How to make pots out of concrete. How to make flower pots from cement yourself? Getting Started

You don't need to be seven spans in the forehead to see how relevant it is in modern architecture and design. Today, its place is far from clearly localized in the usual areas where we have long become accustomed to it: in structural elements and floor screeds, for example. A material that was previously denied its own appeal is now being rediscovered precisely for its decorative qualities.

Now more and more often you can see how concrete is used in the most non-trivial situations. He stepped over from the streets to public and residential premises quite a long time ago, proving his versatility. Today, even furniture is made of concrete.

The combination of concrete with soft and natural materials, contrary to some habit of “marrying” it with glass and metal, today sets a new tactile and visual dimension to design.

In order to keep up with the times, and at the same time to expand our ideas about the outside world, let's think about a simple task, for example: how to make a planter out of concrete?

Decide on the form

The first step is to decide on the form. There can be many options - this is also a kind of creativity. recommend being guided by common sense and a vision of the whole: how your planter will look not only with specific plants, but also in an ensemble.

One way or another, you will have to follow some universal rules for casting a product.

The form for making flowerpots is two elements identical in shape (which one you just have to choose from the very beginning), but different in size. This is done in such a way that the gap between both elements, when the smaller one is placed in the larger one, is about five centimeters. This value corresponds to the wall thickness of the future pots.

It must be remembered that the larger the size of the future product, the thicker its walls should be. However, the difference is not so drastic. So, a product over 60 centimeters should have walls of the order of 7.5 centimeters.

Form can be created from almost anything. Glass, plastic, stainless steel and even cardboard are great for this. A great option is polystyrene foam, a plastic, pliable and lightweight material.

Concrete planters

Cache-pot is a wonderful occasion for creativity. One of those "optional" elements of interior or garden design, for which we rarely decide on a long "hunt" in flea markets or specialty stores. However, it is always pleasant to perform such objects with one's own hands.

Concrete planters are another new trend. The decor element, traditionally associated with a certain model of comfort, continuity, here acquires completely different features: openness, unwillingness to hide behind complexes. Such a “new thing” will always come in handy in a modern interior, but today decorative elements made of concrete are more and more common in traditional rooms, which also changes our understanding of tradition.

How to make an Author's planter out of concrete?

The procedure for casting concrete products is not too laborious, but nevertheless requires some technical knowledge. You need to understand that not observing elementary technological conditions can affect the quality of the product, and in the worst case, completely reduce all labor to nothing.

Preparing the mold

The mold - what we did a step earlier - before the concrete is poured into it, must be properly prepared. Otherwise, there is a high probability that the finished planter cannot be removed from the mold itself.

The inner surface of the mold, both its parts, must be treated with mineral oil or a special lubricant. This will create the necessary intermediate layer, so that later you can easily and without destroying the shape, you can remove the finished product.

Mixing concrete

First of all, you need to take some precautions: for example, when working with concrete, it will not be out of place to use rubber gloves to protect your hands.

It is worth mixing concrete in a sufficiently capacious container, for example, in an old bathroom or tank. Concrete of high grades, not subject to cracking, should be preferred.

Based on the manufacturer's recommendations, calculate the required amount of dry matter for the solution, pour it into a container and then, gradually and stirring the solution, pour in the required amount of water. The finished solution should resemble the consistency of the dough for the cake.

At this stage, various decorative additives can be introduced into the solution: glass, pebbles, shells, beads or other materials, as well as various dyes. However, it is necessary to ensure that all these manipulations do not radically change the consistency of the solution.

Pour the mixture

Pour the concrete mixture evenly into the bottom of the outer part of the mold - this will be the base of the planter. If you plan to make drainage holes, they can be formed at this stage, or left to harden for at least two days, the finished product, drilled after.

Level and smooth the concrete with a trowel. Insert the inside of the mold and press until you reach the desired thickness of the base. The base and walls of the planter must be of the same thickness. However, sometimes a thicker base than the walls is allowed, but not vice versa.

Then the concrete solution fills the distance between the parts of the form. Systematically tamp the concrete layer with a trowel and pour the mortar along the walls of the mold - this will help maintain a smooth surface of the walls of the product and avoid the formation of air bubbles.

After filling the form to the top, level and smooth the protruding surface.

Let's freeze

After pouring, the form, together with the contents, is wrapped in plastic wrap and left in this form for approximately 36 hours. After this time, the concrete is tested with a knife or a screwdriver: if they leave marks on the surface, the product should be dried for some more time.

Extracting the work

After drying, making sure that the concrete is sufficiently hard, the product is removed from the mold. First, slowly remove the inner part. In the event that glass was used for the mold that was not pre-coated with grease or mineral oil, such a mold will have to be broken. The cardboard form may leave marks on the pots, which will later need to be scraped off.

Then the cache-pot is removed from the outer part of the mold. Outside, the surface of the product is smoothed with a coarse brush or abrasive paper. Over the next week, the pots will still not be used - the concrete must dry completely and acquire all its consumer qualities.

After drying for at least two days, you can drill drainage holes in the base of the planter.

Finally, rub the pot with a damp sponge or cloth to remove dust and reveal its true color and surface.

A finished concrete planter can become a decoration of the garden, as well as a spacious and even a hall. Don't be afraid to experiment with concrete: even if it's a little laborious and time-consuming, the result of such experiments can be a stylish and fresh addition to traditional decor elements.

Homemade flower pots made of concrete can be made by hand. Such products look quite at home, although the name of the material sounds somewhat heavy. For the manufacture of such pots, you do not need any special knowledge and skills, everything is within the framework of ordinary common sense.

For a summer residence or a suburban area, concrete containers can be quite voluminous. But such people are unlikely to find a place in the house. Concrete flowerpots can be made in small sizes for growing succulents on the windowsill. Close to topic.

As a form, round plastic containers are suitable, which are used for packaging products. Each form consists of two containers, one should be smaller and go inside a large one so that there are gaps of about 15-20 mm between the walls. .

The cement used is moisture-resistant, quick-hardening. For kneading, you will need a bath, a narrow spatula and measuring plastic cups for bottling.
To get a perfectly smooth surface, cement is mixed with water in a ratio of 4/1, or 5/1. These sandless mortars are sometimes made to plug cracks from which water oozes.
An ordinary cement mortar is prepared from sand and cement, in a ratio of 2/1 or 3/1, diluted with water until a sour cream consistency is obtained. But the standard mixture breaks down faster from the action of moisture and does not have such a smooth surface.

A mixture of cement and water must be quickly mixed and poured to half the height of a large plastic container. Then lower a smaller container into the center and press down, sinking into the solution. Then, if necessary, add the solution between the walls of the container.
To prevent the inner packaging from popping up, it must be loaded with something. Immediately you need to align the edges of the pot with the level of the edge of the plastic container.

When the solution is completely set, and this will take at least a day, we remove the plastic containers, and slightly clean the sharp edges with an emery cloth.

In another version of the manufacture of planters, a more stylish trapezoidal shape is chosen. Here, as a volume for pouring, a plastic or metal rectangular container with walls beveled inward is used.

To obtain the internal volume, a small plastic jar is installed at the bottom of the container. Please note that the inner packaging must necessarily be lower in height than the large form. Otherwise, it will not work to make the bottom of the pot.

We turn the plastic container upside down and place it in the center of a large container. There is one subtlety here, the inner shape must be glued to the bottom of a large container. This can be done using plasticine or polymer clay (TAC). Other options are also possible, for example, press the inner container from above pointwise, with some kind of sharp object. And when the solution grabs to remove the load.

Since the walls of the pot are thick enough, you can use ordinary cement mortar for mixing, or even a ready-made contact plaster mixture. To make it easier to get the finished casting, it is better to lubricate the walls of the container with petroleum jelly.

Put the solution into the mold so that it covers the bottom of the inner cup by 10 mm. . After pouring, lightly tap the walls to release air bubbles. Just be very careful so that the inner shape does not peel off and float.

Wait for the solution to fully set, this is 3 days, and then carefully remove the pots from the large container. The inner packaging can be pulled out without much ceremony with the plastic, but so as not to damage the edges of the flower pot.
Sharp ribs must be passed with fine emery cloth so that they are slightly rounded.

Designing a garden plot is an important step that allows you to turn inconspicuous flowers and plants into a whole work of art. It is not difficult to make flower pots out of cement with your own hands - a master class will allow you to master the technique of making various options. These are a kind of flowerpots for growing flowers. They make the vegetation more vivid and unusual, add sophistication and style to the overall design.

Cement garden planters

If you want to make a cement planter with your own hands for the garden, then you should first consider the important rules and features of the manufacturing process. It is quite simple, but still there are some principles that must be observed.

To make a large planter or flowerpot, you will need to prepare the following components:

  • a form of plastic base, the size of the diameter should be 53 cm, and the height should be 23 cm;
  • the solution will require white cement, perlite (agroperlite), high-moor peat;
  • oilcloth or cellophane, you need to take a bag or cut that will cover the entire surface of the plastic container;
  • metal wire frame or reinforcing structure;
  • cleaning brush.

To make a cement pot with your own hands, you should consider a master class, which is carried out in several stages:

  1. First you need to make a solution. It will require 2 parts of white cement, one part of perlite (agroperlite) and two parts of high-moor peat. For measurements, it is better to use a bucket with a volume of one and a half liters.
  2. Next, the dry components are poured with water and stirred until a homogeneous consistency with a thick structure is formed.
  3. We line the bottom and walls of a plastic flower pot with cellophane or film. It should completely cover the container to the very top.
  4. When spreading cellophane, it is important to straighten it, it must be even, otherwise incomprehensible folds and bumps will remain on the finished product.
  5. First of all, we spread the solution on the bottom of the pot, level it well. The layer thickness should be 4 cm, you can control it with a match or a toothpick.
  6. To make the structure strong, it is required to install a metal wire frame or a reinforcing structure.
  7. Since the product should turn out to be large, the solution will need to be kneaded fractionally, in parts. In general, it will take about 4-5 batches.
  8. Be sure to consider a drainage hole. To make it, you need to put a cork on the bottom, which is pre-wrapped in a film.
  9. After the entire surface of the container is lined with cement, everything is covered with a film and left to stand for about 10 days. During this period, the cement mixture will harden and gain strength.
  10. If the surface dries out, then it needs to be slightly moistened.
  11. After about 8 days, it will be necessary to check the readiness. To do this, the surface of the cement needs to be tapped a little, if the sound is not deaf, then the pots are removed from the container along with the film;
  12. Next, the surface of the product is cleaned with a metal brush.

If you want to make a colored planter, then you will need to purchase special dyes. To do this, each part of the cement is painted in a certain color and laid out in parts.

How to make a planter out of cement and fabric

To decorate the site, you can use a variety of elements - pots, flowerpots, planters. They can be made with your own hands, especially home-made products are bright and original. For this reason, it is imperative to know how to make planters from cement and fabric. This will allow you to perform a real work of art from improvised materials.

To make a planter out of fabric and cement with your own hands, you will need to prepare the following tools and materials:

  1. The basis for the preparation of the solution. It is better to use a budget option - Portland cement brand M400.
  2. blank. As it can be used tulle, terry towel, burlap. It is advisable to use embossed fabric, it will allow you to make a brighter and more unusual planter.
  3. Any paint for concrete surfaces. It can be used as an acrylic, water-epoxy, polymer, vinyl, acrylic-silicone or lime coloring mixture.
  4. Paint brushes.
  5. Fine structure polyethylene packaging film. A simple stretch film can be used as this component.
  6. The form in which the pots will be made from a rag and cement with your own hands. A conical bucket or any other container that has a conical and pyramidal shape is perfect for this.
  7. The container in which the cement will be kneaded.
  8. To stir the solution, you can use an electric drill with a mixer nozzle.

The process of making flower pots from cement with your own hands is not particularly difficult, a detailed master class will help with this. It consists of several stages:

  1. Preliminary form for planters, it is recommended to completely cover with a film. This is required for the convenience and possibility of removing the finished cement product.
  2. A cement mortar is made in the container. First of all, water is poured into it, cement is poured into it. Using a drill with a mixer nozzle, the solution is kneaded.
  3. The finished solution should not turn out too thick, in consistency it should resemble something between milk and sour cream.
  4. The fabric is dipped into the solution, it must be completely immersed in the cement base.
  5. It is better to leave the fabric in cement for a while so that it is well saturated.
  6. Next, the workpiece is removed from the solution and thrown onto the bucket. The edges should be straightened, you can create folds to make the pots more vivid and original.
  7. After about 3 days, the pots can be removed from the container.
  8. The surface of the product is painted with any paint that is intended for concrete.

Cache-pot for flowers in the form of a shoe

Its useful to note! On the site, a planter in the form of a shoe will look beautiful and unusual. It will give the vegetation sophistication and grace, and the garden will be transformed beyond recognition. Of course, manufacturing will require time and effort, but the result is worth it.

To make a planter in the form of a shoe, it is worth preparing the required elements and materials:

  • plastic cans;
  • threads with a thick structure;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • wide adhesive tape or tape;
  • PVA glue;
  • several packs of newspapers;
  • the basis for the solution is cement and sand;
  • water;
  • egg trays.

If you do not know how to make a cement planter shoe, then the master class can provide a quick and easy mastering of the manufacturing technique. Moreover, on the Internet you can find a detailed video describing the process.

So, the whole work consists of several stages:

  • for work, you will need two canisters for 10 liters and one for 1 liter;
  • along the lines that are drawn on the canister, we cut it off, and leave one whole;
  • we install another canister on the side and fix it with self-tapping screws, and then wrap it with tape;
  • further from the bottom of the structure it is required to make several holes, this is necessary to ensure drainage;
  • with the help of small pieces of newspapers, PVA glue and papier-mâché technique, we give the product the shape of a shoe;
  • then a solution is made, it is made from 1 part of the mixture, 3 parts of sand and water, stir well;
  • after the form from the newspapers is ready, we screw self-tapping screws along its entire lower surface from two sides and tighten it with threads, this will ensure the best stability of the cement mortar on the surface of the form;
  • the form can be pre-treated with a primer;
  • then we apply cement on all surfaces and level well, leave the product to dry completely;
  • after the shoe dries and becomes durable, it must be sanded;
  • at the end we cover with a special paint for concrete.

The finished planter in the form of a shoe can be used as a decoration for the garden plot. It will give it brightness and positive notes. The vegetation in it will look stylish, elegant.

Making a planter out of cement and rags is a fun activity that will entice many. Everyone can make this product, even those who have never made structures of this type before. The main thing is to carefully study the instructions and the basic rules of manufacture.

Step-by-step production of planters from fabric and cement

Concrete is a material that is quite easy to work with. You can create any shapes and figures. And even if you have never worked with concrete, the ideas presented in our article can be tried by a beginner. We are talking about different cultures of cement. We have prepared several master classes for you: how to make a concrete fountain, an unusual flower pot, cement benches, a bird bath, a garden path, and not only photo instructions, but also videos to help!

Round concrete fountain

If you do not like the monotony of gray concrete, the finished product can be painted in any color. In general, all the ideas presented here can be changed at your discretion, it all depends on what form you choose to create your product.

Unusual flower pot made of concrete with your own hands - photo instruction

At first glance, it does not seem at all that this flower pot is so easy to make. The idea is especially suitable for those who have never dealt with concrete and would like to start with something simple. One has only to remember that when working with cement, it is imperative to wear gloves to avoid cement poisoning.

Necessary materials

You will need:

  • cement
  • wooden stick or other object for stirring the cement
  • two buckets (the size depends on the desired size of the future flower pot)
  • old towel
  • a sheet of dense polyethylene as a substrate

Step 1 - Stir the Concrete

To create such a flower pot, as in the picture, a 19-liter bucket was used. The bucket is half filled with cement, then water is added in the required amount. To make a pot, the consistency should be more watery than is commonly used in concrete making, but still not too runny. The mixture should, on the one hand, soak the towel well enough, on the other hand, remain on the towel, and not drain down.

Step 2 - prepare the canvas

Now the main stage. Take the second bucket, turn it over. Throw an old towel on top, check if it is long enough for a bucket. Excess fabric can simply be cut off. Preparing the towel is an important step in creating a flower pot, because the beauty of the final product will depend on the location of the fabric. Remove the towel from the bucket, soak it completely with concrete. Place the towel back on the bucket and shape it to your liking.

Step 3 - form a flower pot

If suddenly you notice places uncovered with concrete, while the cement is still damp, you have the opportunity to fix it. Before putting the product to dry, check again the quality of the coating and how aesthetically the resulting shape of the future looks. After that, let the product dry for a day or two. When the cement is dry, take out the bucket, fill the pot with earth, and plant any flowers. Ready!

Do-it-yourself concrete bird bath

Do you like birdsong? Attract little guests to your garden with a refreshing bath! The product is made quite simply and quickly.

Necessary materials

You will need:

  • 2 bags of cement
  • bowl for stirring
  • beaker
  • cement trowel
  • pouring molds (old bowls and bucket)
  • mold lubricant
  • piece of linen

Step 1 - prepare the cement

Recommendation: do not mix two bags of cement at once. It is much more convenient to prepare only half a bag at a time. So, pour half a bag of dry cement into a bowl (large enough so that the mixture does not overflow when stirred), mix with water. Use a measuring cup to know how much water was needed for the first batch of concrete: the rest of the batches should have the same consistency. When stirring, try to avoid the appearance of air bubbles.

Step 2 - making the base

To make the base of the bird bath, you will need a bag of cement. A bucket, wider at the top than at the bottom, works well as a mold for the base. Thus, the design will be more stable. Fill the bucket with the prepared cement mixture and allow it to dry.

Step 3 - making a bath

Take two bowls of different sizes. Pour the cement mixture into a larger bowl, form a depression in it with your hands (don't forget about gloves!) Press the smaller bowl into the cavity, removing excess mixture. Weight the small bowl with stones, otherwise the cement may “slide” down during drying and push the bowl out.

Step 4 - decorating and drying the cement

While the cement is still wet, it can be decorated. For example, by adding glass or pebbles around the edges. A few hours after the start of drying, the small bowl can be removed, but the entire bath will need at least a day to dry well. To prevent cracking, cover the tub with a damp linen cloth. When the bath is dry, put it on the base, fill it with water and enjoy the view of the bathing birds.

DIY concrete bench

You can make molds for the manufacture of any concrete products yourself. For example, for such a bench, you can build a box, the dimensions of which you determine yourself. Such a pretty bench will be a place to relax on a hot summer day.

How to make inscriptions and drawings on concrete

When the cement dries a little, it becomes easy to make inscriptions or even whole drawings on it. So, a welcome inscription will delight your guests, and flowers painted on the bench will perfectly complement the vegetation in the garden. Drawings and the whole product, again, can be painted after drying.

DIY flower box

The principle of manufacturing such a box, for sure, is already clear: two forms of different sizes are taken, the gap is filled with cement. Such a flower box will perfectly complement the garden or separate a certain area in the garden. Plant a variety of flowers and plants in the box to add texture and color to the concrete surface.

Concrete garden path

A garden path can become a work of art, all you need is an appropriate form for making concrete circles. However, the shape of concrete elements can be any. Gravel scattered around them will enliven the landscape.

Do-it-yourself fountain in the country

Such a fountain looks rather complicated, but it is quite possible to make it yourself. Follow the directions in the video. Despite the fact that the explanations in the video are in English, it is not necessary to be a polyglot: everything is clear and without words.

Each owner of a personal plot strives to improve it, and if there is no possibility and space for arranging a pond, an alpine hill, then there will certainly be a place for flower pots. Concrete containers will play the role of small architectural forms, their use in the landscape will create aesthetic visual accents and “dilute” the monotony of green spaces.

Cache-pots are the most durable, wear-resistant products, they are not afraid of frost, precipitation, or sunlight. In terms of durability, they are not inferior to metal options: if they are able to corrode, heat up, wrinkle from falling and impact, then this is not typical of concrete bowls.

What types are there?

Planters can be used in the interior of the room, both miniature (under low flowers) and large (under palm trees, indoor trees).

Pots are classified into those that:

  • suitable for street decor;
  • decorate and function in the rooms.

Divided by size:

  • small;
  • medium;
  • large and very large.

Depending on the shape, concrete pots are:

  • simple: rectangular, square, round, triangular, oval, like a traditional vase;
  • complex: curly (for example, in the form of a goblet, cup, boot, bird, person, animal), multifaceted (in the form of a pyramid, prism, octahedron, star).

According to the method of placement, they are divided into:

  • hanging - reinforced with a chain or rope and hanging;
  • floor / ground - located on a horizontal surface, this includes pots that are placed on a windowsill, table;
  • wall-mounted - implying fixation to vertical structures both inside the building and on the facade.

As for the decor, here, as in the case of the shape of the vessel, there are no limits to fantasy. Restrained, but tasteful look pots with the texture of stone and concrete. Flowerpots decorated with fragments of broken plates, anthracite, shells, river / sea pebbles look no less attractive. Products painted in one or more colors will attract more attention, and if they have intricate patterns and drawings, they will not take their eyes off at all.

The next point that plays a significant role is the production of planters. Factory flowerpots are good because they are completely ready for use. They do not need to be done, wasting time and effort. The disadvantages are: the price (large, curly pots are especially expensive) and not always the availability of what the consumer has planned and wants to buy (despite the wide range, manufacturers mainly focus on those variations of products that are in the highest demand).

Homemade planters made of concrete mix are characterized by a laborious process, but otherwise they outperform industrial ones. For example, you can make almost any kind of vessel yourself, decorate it the way you want. For the price of a handmade creation will come out cheaper.

How to make an elegant pot on your own?

If you do not want or are afraid to mix cement with components incorrectly, you can use ready-made artistic concrete as an alternative. The surface of the product from such a material will turn out to be smoother, interesting, and of different textures. This is achievable due to the fact that the decorative composition, in addition to cement and sand, contains small fragments of minerals and polymer additives. Some varieties contain dyes. But even if they are not there, it is allowed to independently introduce organic or aniline.

When making a planter not from a purchased, but a home-made concrete mix, it is recommended to carefully study all the nuances. For clarity, it is better to watch the video on YouTube.

It is worth acquiring ingredients in advance: cement, crushed stone or gravel, sand. The ratio of components should be 2:3:3. The aggregate fraction size does not exceed 3-4 mm. Initially, portland cement and sand are mixed, then crushed stone / gravel is connected to them. Having reached uniformity after combining the ingredients, a slide is collected from the mass, in the middle of which a hole is made. Water will have to be poured into it, and in limited portions, in order to control the breeding process. At the end, the cement mixture should not turn out to be liquid: it is brought to the state of wet clay.

Now, for the manufacture of planters, you need to find 2 containers of equal height, but different in volume. What it will be - basins, buckets, jars or boxes, depends on the shape you are striving for. By inserting one vessel into another, a free space should form between them. It will be the thickness of an indoor or outdoor flowerpot.

After making sure that everything suits the planter in the future, it will be necessary to solve the problem of unhindered removal of the concrete base from the workpiece. To this end, before pouring the solution into the gap between the containers, they must be lubricated with vegetable oil or a non-stick agent, with a larger vessel on the inside and a smaller one on the outside. If the flower pot is planned to be large, or just want to increase the strength, it is additionally necessary to use steel wire / metal mesh to reinforce the surface.

Manufacturing progress:

  • a larger vessel is filled with concrete up to half;
  • a small vessel is installed in its center;
  • it should be pressed so that it enters the mass, but at the same time a few centimeters remain to the bottom;
  • something heavy (brick, sand, stone) is placed inside the smaller container in order to ensure its permanent position;
  • the solution is reported to the top of the larger product;
  • if the planter involves planting live plants, then at the stage when the cement has not completely set, you need to drill several holes for moisture removal;
  • in order to create optimal conditions for solidification and prevent dust, household debris, insects from entering the mixture, the pot is covered with a film;
  • for 2-4 days the solution remains to harden;
  • after this time, the inner vessel is removed, and the flowerpot continues to dry in the sun for several more days.
