Strawberries in a pyramid how to build. We make a garden pyramid for strawberries with our own hands: dimensions, drawing

Currently, gardeners often use the method of growing strawberries in pyramids to effectively use the territory of the site, save labor and time, and obtain the maximum amount of tasty berries.

In addition, the pyramid for strawberries looks interesting: it is a bright and unusual decoration for a personal plot. For such a structure, it is desirable to choose a sunny place.

Design pros and cons

The bulk of multi-tiered structures, photos, which are easy to find, are kind of containers that you can buy or build. So, they have both disadvantages and positive qualities.

The benefits are:

  1. Attractive appearance. A neatly made structure with plants growing in it becomes the “highlight” of the site. And there are many ways to design them.
  2. Space saving. And in small areas I want to plant a lot of plants, here pyramidal beds will come to the rescue - with their help a minimum of free space is consumed, and it can be made in any sunny place - near the fence, kitchen walls, outbuildings or at home.
  3. Reducing labor costs. There is no need to dig up the soil here, there is nowhere left for weeds to grow.
  4. Transportability. By their design, such structures are easily moved, there are modular structures that are convenient to combine, moving, rebuilding and supplementing them.

Among the disadvantages are:

  • Possible lack of moisture. Pyramidal beds need regular watering. The soil in them quickly dries up, the plants will suffer during the drought.
  • Small amount of soil. Mostly pyramidal beds - containers are small in size. As a result, they will only grow small plants, such as strawberries, but they will also require regular top dressing.
  • Plants freeze in winter. Perennial crops growing in multi-tiered (pyramidal) beds will bring you a lot of worries, in winter, low temperatures can kill the root system.

materials

  1. Car tires.
  2. Rectangular containers and boxes.
  3. Slate structures.
  4. Old barrels.
  5. Polyethylene bags.
  6. Plastic pipes.

Such structures can be made by hand in almost any configuration, they can be placed both in the open air and in a greenhouse, occasionally craftsmen use them to grow plants on loggias and balconies.

How to do

Scheme (click to enlarge)

The manufacture of such a structure is similar to the construction of a children's sandbox, only you have to put several of them one on top of the other. This will require:

  • solid boards of the required size. They must be soaked in advance with drying oil, then treated with sandpaper and varnished;
  • fastening material for connecting boards;
  • building level;
  • a hammer;
  • soil to fill the pyramid.

First of all, level the site well and mark the area. After that, the largest part of the pyramid is made. For this, the widest boards are suitable (dimensions in width 25-30 cm).

They are connected in the form of a rectangle or square and set in place, deepening into the ground by 10-15 cm. The lower part of the pyramid is completely filled with soil, to which good compost, coarse sand and rotted humus are added. The soil must be watered and left to shrink for 30 minutes, then, if necessary, pour the earth to the edges of the boards.

They knock down the second part of the pyramid, 60 cm less in width than the top one, to leave space for planting strawberries in the first part of the garden. It is placed on the base exactly in the center. Just like installing the bottom of the beds. Everything is filled with soil and watered well.

From above, another square of boards is also installed, just as smaller as the second in size. Creating a kind of cascade. You can make as many steps of the pyramid as you need, depending on the available area.

Landing and care

When caring for strawberries in pyramidal beds, first of all, you need to take care of timely watering. You can’t overdo it with this, although in this design the discharge of excess moisture is excellent, but constantly flooded roots can still rot.

For this reason, vigilance and maximum efficiency in the fight against the aggressor are needed here. For good strawberry growth and increased yields, you need to make top dressing. Mandatory in the composition of fertilizers must be such elements as:

  1. Phosphorus (introduced when preparing the soil for the pyramids);
  2. Nitrogen (fed during the period of active growth of strawberries);
  3. Magnesium (added to the soil mixture during preparation);
  4. Potassium (added before planting, and fed during flowering plants).

In pyramid boxes, it is convenient to grow ampelous and remontant varieties of strawberries and strawberries, they continue to bloom and harvest throughout almost the entire season.

How to assemble a pyramid for strawberries with your own hands, see the tips in the following video:

In order to save space, a pyramid-bed is used for strawberries, which are sold ready-made or made by hand. The benefits of using such a design are obvious: the minimum number of weeds, the possibility of organizing a drip irrigation system, collecting more crops from a smaller area.

A multi-tiered garden bed requires care. It consists in systematic watering, shelter for the winter season and weeding. To ensure proper growth of seedlings and sufficient soil moisture, it is necessary to properly design and assemble the structure.

  • Show all

    Variety of materials

    A simple version of the strawberry pyramid, but not the cheapest, is to purchase a ready-made form in a garden supply store. The soil mixture is poured into it and seedlings are planted. Also, the bed can be made from improvised materials.

    When choosing materials, their availability in the area where the garden plot is located is taken into account. For example, pebbles are harvested on the sea coast, from which creative multi-tiered beds and flower beds are obtained.

    Car tires are considered one of the most popular materials; not only multi-tiered beds are made from them, but also unusual figures are cut out to decorate flower beds.

    Enterprising summer residents use old chests of drawers, wooden boxes, bottles into which soil is poured and strawberries are planted.

    Tiers of stone

    Beds made of cobblestones, bricks or building blocks can be of various geometric shapes. For example, in the form of thresholds, which are attached to the wall of a residential building.

    To equip a brick pyramid, a number of works are performed:

    1. 1. Erect side walls.
    2. 2. Fall asleep drainage (broken brick, expanded clay, crushed stone).
    3. 3. Lay a fertile substrate, compact it.
    4. 4. The soil is moistened and strawberry seedlings are planted.

    The stones are fixed together with a solution of cement. Each tier is laid out with a smaller diameter compared to the previous one. Fill with drainage and soil mixture. Large seedlings are placed on the lower tier, small ones on top.

    A bed of tires

    A pyramid of tires can be made in two ways. For the first, take tires of different diameters and cut out the sidewalls. Then the first tire is laid and earth is stuffed into it. A second tire with a smaller diameter is installed on top and the process is repeated depending on how many tiers are planned. The last tier involves the placement of a flower pot.

    If the tires are the same size, then "holes" are cut out in their sidewalls, into which strawberry seedlings will then be planted. The first tire is stuffed with earth and the next one is installed on top of it, and so on. It is not necessary to cut "holes" on the upper tier; you can plant strawberries around the entire perimeter of the tire.

    Pyramid of plastic pots

    For the southern region, planting strawberries in a pyramid helps protect the berry from pests and diseases.

    Standard option:

    1. 1. Prepare 3 plastic pots with a diameter of 60 cm and cut a hole with a diameter of 5 cm in the bottom.
    2. 2. On a pre-selected piece of land, the first pot is installed and a reinforcement bar is inserted through it to a depth of half a meter.
    3. 3. Put on the rest of the containers, firmly fixing them.
    4. 4. The structure is filled with soil and seedlings are planted.

    A few bushes of plants are planted in the upper pot to mask the top of the axis and give a beautiful appearance to the bed. The number of tiers may vary. The main thing is that the design is stable. For the winter, it is wrapped with a covering material. And in case of severe frost, they are dismantled and placed in the basement or greenhouse.

    When growing strawberries in this way, a good harvest is obtained in the first two seasons, then the number of berries decreases. The soil in the boxes should be watered twice a day. But this method helps to save space and get a minimum of weeds.

    From boards and boxes

    Often, boards of different lengths accumulate in the summer cottage, from which you can make a convenient pyramid-shaped bed for strawberries. To do this, prepare materials and tools:

    • boards;
    • a hammer;
    • nails or screws;
    • plane;
    • level;
    • PVC pipe or asbestos cement;
    • mixture of sand and earth.

    The boards are prepared: sanded, impregnated with drying oil, varnished. Chemical compounds cannot be used, as they are absorbed into the soil, and the quality of the berries is deteriorating.

    Table: Standard pyramid sizes for strawberries.

    The pipe acts as an irrigation system, holes are made in it 10 mm from above and 5 mm from below.

It is difficult to arrange compact plantings if there is not enough space in the garden. This is especially true for such an exquisite culture as strawberries. Many experienced gardeners invent different ways - pipes, frames, pyramids. As it turns out, this is not such a complicated matter - it would be enough imagination.

What is a pyramid for strawberries

This is a wooden structure built from boards filled with soil.

This design looks very attractive, and it is not difficult to make it.

Cultivation is carried out in a vertical way - so that the roots are directed downwards, as if planted in an ordinary garden bed, but raised above the ground.

The design is quite simple, it can be built with your own hands, involving improvised means.. The principle of the pyramid is that the lower layers of plantings are not obscured by the upper layers from the access of sunlight and just light. The beds themselves are arranged in the form of steps- seedlings are located in several tiers, while the tiers look like an ordinary planted horizontal bed.

Advantages

Even this small design can accommodate several dozen strawberry roots.

The main advantage of the pyramid is that it is possible to save space in the garden, in addition, to plant a large number of seedlings in a relatively small area. Another plus is a beautiful aesthetic appearance - it looks like an exotic flower bed.

Scheme of cutting boards.

Summarizing the above, we can highlight the following:

Due to the fact that the plants are on a hill and practically do not come into contact with the soil, the root system is much less susceptible to decay. This method of cultivation makes it possible to avoid infection with gray mold, infection with slugs, cabbage.

Strawberry resistance to fungi when planted in a pyramid

But also the culture acquires conditional immunity to infection and the spread of fungal diseases.

Concerning simplifies prevention- the number of preventive sprayings or therapeutic treatments is reduced. Among other things, plant care is simplified - it is convenient to cut off the first flower stalks, stepchildren.

And the pyramid can also be made collapsible and put away for the winter in a barn.

Reviews of gardeners

  • It is easy to loosen the soil, remove possible weeds, apply mineral or organic fertilizers.
  • Easier garden watering- several tiers are watered at once.
  • Reduced fruit ripening time , easier harvesting You don't have to constantly bend over.
  • Many gardeners use pyramid beds as landscape design element- looks great both during the flowering period and during the fruiting period.
  • The structure can be decorated with climbing plants - bindweed, wild grapes.

The choice of material and the mechanism for constructing the pyramid

When deciding to build a pyramidal structure for strawberries, one should take into account the possibilities - the availability of the necessary material, skills and imagination.

This structure can be built from various raw materials - wood, metal, polyethylene, plastic, but, in addition to the named materials, the following means can be used:

  • unnecessary tires;
  • a set of old pipes of different lengths and diameters;
  • bags for construction needs;
  • plastic bottles;
  • empty containers - barrels or boxes;
  • vases for flowers.

From these materials, you can create not just a solid pyramid - depict a beautiful decor element on the site. It is desirable for long-term service to use raw materials that can stand firmly for several years - from one to four years.

In most cases, gardeners choose wood- boards or long bars. A structure made of wood is usually built with three or four corners, while several steps are erected - tiers.

It is more difficult to make a high pyramid, since it is necessary to calculate the sufficient rigidity of the structure.

Location identification

If there is a place for a garden on the plot, then there should be no problems with choosing a place.

Otherwise, you will have to choose a place right in the yard, and in this situation it is worth showing imagination, installing a vertical garden bed in the form of a decorative element of landscape design. The same decision should be made if you want to install the building in an apartment environment - you have to figure out how to arrange the frame in the form of a beautiful flower stand.

Pyramid with strawberries in the apartment

If the installation is carried out in an apartment, the best place for this would be a balcony - it is desirable that it be insulated and tightly closed for the winter.

For a balcony, it is better to come up with something compact, such as a small rack based on pots.

If the frame is small, it can be equipped on the windowsill. At the same time, it is important that the location of the vertical flower bed is on the south or south-west side. As a last resort, should be provided with maximum access to light- it is possible to equip artificial lighting with a special lamp.

When to plant seedlings

In some cases, you can plant until mid-September, but in these circumstances it is necessary to plant in such a place that do not expose new gardens to the first frosts- in the apartment, on the closed balcony.

Preparatory work and drawings

In order to get a high-quality and durable pyramid, it is worth calculating the parameters using the drawings.

The scheme of the pyramid from the boards.

  1. Next, you need to prepare wooden boards, nails for joints - a size of 20 to 50 millimeters.
  2. Take a hammer, planer, spirit level.
  3. But you will also need pipes made of asbestos cement or PVC, in which there are holes with a diameter of ten millimeters.
  4. To fill the cavities of the flower bed, you will need a soil mixture - black soil, sand, peat, humus.
  5. It is desirable to treat all surfaces with drying oil.
  6. It is better to avoid treatment with chemical agents due to the fact that these agents will affect the quality and size of the fruit, the level of development and adaptation of seedlings.

Selection of connecting grooves

Construction mechanism

First you need to determine the size of the pyramid.

Approximate measurements should be:

  • Rabitz- two hundred and forty by two hundred and forty centimeters,
  • first level- two hundred and twenty by two hundred and twenty, by twenty-five centimeters,
  • second level is one hundred and seventy by one hundred and seventy, by twenty-five centimeters.
  • Third floor is 120 by 120 by 25 centimeters, the fourth tier is seventy by seventy, by twenty-five centimeters.
  • The highest tier- twenty by twenty, twenty-five centimeters.

The base is a board about forty millimeters thick. When all the blanks are ready - connect with nails and glue.

You can use screws and metal corners for greater strength. The lower tier is filled with compost with a small gap of 6 cm for subsequent top dressing. Next, the soil is compacted. In a similar way, all floors of the pyramid are installed. Tiers can be from three to nine.

We fall asleep fertile soil and plant strawberries.

Landing features

At each level of the structure, a specific landing method is applied.

  1. They start from the lowest floor - seven seedlings on each side.
  2. The next level is five bushes on each side.
  3. The third and fourth row - three bushes on each side, the upper level - two seedlings at the base of the pipe.

Planting care consists in regular watering of seedlings, but one cannot build on any conditional scheme.

Watering is carried out as needed. Top dressing is carried out by means of liquid nutrient mixtures. Among other things, it is worth taking care of protecting the plantings from low temperatures and providing a sufficient amount of lighting .

We have known for a long time. So, it's time to master the vertical ridges. And the most common and convenient option for vertical cultivation is strawberry pyramids. Growing strawberries in pyramids is very popular all over the world because, first of all, it is beautiful and not as difficult as it seems.

You can build a strawberry pyramid with your own hands from improvised materials. We will talk today about what kind of pyramids are for strawberries and how to build such beauty on your site.

Growing strawberries in pyramids (multi-tiered or cascading beds) is beneficial for owners of small summer cottages, where there is always not enough space for plantings. And here is a high structure with several floors, and strawberries grow on each - a dream!

Advanced gardeners say that strawberries are warmer in the pyramids, a special microclimate is created there, and the tiered design of the ridges protects against an excess of moisture.

On longline beds, it is easier to carry out all the manipulations for processing bushes: pruning, removing mustaches, mulching, and even picking the berries themselves.

Pyramids, if necessary, are easily covered for the winter with a film.

The pyramidal design can be sprayed from pests faster and better than the usual one, because the treatment captures several tiers at once.

Finally, a pyramid-shaped bed strewn with ripe berries is a chic element of the landscape design of our summer cottage. Still, the best decor option is the one that pleases the eye and brings the harvest.

What are the pyramids for strawberries

Pyramids for strawberries can be conditionally divided into two types: a pyramid in the form of a multi-tiered bed of boxes and a pyramid-shelf. The classification does not end there, in the matter of building strawberry "high-rise buildings" the fantasy of gardeners knows no bounds. See:

How to Build a Strawberry Pyramid: A Step by Step Guide

One of the variants of the strawberry pyramid is a multi-tiered bed of boxes. To build such a bed, we need:

  • Rabitz;
  • boards, flat slate or other material for making boxes;
  • wood protection impregnation;
  • screws or nails, drills;
  • jigsaw, screwdriver or hammer, planer and level; roulette
  • sewer PVC pipe (diameter 100 millimeters);
  • earth, sand, peat, manure, compost.

Standard pyramid sizes for strawberries:
240x240 cm - chain-link mesh;
220x220x25 cm - the first box;
170x170x25 cm - the second box;
120x120x23 cm - the third box;
70x70x25 cm - the fourth box;
20x20x25 cm - the last tier.

Step 1. Using a jigsaw, boards are cut to the desired size. Boxes are made from them.

It is desirable to process the uppermost edge of the boards with a planer and round the corners so that the mustache and strawberry stalks do not scratch or cut with sharp edges. To lengthen the service life of the pyramid, the tree is impregnated with a protective compound.

Step 2 Holes are made in the pipe with which watering will be carried out: in the upper part with a diameter of 10 millimeters, in the lower part - 5 millimeters. The bottom of the pipe is plugged as tightly as possible so that moisture does not leave.

Step 3 In the place chosen for the garden, a chain-link mesh is spread as the base of the future pyramid.

Step 4 The largest box is installed on the grid and covered with soil (ground mixed with sand or peat).

Step 5 A pipe with holes is installed in the center of the box with the closed end down. It is advisable to overlay the pipe with a mixture of compost and manure - fill it from the outside and compact it. This, roughly speaking, manure heap will serve as additional nutrition and a source of heat for the entire garden.

Step 6 The next box is installed on top and is also filled with soil.

Step 7 All subsequent tiers are installed in the same way.

The pyramid for strawberries is ready. It remains to wait a bit until the soil settles, and young bushes can be planted. In the first tier, seven bushes are usually planted along each side, in the second - five, in the third - three, and in the fourth - two, and only two bushes are planted in the uppermost tier at the very pipe. In total, 70 strawberry plants are placed on a pyramidal bed. The agricultural technique of growing strawberries in pyramids is different in that all watering and fertilizing are carried out through a dug-in pipe.

Whatnot for strawberries: how to build your own hands

The second option for a vertical strawberry garden is a bookcase. To make a shelf you will need:

  • 11 boards measuring 200x50x2.4 mm;
  • a bar measuring 50x50x400 millimeters;
  • drill, screwdriver;
  • jigsaw or hacksaw;
  • tape measure, square, protractor;
  • self-tapping screws, screws;
  • fertile soil.

Step 1. Four two-meter boards are taken and the corners are marked: at one end of the board - 30 °, at the other - 60 °. With a jigsaw or a hacksaw, we make cuts as marked, respectively, at one end of the board at sixty degrees, and at the other at thirty. Cuts are made on one side of the board so that the two-meter height is preserved. These will be vertical faces - the base of the pyramid.

Step 2 To fasten the side faces you will need a bar. Two boards are placed with cuts at 60 ° to each other, a bar is inserted between them and twisted with screws. Then they are placed vertically, the remaining faces are leaned with angles of 60 ° and fixed with self-tapping screws.

Step 3 On each of the four vertical faces, starting from the base, six marks are made every 285 millimeters. Then measure the distance between all four faces in the area of each mark at the same level. These distances are added and divided by four. So calculate the length of the horizontal edges-shelves for each level.

Step 4 Saw the boards according to the dimensions obtained: four pieces of each size. On the sides of future shelves, corners of 30 ° are cut. The corners are again cut off on one side of the board so that its length does not decrease. As a result, for each level of the whatnot, four horizontal shelves should be obtained.

Step 5 Fastened vertical supports and horizontal shelves are transferred to the place of the intended beds. There, the pyramid is finally mounted, fixing each horizontal shelf with three screws where the marks were placed in the third stage.

Step 6 Using a level, set the finished pyramid so that the vertical supports are level and the horizontal shelves are at the same level.

Step 7 Fill the pyramid-shelf with soil, starting from the lower shelves. Well tamp the soil. And then young strawberry bushes are planted.

As you can see, growing strawberries in the pyramids is not for lazy people - at the initial stage, some effort is required. But there is nothing supernatural in the construction of strawberry pyramids, this task is within the power of almost everyone.

Today, professional farmers and amateur gardeners are increasingly using vertical beds on their farms to grow strawberries. This type of planting of this crop allows more efficient use of the area, saves time and effort in the growing process and significantly increases the yield. And the pyramid for strawberries is an original bright decoration of the entire summer cottage.

The indisputable advantage of the vertical method of growing strawberries is space saving and high yield. Planting plants in this way, the bushes are on top of each other and do not occupy vast areas. The yield of strawberries in such structures can exceed the usual 5 times. In order for a strawberry bush to grow well and bear fruit, it needs to provide a free height of about 30 cm. With this method of cultivation, care in general is greatly simplified: removal of mustaches, watering, feeding, harvesting.

Modern vertical beds can be made in a variety of configurations: pyramids, metal or wood shelves, ovals, tire circles, pipes, plastic bottles, flower pots and much more. They can be placed both in a greenhouse and in the open air, and some craftsmen adapt such structures even on the balconies of apartment buildings.

In do-it-yourself strawberry pyramids, it is especially profitable and convenient to grow continuously fruiting varieties (remontant), since their flowering and ripening of berries occurs over a long period of time.

How to build vertical tiers

The most popular among gardeners is the pyramid. Usually it is made three- or quadrangular. The design can be done with your own hands is quite simple. For its manufacture, wood, metal or dense plastic is used. Wood is the most convenient, but everyone goes beyond their capabilities and experience with this or that material.

First of all, you need to consider which design will be the most suitable for you; make the necessary drawings; determine the exact dimensions; prepare materials for construction. For the base, it is best to take a bar about 40 mm thick. All wooden elements should be treated with an antiseptic or varnished. This will help protect the wood from moisture, fungi, pests, etc.

The blanks are fastened together with nails and glue, and for greater strength, you can use metal corners / strips and screws. This will significantly improve the strength of each tier separately, and of the entire structure as a whole. The first (fundamental) tier must be filled with previously prepared fertile soil, leaving 4-6 cm free on top so that it is possible to feed and water the plants.

Then the soil should be lightly tamped and put the next tier. The procedure is repeated until the completion of the designed structure. Please note that each floor should be 30-35 cm smaller than the previous one. The pyramid can consist of 3-9 tiers and bring up to 95 kg of strawberries per season. After completing the assembly of the structure, it can be painted or decorated in an original way so that it harmoniously fits into the landscape.

Setting up drip irrigation

When growing any crop, it is extremely important to ensure timely proper watering, which guarantees a good harvest. Today, the most popular method of irrigating pyramids for strawberries is drip - water goes directly to the root, and the soil does not become waterlogged.

A perforated hose is required to ensure watering the strawberry pyramid. It is not necessary to buy it, it is quite possible to do it yourself, piercing small holes in an ordinary hose at a distance of about 20 cm with an awl or a gypsy needle. The hose prepared in this way must be laid with a snake between the beds and plugged one end. The second is to connect to a container from which life-giving moisture will flow.

Doing drip irrigation with your own hands, you should also consider disassembling the system for wintering in order to use ready-made materials again next season.

  1. a massive do-it-yourself strawberry pyramid should be collected at the place planned for it. Otherwise, you may encounter a transportation problem;
  2. to get a good harvest of strawberries, you need to fill the tiers of the pyramid with high-quality soil. For strawberries, a composition of a mixture of peat, perlite, vermiculite and coconut fiber is ideal. Also, do not forget about regular top dressing;
  3. think carefully about how to protect plants from frost. It is better to think about this issue before starting the construction of the pyramid, so as not to ruin all your work later.

Vertical beds have many advantages over traditional strawberry growing methods. Strawberry pyramids bring not only a magnificent harvest, but also serve as an original decoration for the entire site.
