable stay in South Korea, a foreigner will need at least 800-1000 dollars per month for food and leisure.

In many countries of the world, higher education opens up great prospects for a person, and medical specialties are traditionally considered prestigious. They are difficult to learn, more time is required for training, and the educational process for a doctor never stops. All medical universities in Korea are among the prestigious ones, and their graduates are valued all over the world. This is connected not only with the profession, but also with the education system in the country itself - it is considered one of the highest quality in developed countries.

In addition, many local universities occupy high positions in the world rankings of the best educational institutions. The pricing policy is also important - the cost is quite acceptable, and much lower than the prices of European educational institutions. To enter a medical university in South Korea, you need to make a lot of effort and have the appropriate knowledge of the language. For residents of Russia and the CIS countries, education in Korea can begin only after completing the first year of the university at the place of residence.

We collect the documents required for admission

From year to year, the list of papers required for admission changes somewhat, and the requirements of private and public universities are often very different. If you want to enroll in a specific medical university in Korea, you need to start a dialogue with the administration as early as possible - ideally a year before the start of the academic year. At the same stage, you can clarify the availability of grants and discounts in order to more accurately plan future expenses. In most cases, the initial package of documentation that the university will request for the current year looks like this:

  • A resume with the exact data of the applicant, addressed to a specific university.
  • Copy of passport, international passport.
  • Evidence or certificates confirming English/Korean language proficiency.
  • Motivation letter.
  • Confirmation of the fact of receiving education at the place of residence.
  • A copy of the diploma and statistics of grades from high school, college or university (last place of study).
  • A bank statement or a certificate from the work of the parents about their solvency.

Copies provided must be in color and high resolution. They must be certified by a notary or embassy. Documents, forms and applications must be in English or Korean. If the diploma, etc., is in another language, it must be translated and notarized.

Applying for a student visa

A visa is issued to a student who has reached the age of majority, otherwise you will need to prepare a birth certificate and permission from guardians / parents in addition to other papers. In the event that the inviting party, which is the medical universities of Korea, issues a certificate for a visa, the process will be greatly simplified. As a rule, they do not refuse such a service to foreign students. The list of papers that you will need to provide to obtain a student visa looks like this:

  • Current general civil and international passport.
  • 2 high quality color photographs.
  • The questionnaire, filled out correctly, in English or Korean.
  • Documents about education.
  • If available, a certificate for issuing a visa.
  • Confirmation of solvency - in its role, an extract from a personal current account is suitable, on which there should be an amount of at least $ 9-15,000, it is not recommended to withdraw it within a month.
  • Confirmation of the fact of payment of the fee.
  • Proof of enrollment at Korea Medical University.
  • Insurance.

Features of higher education in Korea

The education system in the country was formed for a long time, and eventually absorbed the best of world practice. Thanks to this, diplomas from local universities are highly valued by employers around the world. One of the advantages of acquiring knowledge in this country is the affordable cost. It cannot be called low - for a semester for honey. faculty will have to pay about $ 7,500. This amount does not include administrative fees, accommodation and utilities, travel, literature and manuals. As a result, the total cost increases by 20-30%. However, it is several times cheaper than studying in Europe. There are several features of the process that international students need to be aware of:

  • The beginning of the school year is in the spring, not in September.
  • Students have to independently choose subjects for study, except for specialized ones, so you should consider this issue carefully.
  • Foreign students are allowed to work part-time - this allows you to better learn the language, get more practical skills and earn extra money (no more than 20 hours per academic week).
  • More than 10 types of grants and scholarships “shine” for excellent students, which significantly reduce the cost of higher education.
  • Opportunity to enter graduate school after graduating from a university in your own country.

Scholarships and grants from the state

As part of the Study in Korea program, aimed at increasing the number of qualified specialists, constant financial support for students has been organized. The number of applicants for grants is increasing every year, which is associated with an increase in the level of academic performance - material incentives turned out to be an effective measure. The main part of the grants is intended specifically for foreign students.

To receive a scholarship, a student needs to apply to any ministerial department - education, culture, international relations or information exchange. Among the many types of grants for foreigners, there are some of the most interesting:

  • Korean Government Scholarship Program. The program is designed to fully pay for scientific internships, doctoral studies or undergraduate studies, lasting up to a year. All expenses for study, research activities are covered, life insurance is paid. Once every six months, the purchase of educational literature is paid.
  • Supporting Excellent Self-supporting Foreign Students. The system works for all international students and provides for the issuance of 500,000 won per month - a report on where the funds are spent is not required. The same program pays for consulting programs. Applications must be submitted in January.
  • Supporting Exchange students. A program for exchange students, and only students with high academic performance (at least 80%) can count on participation. Monthly assistance is provided in the amount of 800,000 won, up to 1.7 million won for air travel, and up to 15,000 won for monthly accommodation.

Each institute has additional scholarship programs. There are a lot of them, and the main part is designed for well-performing students. The amount of assistance varies, and coverage can range from 50% to 100% of tuition costs. Grants and grants are also allocated by various international foundations, charitable organizations, research structures, interested enterprises and companies.

The best universities with medical faculties

Almost every university can be proud of its graduates, however, there is a kind of rating that includes the best of the best.

  1. Seoul National University.
  2. Korean Leading Science and Technology Institute.
  3. Korea University
  4. Yonsei University.
  5. Sungkyunkwan University.
  6. Pohang University of Science and Technology.
  7. Hanyang University.
  8. Kyung-hee University.
  9. Busan National University.
  10. Korean Catholic University.
  11. Kyungbuk National University.
  12. University of Ulsan.
  13. Inha University.
  14. Konkuk University.
  15. Cookmin University.

Any of them provides its students with the opportunity to become a true professional in their chosen specialty. Here, not only basic knowledge is given, but also abilities for research activities are developed, which is why there is such a large number of significant scientific discoveries in this republic. After graduating from a bachelor, master or doctor of medical sciences, they will be happy to be hired not only in the leading clinics of South Korea, but also in other countries.
