How to decorate an old refrigerator. Refrigerator decor with your own hands: how to decorate household appliances

The old refrigerator is still in good condition, but is very dilapidated and covered with rust in places? Or maybe it seems to you that this large metal “box” does not fit into the interior in any way? Or do you just want to spruce up your kitchen a little? In this article, we will talk about 8 ways to decorate a refrigerator, from DIY painting to decoupage, and also present 80 photo ideas of original alterations.

Method 1. Painting with slate paint and painting with crayons (+ master class)

The slate-coated refrigerator door is the perfect place to keep notes: shopping and to-do lists, recipes and family reminders, and sweet notes. And, of course, it is very convenient for children to draw on such a “board” while mom is cooking. To turn refrigerator doors into writing boards, you can choose one of the following four methods:

Method 1. Painting with slate paint. This method is somewhat more complicated than the others, and besides, it excludes the possibility of returning the surface to its original form. But you can paint with slate paint not only the doors, but the entire body of the equipment, and the coating itself will turn out to be more durable.

Method 2. Finishing with chalk wallpaper. Chalk wallpapers are easier to work with, and most importantly, they can be peeled off without leaving marks on the surface of the equipment. However, the coating is not very durable and needs to be changed periodically. In addition, chalk wallpaper is more difficult to decorate rounded doors, corners, bypass handles, displays and protruding parts when gluing. If you want to glue the entire body, the coating will have visible seams. For this reason, it is best to decorate only the door or part of the door with chalk wallpaper.

Method 3. Mounting a magnetic slate board. Such a board is mounted and dismantled as easily as one large magnet, and you can not only draw on it, but also attach small magnets. Most often, ready-made magnetic boards are not too large, and a large panel can only be purchased on order.

Method 4. Mounting the slate on neodymium magnets. This method is good because it allows you not to paint the refrigerator and, if desired, it is easy to remove the chalk board.

Please note that the refrigerator does not have its own handles, its doors open by handles screwed to the chalkboard

What you will need:

  • Thin sheet of plywood (3-6 mm);
  • Slate paint, primer (preferably), paint brush / roller, cuvette;
  • Moldings for framing the board;
  • Jigsaw or hand saw;
  • Neodymium magnets with holes for screws (the price of one magnet is about 80 rubles, their number and adhesion strength depend on the weight of the board).

Such a super-magnet the size of a ruble coin can easily hold 3 kg of weight.

  • Shurpas (by the number of magnets), a screwdriver;
  • Stickers on furniture legs (they are needed to avoid scratches on the surface of the doors, as well as chips on the magnets themselves. Such pads are sold in Ikea and hardware stores. If desired, pieces of thin rubber or fleece-type fabric can be glued to the magnets);
  • Furniture handle for each board/door and screws for fastening.

Instruction:

Step 1. We measure the parameters of one or two refrigerator doors.

Step 2. We cut out boards from a sheet of fiberboard exactly according to the size of the doors.

Step 3. Paint the board with a primer, wait for it to dry. Next, apply the first layer of slate paint, let it dry, apply the next layer and leave again for the time recommended by the manufacturer. Finally, apply the third coat of paint (preferably).

Step 4. While the paint dries, unscrew the native handles of your refrigerator.

Step 5. We cut and mount the moldings on the board (you can use wood glue). If desired, moldings can be painted.

Step 6. Now we glue a protective pad on each magnet, then we fasten all the magnets to the back of the board. Be careful and strictly (!) Follow the rules for working with neodymium magnets.

Neodymium magnets are small magnets, but very powerful. They are sold in special online stores in a variety of shapes, sizes and capacities (adhesion strength is indicated on the package). For our project, flat magnets are suitable so that the gap between the board and the door is not too large. The main thing is that the total adhesion force of the magnets exceeds the weight of your board twice (!), otherwise it will slide down.

Step 7. Hooray! The board is ready. Now we attach furniture handles to it.

Step 8 Now it's time to install the board(s). Try opening each door by pulling on the handle, if the board is still and the door opens easily, then your project is complete. If you feel that the board is not attached to the door tightly enough, add a few more magnets.

Method 2. Vinyl stickers

Vinyl stickers are easy to stick and peel off without a trace, they are inexpensive and are sold in a wide variety of designs, and therefore they can be changed frequently to suit your mood. For example, geometric shapes, images of animals, plant and flower motifs, words and phrases can decorate a refrigerator.

  • Vinyl stickers can be bought at hardware stores, craft stores, various online stores (for example, on Aliexpress), and also ordered from a printing house.
  • Simple stickers for the refrigerator can be cut by hand from self-adhesive paper.

Method 3. Film or magnetic panels with photo printing

Want to turn your fridge into a realistic phone booth, a retro soda machine or a bottle of your favorite drink? Or maybe you just want to transfer a beautiful photo of your authorship to the door? Then your choice is vinyl film or magnetic vinyl (magnetic panel) with photo printing. Both coating options can not only decorate the refrigerator, but also protect its facades from scratches and dirt.

  • A film with photo printing is different in that it is glued by smoothing it manually or under the influence of warm air (at home, this is done with a hairdryer). The latter easily fits even on the rounded doors and corners of the refrigerator. Both types of film are suitable for decorating the entire body of equipment.

How to stick a sticker with photo printing on the refrigerator with your own hands? The first step is to degrease the surface with any degreaser or alcohol solution. The handles on the door must first be removed, it is advisable to remove other protruding parts as well. Then the film is carefully applied and simultaneously smoothed with some flat object (for example, a bank card), bubbles and wrinkles are smoothed out. Further, the film is folded along the edges, also smoothed, and the excess is cut off with a clerical knife. And finally, the handles are screwed into place.

  • Magnetic panels are flexible sheets of 0.5 mm thick vinyl with a magnetic back and photo printing on the front. In fact, these are just large magnets that are made exactly to the dimensions of the doors (but not more than 60 cm wide). Most often, magnetic panels decorate the doors, but they can also decorate the sides of the refrigerator. Magnetic vinyl can be easily assembled and dismantled without leaving any marks.

Method 4. Painting in a bright color, to match the headset or wall (+ master class)

You can update an old refrigerator or fit appliances into the interior simply by painting it with metal paint. The main thing here is to choose the right color.

  • If you paint the refrigerator to match the wall or headset, it will seem less bulky. This approach is especially good for small kitchens .

  • If the interior of your kitchen seems too boring for you, then the refrigerator can be painted in a very bright color.

  • In the interior of the kitchen in retro style, country music or provence a refrigerator of red or pastel color - puddle pink or pale blue will look great.

It is best and easiest to paint a refrigerator with your own hands with spray paint. Ideally, this should be a particularly resistant alkyd enamel or acrylic paint for metal. Canned paint will also work, but it's important to use a quality paint brush to achieve a perfectly even finish.

Instruction:

Step 1. Lightly sand the surface to remove the gloss. If there is rust or chips somewhere, then we also remove them and level them with sandpaper.

Step 2. Clean and degrease the surface with an alcohol solution.

Step 3. With masking tape we cover everything that we want to protect from painting, we close the refrigerator chamber with a film. Don't forget to put film or newspapers on the floor and open the window.

Step 4. Shake the can well and start spraying the paint with a uniform thin layer and let it dry, then apply the second and third layers (if necessary). Remember that instead of one thick layer of paint, it is better to apply two thin ones.

  • To increase the durability of the paint and facilitate its application, it is advisable to first coat the surface with a primer.

Step 5. We cover the surface with a matte or glossy varnish, which will make the new coating more durable and moisture resistant.

Method 5. Hand painting (+ video tutorial)

Hand painting can turn a refrigerator into a unique art object or simply into a very nice and “animate” piece of furniture. You can paint the technique with paints and brushes, special acrylic markers or airbrushes.

It is better to trust complex compositions to professionals, but with your own hands you can draw a simple drawing, use a stencil or masking tape (to create stripes). Here is a large selection of photos of simple refrigerator painting ideas that even a beginner can implement.

From this video tutorial you will learn how to decorate an old refrigerator with your own hands using a stencil in the form of a lace tablecloth.

Method 6. Decoupage (+ master class)

Decoupage is an easy and great way to update an old refrigerator, adapt it to a rustic or traditional style kitchen, or complete it with hand-painted or molding decorations.

Decoupage refrigerator type Side by side

To decoupage the refrigerator you will need:

  • Multi-layer napkins with the desired print, or better, special cards for decoupage (they can be large in size, and the drawings themselves are already composed in the composition);
  • Scissors;
  • PVA glue;
  • Brushes: flat squirrel (for decoupage and applying varnish) and thin synthetic (for drawing details);
  • Pencil (for marking and sketching);
  • Acrylic paints;
  • Acrylic varnish (matte, glossy or with craquelure effect).

Instruction:

Step 1. Prepare the surface: degrease with an alcohol solution if you plan to glue the pattern on the factory finish, or paint the refrigerator in the desired color and wait until the paint dries.

Step 2. Separate the layer with the pattern from the napkin and cut out the desired element along the contour with scissors. Cut as many blanks as needed.

Step 3. Start gluing the first drawing: glue it on the wrong side, apply it to the desired place, then carefully smooth out the bubbles and folds with a brush, remove excess glue with a damp cloth with tamping movements. Next, glue all the other blanks, moving from the center to the edges, starting with large and ending with small elements.

  • Before sticking napkins, it is advisable to apply markings to the surface of the door.

Step 4. When the whole composition is formed, draw small details and contours.

Step 5. Apply two or more coats of matt or glossy varnish to the drawing to give it greater strength and moisture resistance.

Method 7. Decoration with moldings and "carved" details (+ master class)

If your kitchen is decorated in a classic style, then a grandiose project of converting the refrigerator into ... an old sideboard will help you fit a free-standing refrigerator into its interior.

View of the old refrigerator before and after remodeling

What you need for decoration:

  • Moldings made of wood or PVC;
  • Carved furniture decoration in wood/PVC or gypsum/polyurethane moldings in the form of a crown, as well as patterned corners (if possible);
  • Saw for trimming moldings;
  • Glue for metal.

What you need for painting:

  • adhesive primer;
  • White chalk paint (you can do it yourself according to recipes from the Internet or buy, say, from designer Daria Geller);
  • Chalk paint of the main color;
  • Brush for painting, 1 round brush with a diameter of 8-7 cm (useful for both painting and waxing), medium flat brush (for wax);
  • Dark wax (can be replaced with a mixture of colorless wax with dark brown paint);
  • The wax is colorless;
  • Painting accessories: film, masking tape, etc.

Instruction:

Step 1. We remove the gloss from the surfaces with a sandpaper, clean and degrease it with an alcohol solution.

Step 2. We make markings and glue carved details: crown, moldings, corners.

Step 3. Paint the refrigerator with white paint in two layers, allowing each layer to dry.

Step 4. Now, with a large round brush, roughly paint the refrigerator in the main color in one layer in cross movements. This is how you get the faded effect.

  • Handles must either be removed and come to terms with their absence, or also painted.
  • At this stage, the decor and baseboards can be painted with the main color paint or white/gold/silver (in this case, the paint will get outside the decor, but this is not a problem).

Step 5. We apply colorless wax to the baseboards and decor with a cloth or brush, let it soak and dry, then rub the excess with a paper towel.

Step 6. Now we apply dark wax to the decor and baseboards with a brush, then rub it in and remove the excess with paper napkins, achieving the desired effect of antiquity.

In places where the wax seems too dark, apply a little colorless wax and wipe the surface with a paper towel.

Step 7. Now treat the entire refrigerator with colorless wax with the same large round brush (you don’t need to wash it from paint residue!). When the wax dries, remove the excess with a tissue. Ready!

Method 8. Decor with self-adhesive film

Alteration of the refrigerator with self-adhesive film is a budget and simple alternative to photo printing and painting. All you need to do to change the design of the refrigerator: degrease the surface and remove the handles, stick the film, simultaneously leveling it with a non-sharp flat object, then wrap it around the edges, cut off the excess and return the handles to their place.

  • Unfortunately, the self-adhesive film, unlike the film with photo printing, does not have a lamination layer and wears out quickly. In addition, it falls worse on uneven and rounded surfaces.

Refrigerator decor is a way out of a situation where the old thing does not fit into the new kitchen interior. In the case when the kitchen is small and the refrigerator needs to be placed in the corridor or even in the room, you can’t do without the appropriate decor. Even if you just want to cheer yourself up, change something and get satisfaction from it, do-it-yourself refrigerator decor is a great solution.

It is known that changing even one detail will help to perceive the whole situation in a new way. If you want changes in the kitchen, the decor of the refrigerator will help with this. There are several options available:

  • magnets, magnetic boards;
  • digital frames;
  • stickers, adhesive film;
  • decoupage.

After a pleasant summer vacation at the seaside, a winter vacation at a ski resort or abroad, everyone usually brings home a magnet. Decorate the refrigerator with them and the kitchen will become more fun.

You can glue the entire item from top to bottom or select several zones using magnets as note holders for family members.

Magnetic boards serve a similar purpose: as decoration and as a place for important messages. Digital frames on a magnet - an innovation that allows you to upload 10-20 photos. By attaching such a frame to the most sought-after place in the kitchen, i.e. on the refrigerator, you will bring something new and enjoy.

Vinyl stickers can turn an ordinary white object into a place where events unfold until the owners see it. Here the cat is trying to open the lower compartment, and there the mouse is hanging on the handle or raccoons are stealing from the freezer.

You can stick flowers, butterflies, clouds or spots of a cow, it all depends on the imagination and consent of the family. Adhesive film will make a familiar object unrecognizable. The film can imitate marble, a flower meadow or be just plain. With its help, the refrigerator will be transformed beyond recognition, and most importantly, quickly.

When the owner is ready to create, but does not have much money, decoupage will help out. Carefully peel off the white part of the four-layer napkin so as not to damage the design. Then apply PVA glue on the back of the picture and attach it to the refrigerator. Carefully smooth out any wrinkles. After drying, go over the surface of the picture several times with acrylic varnish. In a similar way, the decor of the refrigerator can be done using pictures from a magazine or calendar, making a collage. Fabric, fur and quilling are also suitable for appliqué.

More labor intensive options

What if there is a desire to make refrigerator decor, but there is no experience and imagination? Then you should turn to professionals. If funds are available, more expensive and time-consuming decor options are available:

  • object coloring;
  • artistic painting;
  • airbrushing.

Wanting to hide the yellowness or defects on the surface of the object, it is enough just to repaint it.

So the appearance of the old refrigerator will get a new life, and the kitchen interior will get a highlight. Artistic painting will help to make any item an integral part of the decor. A smooth transition of the picture from the wall to the refrigerator will make it a thing in its place. This is especially true when a kitchen item is forced to stand in a room.

Airbrushing is only for professionals if you want to see a masterpiece in the form of a painting by a famous artist, a wonderful landscape or a telephone booth. At the same time, you can come up with the design of the refrigerator yourself.

As you can see, some changes in life are within our power. Bring color to the kitchen, the place where the whole family meets every day. Then the mood will surely rise and everyone will want to chat longer at the table. And if the decor was carried out by all family members, it will be doubly pleasant. Best change!

As a rule, the decor of a refrigerator that has just been bought is not original. But even if you manage to find a refrigerator of an interesting design, this does not mean that it will fit perfectly into the interior of the kitchen. If the kitchen design is made in the original style, you can buy a regular white refrigerator and change it with decor. After all, it is not at all difficult to transform it with your own hands. Whatever design method you choose, remember that the refrigerator should have a coating that is easy to clean.

Simple Refrigerator Design Ideas

An ordinary white standard refrigerator can be a great field for your imagination to fly. The following design options are suitable even for people far from creativity.

  • Magnets are one of the easiest ways to decorate. You can buy magnets at the store or make your own. For decoration, several magnets may be enough, or you can occupy the entire surface with them.

  • Magnetic board. With this decor method, you can not only decorate the refrigerator, but also cheer yourself up. Attach funny pictures to the board or leave notes for your family.

  • Gadgets. Progress does not stand still, and in recent years digital photo frames have begun to appear. If you fix such a frame on the case, you can view photos of your loved ones or other images.

  • Vinyl stickers are one of the most popular decor options today. Stickers allow you to change the refrigerator beyond recognition in a short time. But they have their own minus - only a refrigerator with flat surfaces can be designed in this way. On older refrigerators, the film may lie unevenly.

Other ways to decorate

The following refrigerator design methods require special skills. However, as a result, this interior detail can become a real work of art.

  • Decoupage. The technique of this type of decor is to transfer the image from the napkin to any surface. With the help of decoupage, you can perfectly decorate an old piece of furniture.

  • Painting. With the help of paint, you can give the refrigerator any color and fit it exactly into the interior.

  • Art painting. If you are good at drawing, then this way of decorating is perfect for you. Draw the intended image and cover with a layer of varnish on top. This way of decorating will turn the refrigerator into a real art object and show everyone your talent.

  • Self-adhesive film. If you show imagination, then even with the help of such a boring material as self-adhesive film, you can transform the refrigerator and make it original. For example, you can combine films with different patterns or textures.

  • Airbrushing is the most expensive way to decorate. Only a professional can bring this to life, but at the end you will get a real stylish designer thing.

Don't be afraid to get creative with your refrigerator design. Decorating this piece of kitchen furniture can be a very fun activity that the whole family can get involved in.

To decorate the refrigerator yourself, there are many ways, such as decoupage, vinyl stickers, using magnets, painting.

Interior decor is the creation of an individual and harmonious appearance of the room. You can decorate not only walls, floors or ceilings, but also the surface of furniture and even household appliances. One of the popular items that people like to decorate is the refrigerator. Its body is large enough, which makes it possible to choose any design and technique you like. The plain surface of the refrigerator can be decorated with your own hands using decoupage, painting, stickers or in other ways.

Refrigerator decoration is a simple and at the same time very effective way to make a bright accent and give the interior a mood.

But, starting the creative process, one should not forget the main rule - the decor must match the style of the room, otherwise you can get the opposite effect in the form of a ridiculous appearance of the kitchen.

Variety of decor ideas

Modern technologies for the production of household appliances make it possible to produce items, in particular refrigerators, not only with a white, black or metal surface, but also in various other shades. There are also designer models that are real works of art. But such options cost a lot of money and not everyone will be able to afford it.

What to do when there is no opportunity to buy a stylish refrigerator, but you still want an unusual and original detail? The solution may be to decorate the surface of the equipment with your own hands.

There are many formatting methods. Here, everyone can choose exactly the variant of decor that will be most appropriate both for the realization of their creative fantasies and for decorating a particular interior. Among the popular options for decorating a refrigerator are the following:

  • magnets and magnetic boards;
  • decorative stickers;
  • painting;
  • decoupage.

Decoration with magnets and magnetic boards

The easiest and cheapest way to decorate your refrigerator is to use different magnets. These can be souvenirs brought with you from travels or donated by friends, as well as products purchased specifically as a decor for the surface of the refrigerator. For lovers of creative experiments, you can try to make magnets with your own hands.

For self-production, you will need salt dough, paints, an oven and a little imagination. Figures in the form of fruits, vegetables, various confectionery, flowers, etc. will look original. Blind by hand, the dough should be dried in the oven, and then painted. Attach magnets to the finished parts with glue and decorate the surface of the refrigerator.

The second way is to use a magnetic board. This item is able to perform not only a decorative role, but also a functional one. The surface of the board allows you to write or draw on it with chalk, special felt-tip pens or markers. So, you can easily write down your favorite recipes, menu for the day or week, shopping list, leave all kinds of messages and correspond with family members. A magnetic board is a fairly inexpensive and positive way to decorate not only the refrigerator, but also the interior of the kitchen as a whole.

Decoration with decorative stickers

One of the most popular and relatively inexpensive ways to decorate your refrigerator is to use vinyl decals. A wide selection of images will allow you to choose a good option that fits the interior in almost any style. If the store did not find what you need, you can always print the desired image on film and stick it on the surface of the refrigerator.

Popular stories include:

  • birds and animals;
  • flowers and plants;
  • landscapes;
  • various ornaments and prints, including animal skins;
  • butterflies;
  • textures of materials: wood, stone, brickwork, etc.

For a vinyl sticker, a refrigerator with a flat, flat surface is more suitable, since on old Soviet models with puffy and convex doors, the film may lie unevenly, with bubbles and other defects.

Decoration with painting

If you have a drawing skill, you can decorate the facades of the refrigerator with paintings. To work, you will need to have acrylic paints and a brush or stencil and a spray bottle on hand.

First of all, it is necessary to prepare the surface by degreasing it with technical alcohol. Then, you should apply a contour drawing with a simple pencil. Next, you can start painting the image using the selected paints and brushes of different sizes. The finished drawing should be thoroughly dried and covered with a layer of varnish on top, which will protect it from damage.

The image can be applied to the surface of the refrigerator and using a stencil. To do this, a sheet of paper with a cut out pattern must be fixed on the body of the equipment, and using a spray can, spray paint of the desired color on top. The finished drawing should also be dried and varnished.

Decoration with decoupage

Like do-it-yourself painting, decoupage requires creativity and skill. To make the kitchen look harmonious, you should select a pattern that matches the interior style. Decoupage involves decorating the surface with images cut out of paper.

A suitable picture can be purchased at a specialized needlework store, or you can choose any pattern you like in a magazine or print it on a printer. The top layer should be separated from the patterned napkin and glued to the refrigerator using PVA glue. After the image dries, apply varnish in several layers.

If ordinary printed paper is chosen as the basis, then, first of all, it is necessary to varnish it several times. Then, after drying, you need to place the picture in a bowl of water, put it on a spread towel with the image down and carefully peel off the paper base layer. As a result, a thin acrylic film should remain, which will subsequently be glued to the refrigerator.
