Do-it-yourself log bed. Log bed: choice of material and furniture decor

Since this is furniture from waste, for obvious reasons, the most painstaking work is the selection process of the material, which will need to be combined not only in size, but also in color and surface texture. Also, in the process of assembling log furniture with your own hands, quite a lot of time is spent on performing operations to connect parts (structural elements). You will learn more about the production process below using the example of making the back of a homemade bed from logs.

§ How wood is selected. Important point!

Trees exist wherever a person lives, unless, of course, it is a desert or steppe. There will always be some plant maintenance firms, energy companies, farms, construction sites clearing land for plantings, and, of course, landfills. Also, do not forget about the forest washed ashore. In order for log furniture to be of high quality and durable, you should carefully choose wood. It is not necessary to take timber with traces of damage by woodworms; the whole bark should be peeled off on the spot, since various insects can live in it, the appearance of which in the workshop is undesirable.

After the selection of the base material, the production of structural particles, for example, the back log cabin bed takes only a couple of hours. First you need to cut out the racks, horizontal strapping, as well as the balusters of the bed headboards. After that, with a metal brush, you need to remove all dirt, as well as roughness from the surface of the workpieces. Then the balusters and strappings are equipped with spikes cut on a special tool. The electric planer must be fixed on a loop so that it hangs over the part itself. The part is clamped on the lathe bed. The length of the spikes of the strapping should be 5 cm, and the spikes of the balusters - 4 cm.

After that, with a two-handed electric drill with a Forstner drill, you need to drill sockets for spikes in the legs and harnesses. The peculiarity of this operation is that, unlike bars and boards, which have one or another standard size, all logs are different and the nests in them must be selected one at a time, carefully fitting them to the mating parts each time.

Final assembly of the product. Dry assembly, gluing log furniture, as well as the installation of clamps, are similar to ordinary carpentry operations. Although there is one caveat. After smearing the nests with catalyzed gap-filling glue (mostly casein glue with transverse intermolecular bonds is used) and assembling the structure, take the back by the horizontal straps and hit the back strongly with the leg on the floor. Only after this operation can we assume that the spikes are firmly seated and take hold of the clamps.

Particular attention needs to be paid finishing log furniture. Wood is sanded with an abrasive of 80 microns, cedar is sometimes sanded with an abrasive of 120 microns, and maple butcher logs, as well as sawn beams from recycled materials, get 220 micrometer emery. Wood stain is not pickled and thus retains its natural warmth and reliability. For even more furniture durability from waste, logs are covered with several (mostly two) layers of polyurethane. On chairs and tables made from sawn beams, as well as maple butcher logs, a couple of layers of teak oil are applied with intermediate polishing of each of the layers, wax (paraffin) "briwoks" and then rubbed with a leather circle to a perfect shine.

There are enough firms and individual craftsmen on the market who are engaged in the manufacture of such furniture. It is eco-friendly, practical and very beautiful, looks great in any interior. It can be bought from a ready-made sample or ordered according to your own preference. Approximate prices: chairs and armchairs made of logs - from $100, cabinets and chests of drawers - from $110, log beds - from $280, tables with benches - from $220. The cost depends on the type of wood used, its quality, the amount of consumable materials, the amount of work and the complexity of the design. Therefore, the price can vary greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer.

In addition to furniture, you can also make your own house from waste. The trend towards the maximum use of woodworking waste is especially relevant in our time. After all, this applies to natural materials and natural resources that are reproduced for a long time.

The remains of building materials are paid blanks for the production of home furniture, household items, and simply interesting homemade decorative items. To realize your fantasies, you will need a minimum set of tools and skills that were obtained during the construction of a house or cottage from a log.

Narrowing the spectrum

Without spreading our thoughts, let's dwell on a piece of furniture that, after the table, occupies the main place in the furniture hierarchy - these are beds. It turns out that they can also be made from ordinary logs at home.

But here you still have to choose between several types of beds:

  • Beds completely assembled from logs;
  • Combined assembly beds, here, in addition to logs, there is a board, sometimes plywood or OSB;
  • Beds made of logs with decorative headboards.

Let's start with the choice of material

Practice shows, no matter how meticulously the material for building a house is chosen, segments that are:

  • Or they have wood defects in the form of knots and cracks;
  • Or those that have received deformations and defects as a result of improper transportation, storage and other technological violations;
  • Also, material with a clear change in the color of the wood goes to the scrap.

Advice!
The bed will not experience such loads as the wall of a log house, will not be subjected to harsh atmospheric influences.
Therefore, if, during the sanding of wood, the log acquires its natural color, the cracks are not deep, and will not affect the supporting properties of the log, then such material can be safely taken to work.

The project is just a log

The bed is assembled only from a log:

Into the piggy bank!
There can be a lot of options for models of such furniture structures, so in this section we cover only basic issues related to the methods of fixing logs and the possibilities of obtaining certain modules.

  1. Frame assembly.
    Here it is possible to apply several assembly techniques at once:
    • Creating a box of 2-3-4 crowns using the “paw” or “bowl” method;

Note!
The “into the bowl” method is less in demand, since the bed frame will be much wider than the bed itself.
However, if the room is large enough and the interior is formed using decor in a folk or fairy-tale style, this technique is appropriate.

    • Leg shaping. Legs in beds are not a mandatory attribute, but given the need for air circulation, it is better to make them;

Advice!
If you do not make legs from vertically located logs, then in the lower log you can make a notch 3/5 of the length in the center up to half the log high.
This will be quite enough for normal air circulation.

    • Fixing logs to each other. In addition to the corner assembly by the indicated methods, the fixation of the logs is carried out with dowels. At the same time, one dowel can reliably strengthen the logs of the entire structure or the back or side parts at once.

  1. Preparing the recess for the mattress.
    To prepare a place for the mattress, you will have to do the following:
    • In the upper log, prepare semicircular grooves with a step in the width of the stacked half-log;
    • We cut the logs, which will play the role of supports, with a mini circular saw along;
    • We lay the half-logs in the grooves and fasten them with self-tapping screws of the required length.
  1. Back extensions. Usually one or two segments of logs are enough to form the backs, but their number can be large. The connection of logs in the backs also occurs with the help of dowels.

Note!
There is a technique for forming legs with vertically standing logs, while cutting wood is made in the logs themselves to fix both the side logs and the logs that form the back.
In this case, a log bed resembles a regular one.
The parts are connected with self-tapping screws for furniture, or with bolts, which is more reliable.

We start to combine

The assembly of the bed can be much faster, and the product itself is much prettier, if you use boards in addition to logs.

In this case, the board can go both to form a bed under the mattress, and to form the side walls.

Advice!
For frame construction, a 50 mm thick wooden board is the best option; a 30 mm board is enough to hold the mattress.

  • There are several connection options, but the basic techniques are the same. To form the frame, the boards are joined with special grooves, their fixation in the log-legs also occurs in the prepared grooves;
  • To hold perpendicular boards in the side boards, you can: prepare the grooves, attach the fixing bars from the inside, just nail the board on top.

Note!
When combining materials, the number of perpendicular boards can be reduced, and the step of their fixation can be increased by laying fragments of plywood or OSB on them, which formed either floors or partitions.

Decor in furniture

The most common decoration option is the use of curved branches and tree trunks.

A fancy grid is formed from them, to which a certain edging is attached, or it fits into the prepared frame-back.

Note!
If you want to decorate your bed in this way, then do not forget to remove the bark and not only dry yourself.
Then you can cover the composition with varnish and stain. Although the do-it-yourself wood processing option is applicable to all wooden structures.

Finally

Log furniture is reliable, natural and beautiful. The instructions have already been described, there is a small nuance left before the video in this article will reveal the topic visually. There he is.

If you visit any large furniture store, it will always have a wide selection of beds of various types and modifications. If you wish and have the opportunity, you can buy any, but it often happens that one or another option does not fit the existing interior of the house, or the bed is too large and bulky, or simply does not suit the quality and style of execution. In this case, there is a difficult, but sometimes the only way out: making a bed out of wood with your own hands.

materials

Since it is high-quality materials that are the key to the durability of furniture, if you choose them arbitrarily, there will be much more advantages from this. Of course, making a bed with your own hands will take much more time and effort than simply buying it or ordering assembly from professional furniture makers. However, personal choice and constant control over the quality of your creation will eventually bear fruit and pay off with a long service life of such an important piece of furniture made by yourself.

Choosing as a material wood mass, it must be borne in mind that it has a rather high price and certain difficulties in terms of preparatory work and the very process of making beds.

In the absence of proper experience in handling the array, it is better to choose simpler options, although any product created, for example, from solid pine or oak, will look very beautiful and differ in enviable strength.

A bed made of natural logs looks very impressive, but here there is both the difficulty of acquiring them, and the unreality of installing such a bed in small rooms.

Taking into account the specifics of working with an array, the most common in use are different types of lumber: it will be much easier to create a bed yourself from a bar or planed or cut boards.

The only nuance that you should pay special attention to when buying them is good drying: if the product was originally made from wet timber, when it dries, the structure will begin to creak or deform.

Shield bed- also inexpensive and a good option. Furniture panels are rather massive boards, which are glued together from separate parts of wood.

Such a product will please with beauty and practicality, the strength of the shields allows even carving on them, but, as in working with solid wood, certain skills will be needed here: the specificity of furniture panels implies the presence of internal stresses that should be handled correctly in practice.

Fine wood fiber fraction (MDF)- an inexpensive and fairly durable material, which, with additional processing (for example, with varnishing), looks quite beautiful.

On sale you can find MDF boards both with and without a finished varnish coating, which will be a significant plus if the manufacturer plans to carry out the processing on his own.

Particleboard or chipboard- also a material familiar to many, which is easy to cut and process, however, it should be borne in mind that it is better to use it not for the manufacture of load-bearing bed structures, but for drawers, backs and decor elements. If the plate is already sold with lamination, you can save a lot of time.

Fittings for a future bed are better to purchase from durable steel than from aluminum. Aluminum elements are certainly much cheaper, but steel is much stronger, and it would be better not to save on this, but to take care of quality from all sides.

It is important to keep in mind that the metal fasteners will need to be tightened as the wooden base dries, and if the fasteners are steel, the bed will take on all the load at once, and there will be no problems with structural strength in the future.

Choose a size

First of all, it is important to determine the size of the future bed: the comfort of sleep and the availability of proper rest depend on them.

The optimal length of a bed can reach 200 cm, and the width should be selected, depending on individual preferences and physique.

By the way, the usual classification of beds (single, double and "one and a half") was once developed based on the parameters of width, not length, which should be especially taken into account when planning sizes and drawing up a drawing.

A single small bed can have a width of 90 and a length of 80 cm, which is optimal for the manufacture of children's models. You can also consider an option with dimensions of 100x100 cm, if the area of \u200b\u200bthe children's room allows. A bed of 150x150 or 150x190 cm is already close to the parameters of a one-and-a-half, however, the optimal dimensions for an adult are 150 cm wide and 190 cm long. You can also increase them if the room has enough space, and the bed will not look bulky in the overall picture.

When drawing up a drawing, it is also important to take into account the fact that the best bed length for a person of any age should always be 15 cm more than his actual height - with a margin, which will provide maximum comfort and freedom during sleep.

There is one more subtlety that must be taken into account when making a bed: the older the person, the higher it should be.

Of course, an important part of any bed is a mattress. It should be purchased in advance in order to plan all dimensions based on its parameters. A standard orthopedic mattress can be from 1.5 to 2 m, with a height of 25 cm. In extreme cases, you can also make it yourself - from foam rubber and other suitable materials.

Device

A simple bed of beams and boards can be made quite quickly, following a certain algorithm of actions.

For this you will need:

  • boards 2 pcs (dimensions 250x30cm) - for the side walls of the bed;
  • boards 3 pcs (dimensions 200x30cm) - front, back of the bed and headboard;
  • beams 5 pieces 4x4cm, length 200 cm - the supporting structure of the bed and its legs;
  • slats 27 pieces 150x4x2 cm;
  • self-tapping screws and other accessories, depending on the need;
  • varnish, "stain", building glue for wood.

You will also need a small standard set of tools: a screwdriver, an electric jigsaw, a hacksaw, a planer.

To clean the elements - sandpaper, preferably fine-grained, for measurements - a tape measure, for accurate knowledge of the dimensions of the corners - a square, a simple marking pencil.

Cutting a tree should be carried out slowly, having previously made markings on it with a simple pencil, or take a cutter and make marks with it. Usually, in the process of manufacturing elements, you have to make several of the same. In this case, the first part is first cut out, which will serve as a template, and all the rest will already be made based on its parameters.

When sawing, it is necessary to immediately clean it with fine-grained sandpaper.

All corners of the bed must be strictly straight, 90 degrees, therefore, measurements will have to be done often and carefully, and only then fasten the parts together. Otherwise, the bed will not be strong and will quickly break under the weight of the human body. All elements are first carefully glued with building glue and only after that they are securely attached to the tree using self-tapping dowels.

We should not forget to remove the remaining glue, because their presence will greatly complicate the subsequent processing steps.

After cutting all the details, you can proceed directly to the assembly and installation of the bed.

The location of the bars that perform the function of a support must be determined by dividing the length of the front and then the back wall by three. Write down the resulting number. Keep in mind that the mattress should always be at least 5 cm deep in the bed + necessarily another 2 cm (thickness of the rails) and + 4cm (thickness of the bars of the longitudinal elements). The final figure is 11 cm. It should be noted at the top of both walls of the future bed, front and back - there the bars for the main support will be fastened.

The bars are screwed on from the inside. When carrying out fastening, it is important to monitor the screws so that they do not “cut through” the surface of the product - in order to avoid damage to the aesthetic appearance of the bed. The length of the screws is usually calculated in advance.

After screwing the bars, 7 cm are measured (from the top of the board for the side parts) and a mark is made with a ruler and a pencil. The bars are screwed to the side of the bed with a retreat of 6 cm on each side. After that, 2 more small pieces of bars are vertically attached to the edge of the bars - with a gap of 20 mm to the edge of the board.

The headboard is mounted to the wall in front. All glued surfaces and edges are carefully smeared with glue. The blanks are glued as tightly as possible so that there are no cracks and unnecessary gaps.

The headboard is reinforced with several slats (usually three). The slats are glued with construction adhesive and additionally screwed. All finished elements are processed with a stain - this way they will acquire the desired color and shade. After staining, as usual, varnish treatment follows, which is recommended to be carried out twice.

After all the elements are ready, we proceed directly to the final assembly. We make a frame, fastening its parts with self-tapping dowels. Two bearing beams are laid on the support beams, previously screwed to the walls at the back and front - and fixed. To give the structure maximum stability, legs are additionally attached to the supporting bars - it is better to do this from the inside, for the purpose of aesthetics.

The supporting structure is ready and securely fastened and now it is possible to lay and screw the slats, leaving a uniform distance of 4 cm between them. The space between the walls of the bed and the slats should be at least 2 cm. Finally, the backrests are mounted, a mattress is placed on the bed and you can start using it .

Self-made podium

As you know, the catwalk bed in its many variants is becoming more and more popular in our country. Furniture craftsmen invent very interesting and practical ways to install just such structures in any place: from a large country house to an ordinary small-sized “Khrushchev”, where it can be very problematic to place a large amount of furniture. There are plenty of podium models, however, the most compact of them is exactly the one where there are several under-bed drawers for linen and other things.

Due to the fact that the presence of such boxes inside the structure can significantly free up the surrounding space, this version of the podium is the most popular among owners of small apartments and rooms.

Those who want to get a compact podium bed often ask how to make a simple model with drawers with their own hands.

Speaking about the simplicity of this model, a reservation should be made that we are not talking about a monolithic, but about a frame base, which must be as strong as possible in order to withstand the upcoming loads.

Linen drawers located inside the podium or under the bed have the disadvantage of constantly collecting dust, because they are located next to the floor. However, this disadvantage is usually not taken into account when there is no other way out, but there is a desire to save the surrounding space in the best possible way.

Despite the fact that such a model in everyday life is considered quite simple, a lot will have to be taken into account when planning. The floor has its own mechanics and certain properties, and the partitions of the bed will interact with it all the time. This is another reason why the frame structure must have an increased degree of strength.

For self-production of this version of the podium bed, it is better to use lumber wood materials. This will ensure the strength of the frame in order to avoid subsequent troubles, moreover, the strength of monolithic bars allows you to "bypass" possible problems with load distribution in the following way.

The spar is calculated by analogy with the design of the frame - the "ridge", which is usually installed on trucks designed for heavy weights.

This means that the basis of the frame must necessarily be a strong and thick beam, which will take all the loads emanating from the transverse beams, "splayed" in different directions.

For the manufacture of such a "ridge" it is better to take two large beams 100x50 in size. The remaining beams of the supporting structure are made of 100x100 bars. Other details can be made either also from wood (if time and financial resources permit), or from chipboard, which will go well with any kind of wood materials, provided that it will not be used for the load elements of the bed.

It should be remembered that particle boards, due to their peculiarity to delaminate, do not accept either alternating or concentrated types of load.

However, with a strong desire, you can make a podium bed on a frame completely from chipboard. It will be a panel structure, placed on a cross, which serves as the main support, with a complete absence of small details. The boards are installed "edge" on the floor and support the flooring from below. The main crosspiece with overlays takes the main part of the entire load.

Of course, the shield plates must be thick enough, at least 30 mm.

The drawers will fit inside, but this option has one significant drawback: due to the fact that it is impossible to arrange the cross in another way, half of the space under the bed will remain unused.

Of the two proposed options for a podium with drawers, you can choose any one that will be the most suitable and possible to manufacture.

How to make a wooden bunk bed?

A wooden bunk bed is a great option when it comes to how to arrange two beds in the nursery or free up as much space as possible for the child in the room. The cheapest and at the same time durable materials that can be used in the manufacture are boards and pine timber.

When calculating the amount of materials and drawing up a drawing, it is important to take into account the distance from the lower tier to the bottom of the upper one - its recommended value is 85 cm. This will provide a comfortable seat below not only for a child, but also for an adult.

Below are the main elements of a bunk bed with their standard sizes (one element):

  • vertical racks 38x76x1730 mm;
  • strengthening racks 38x76x1730 mm;
  • elements of the supporting structure (frame) 38x140x2030 mm;
  • headboard slats (bottom and top) 20x140x914 mm;
  • slats for the footboard (bottom and top) 20x140x914 mm;
  • plank in the center (ibid.) 20x90x914 mm;
  • side safety fence 20x90x1800 mm;
  • stair railings 20x90x1510 mm;
  • stair steps 20x64x482 mm.

The supporting frame is assembled from four pre-prepared boards. For the reliability of the frame, an additional bar is longitudinally glued to the board and screwed to it with screws.

The bars glued to the plank that supports the mattress longitudinally will act as a base on which you need to lay the slats across.

Railings for railings are made from a simple processed board, and stair railings are made from boards with the possibility of framing.

The places for fixing the steps must be designated in advance, and during assembly, make sure that the metal elements fixing them do not come into contact with the frame fastening fittings. The foot and head parts of the bed are fastened with screws - at the bottom with the supporting structure. Self-tapping screws from the edge should be filed.

The second tier is also assembled in a similar way, and the fence with a ladder is also attached. As for the fence, if there is a desire and time, it can also be made on the side of the wall. Treat the finished bed with stain and varnish, let it dry - and mattresses can be laid.

It is sometimes believed that using ordinary nails in the manufacture of furniture is already outdated and impractical, but this is not so. Nails can not only become the cheapest piece of furniture, but also facilitate the work of the carpenter, without requiring any preparatory actions in the form of drilling with a drill.

Probably, few people realize that ordinary pallets from building materials can be used as the basis for a solid wooden bed.

They win not only with their cheap price, but also with their good quality, because bad wood is unlikely to be used for transporting and storing heavy bricks.

In addition, over time, the use of such pallets for their intended purpose, the tree can sit down and dry perfectly, which is its undeniable advantage.

Pallets can be made more decent by sanding and connected to each other with long self-tapping dowels. To give them a minimal aesthetic appearance, they can also be painted and varnished. In order to make a full-fledged double bed, you need only four of these construction pallets, and from eight pallets or more you can build any kind of podium.

For the manufacture of bed legs, do not use chipboard: as already mentioned, this material, despite its widespread use, is not suitable for the manufacture of parts that can withstand a serious load. If you take this lightly and make the legs of the bed from wood chip material, at best they will delaminate, and the bed will constantly creak, and at worst they may simply not withstand the weight.

The bed itself is designed not only to support the mattress, but must also have properties that would allow the load to be evenly distributed between it and the bed frame. The boards on the bed should be laid freely according to the principle of lamellas, and the plywood shield for the mattress itself is already placed on top.

Lamellar boards are best laid transversely rather than longitudinally, because this is how they bend down slightly in accordance with the movements of the body.

Beautiful Bedroom Interior Ideas

For a children's room, there are a large number of ways to make a bunk ensemble, which may consist of more than just two beds.

For example, there are options in the form of transformers, when in the daytime, using a simple mechanism, the bed below easily turns into a desktop. If desired, it is also possible to make such a kind of two-story structure with your own hands.

For children of preschool and primary school age, it would be an excellent solution to make railings and stairs of beds from improvised means, or simply snags and small logs found in the forest, sanded and processed in the usual carpentry ways. Such an unusual interior will decorate the nursery, and will always bring joy to the child and the possibility of additional space for games.

A pull-out bed from the podium will be the best solution when you need to create a cozy interior space in a small room. In the daytime, it can be removed inside the podium, thereby freeing up space for receiving guests.

The solid frame of such a product, which is based on a ridge structure made of massive timber, will allow you to place a cozy office with a computer desk and shelves for books at the top of the podium. If you take care of the exterior finish of this option with high-quality laminate made from natural materials, the room will look just great, despite its small area.

A large bedroom in a country house is an excellent opportunity to place a luxurious double bed of any desired design there.

A bedroom with a carved bed always looks very attractive, and if you master woodcarving on your own, wide open spaces for creativity open up.

You can cut out figures of various animals or birds and attach them to the backs and foot of the bed, and if you want to carve patterns, high quality wood will do it.

By the way, cheaper materials, such as chipboard, are also not afraid of such work and are quite suitable for using an acceptable and simple carving technique.

Using pallets for building materials to make a bed, a real creative craftsman will surely be able to find uses for the holes in them.

The pallets themselves can be disguised, properly sanded and painted in some unusual color, and inside the holes you can place absolutely safe lighting for the bed in the form of LED lamps or lamps. They do not heat up and are quite suitable for such independent design.

If the bed is made in the form of a simple podium with a mattress lying on top, this also opens up huge scope for creative thought. After all, the head of such a bed can be arranged in any way: for example, get old boards from the pantry, wash them, varnish them on top, write something on them in an incomprehensible language, attach something to the wall at the head of the bed - and a mystical "budget" bedroom in the style handmade is ready.

Fans of everything warm and soft can buy several pillows of the same shape and color and also fix them at the head - you get a kind of panel with a touch of simple and cozy home humor.

Colored decorative pillows in large sizes can be attached to a metal pipe embedded in the wall using strong colored tapes. It is important to remember that feather pillows are not suitable for such purposes, due to the fact that they are quite heavy. For decorative design, pillows made of synthetic winterizer or holofiber are perfect.

A self-made double podium bed, not adjacent to the wall, can also become a space for creativity if, instead of traditional drawers, shelves with books are placed inside the podium. Books can be both real and fake, and if somewhere in the house there are old books with yellowed sheets lying around, then by filling the shelves with them, you can create an indescribable atmosphere of a truly vintage interior in the room.

Ordinary boards that have been lying in the shed for a long time should not be thrown away. They can also be used to create a wonderful rustic atmosphere by decorating the head of a small bed in the country with them. Boards are pre-cut to size, sanded and varnished. It is not worth painting them in a different color - it is better to take a stain in order to enhance their dark, time-affected color. A patchwork quilt and colorful pillows can be placed on the bed.

A broken bed is not yet a reason to run to the store, especially if there are bars and self-tapping screws at home. With the help of simple materials, everyone can make a double bed with their own hands, and personal preferences and wishes will serve as a guide.

The original bed will exactly match the required size, height and weight of the owner, and will also fit perfectly into the overall interior design.

Wood based

The bed frame can be made of iron or wood. And if the first option requires special skills in working with iron and hard-to-reach materials in the form of profile pipes, then every economic person will have bars along with the ability to handle a screwdriver and tighten self-tapping screws.

It will take no more than 10 days to assemble such furniture, and only safe and high-quality materials are used: self-tapping screws, plywood, MDF panel, metal corners, PVA glue, beams and dowels.

Competently and quickly assemble a strong and stable bed will help some recommendations:

  • It is better to give preference to an even beam on glued pine with a length of about 200 cm;
  • The dimensions of the future frame are recommended to be correlated with a pre-purchased mattress;
  • For boxes complementing the design, chipboard sheets should be purchased;
  • Self-tapping screws and other fasteners are bought with a margin;
  • There should be no roughness on the bases of the folds of metal corners, indicating poor quality.

Let's start assembling

Once everything you need is ready, you can start assembling the bed. The algorithm below will serve as a diagram for the manufacture of the constituent elements of the bed with your own hands.

Frame and stiffeners

First of all, a rectangular frame is made, each side of which consists of three bars fastened in height. Further, the following manipulations are necessary:

  • A beam measuring 4x5 cm is sawn into 4 parts: two 16 cm each and two 21 cm each, which are laid out on the floor along with the frame and fixed with PVA furniture glue.
  • The second layer is laid parallel to the bars, firmly fixed with self-tapping screws on both sides. Periodically, it is necessary to check the evenness of the structure with a tape measure or rope. Protruding excess glue must be immediately wiped with a cloth, preventing it from drying out.
  • For the base of the bed, slats with a thickness of at least 3 cm are taken. To increase the load capacity, a “stiffener” is made in the center, passing along the bed and having two supports.

Legs and supports

Four supports are needed and in each corner. Each leg is made from two pieces of timber 4x5 cm, while gluing their PVA seams, connecting them together with self-tapping screws and attaching them to the main frame. After that, the product is turned over and installed on the legs.

Mattress base

The bars for the support are provided for in the drawing of the bed and, depending on the suitable option, they come in various thicknesses, heights and locations. Most often they are equal to the internal length of the frame and are attached at the level of the second row.

To create an optimal orthopedic base, the rails are fixed at a distance of about 20 mm, fixing them at the edges and in the center with two self-tapping screws in each place. After the future bed is left to allow the glue to dry.

Sanding and painting

The final processing consists in grinding the entire surface, thoroughly washing the product. Before painting, a protective wood primer is applied to the perimeter of the structure, and the bed is painted with high-quality wear-resistant varnish in 3-4 layers.

Modernizing standards

One bed is good, but a children's and bunk bed is even better, especially since making it with your own hands is as easy as making a standard model.

Choosing a suitable scheme, you can experiment with the dimensions and design: make two beds, place a desk, sofa or lockers on the ground floor.

Experienced and purposeful craftsmen will also be interested in another modern and functional model - a podium bed. In this case, you will have to accurately measure all the dimensions of the room and prepare the lumber in strict accordance with the required area.

Mandatory drawers at the bottom of the bed and sidewalls hidden by panels.

If your soul and body require a new bed, then do not rush to run to the store. Making this piece of furniture with your own hands is simple and quick, and the end result will directly depend on individual wishes, taste and area.
