Dmitry Gushchin exam English. Preparation for the successful passing of the exam in English

I managed to finish school even before the USE was introduced. Of course, there are much more opponents of such an exam system than supporters, but this is already our reality, which is much easier to put up with than to resist.

Unified State Examination English language- difficult exam. In 2017, it is unlikely that you will be able to enter a good university with a basic level of passing an exam in English. To get a high score, you need to start preparing for the exam as early as possible.

As we know, the written part consists of 40 tasks for which students are given 3 hours, and includes:

  • test audition;
  • test reading;
  • lexical and grammatical tasks, also in the form of a test;
  • letter in two stages.

It is worth saying that for the first part of the English exam, they give a maximum of 80 points, if the student needs to increase the score, then he must come on the second day to pass the oral part.

If the written part can be trained by studying independently using various manuals, then for the oral part you need a teacher.

This post will be devoted to the most successful teaching aids for preparing for the exam in English on your own.

1. Macmillan Exam Skills for Russia

This is the only book to date for preparing for the exam, which consists of 15 complete tests in the new format of the exam, including the oral part. 5. Verbitskaya M.V. - USE. English language. Standard exam options. 10 (30) options

This textbook is included in the series known to all graduates “USE. FIPI - School", which was prepared by the developers of the control measuring materials for the unified state exam. Available in 2 types: 10 test options and 30 options. The difference, as you understand, is only in the number of tests. The collection of 30 tests contains 15 thematic options for all sections of the Unified State Examination, 15 standard examination options, tasks for the oral part, instructions for performing, answers to all tasks, etc.

It includes 150 essays, compiled in accordance with all the requirements for a written statement with elements of reasoning. The main purpose of this manual is to help students excel in essay writing.

Oh, this wonderful school time, with its vivid (and not so) memories, teachers, subjects, last bells, which, as usual, ends with one special touching event - the last bell. Parents are worried about their child, who will soon take his first step into adulthood.

But before celebrating graduation and entering the desired university, eleventh graders are forced to play an insidious game called "USE in English". Now, what d "ya know about it?

The exam in English is passed when they enter the humanities, for example: philology or linguistics, translation studies or teaching, international relations or regional studies, etc. As you may have noticed, training in the above areas is based on a foreign language, so English is considered a core subject.

The exam itself consists of written and oral parts, which are not held on more than one day. In the first - students pass the written part, it includes: listening, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary. In total, on this day, the graduate needs to complete 40 tasks in 180 minutes. Can you deal with that? The student can receive a maximum of 20 points for each of the sections. So, for the first day you can and should score 80 points.

The second part - the oral part of the Unified State Examination in English - takes place on a different day and is handed over at will. It lasts only 15 minutes and consists of 4 tasks. During this time, students will have to answer questions and describe pictures. On this day, the graduate can earn another +20 points.

It is logical that it makes sense to take the oral part: in case of unsuccessful answers, you do not lose anything, and in case of successful answers, you will earn additional points. Think about it! Thus, a graduate in the exam can score a maximum of 100 points. The minimum score to pass the exam is 22 points. If lower, then everything is gone! Below is the number of USE scores in English and the corresponding score:

It is obvious that I would like to pass the exam with a high score, because there is a chance to enter, for example, on a budget, and during the entire training to receive a decent scholarship and all kinds of goodies from the state.

Here are the best ways to prepare for the exam in English.

Dates of the Unified State Examination in English 2019

The approved exam schedule should be published in January 2019 (so far, it is known about the period for passing the main part of the subjects from May 28 to June 20). But today there is an opportunity to learn something interesting:

  • from the second half of March to mid-April 2019, for example, an early examination will be held, from March 21 to April 4. However, not all students can take the exam early. These graduates include those who graduated from school earlier than the 2018/2019 academic year, underachieving students of previous years without a certificate, as well as students of evening schools. Those who decided not to enter the university, but to go to serve in the army, can also pass the test ahead of schedule; children leaving to live abroad; applicants of foreign universities, or those who came to study from abroad. An exception is also made for children leaving for sports, cultural or scientific competitions or competitions, as well as for schoolchildren who are scheduled for medical procedures during the main test;
  • from the last days of May to the beginning of June 2019, the main period of the exam is scheduled. Wangui that the first exams will begin on May 28, 2019;
  • the start of the additional USE period is announced for September 4, 2019. Additional examinations will take place during the first half of September.

Changes in the Unified State Examination in English 2019

In principle, no special innovations have been noticed at the moment. Although there are some clarifications. For example, according to the wording of the criteria, which have become more specific and unambiguous. If earlier there were questions about what is considered a violation, then from now on there will be no more such questions. Comparison:

  • 2017 (the task was completed completely: the content reflects all the aspects indicated in the task (full answers were given to all questions, three questions were asked on the specified topic); the style of speech was chosen correctly, taking into account the purpose of the statement and the addressee; the norms of politeness accepted in the language are observed);
  • 2018 (the task was completed completely: the content reflects all the aspects specified in the task (full and accurate answers to all questions are given, three questions on the specified topic are correctly asked); the style of the speech is chosen correctly, taking into account the purpose of the statement and the addressee; the norms of politeness accepted in the language are observed ( 1 incomplete or inaccurate aspect allowed). The wording of task 4 in the "Speaking" block has been clarified.

Bonuses are good, but in order to successfully overcome this challenge, it is important to understand its strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, now let's talk about the structure of the exam, which is conditionally divided into four main blocks and one additional (195 minutes).

Listening Comprehension

In the first block (30 minutes), the student performs 3 tasks. The examiners turn on the recording and do not stop it until the very end, however, there are pauses between the fragments to read the tasks and transfer the answers to the form. For each correct answer in this and other parts of the exam, the student receives 1 point.

  • The first task is to listen to 6 statements and compare them with statements, one of which is redundant, that is, you will need to identify the correspondence between the main ideas and audio fragments.
  • In the second exercise, a dialogue and remarks are given - it is necessary to determine which statements are false (false) and which are true (true), in addition, to identify which statements were not mentioned in the text (not stated).
  • In the remaining 7 tasks (No. 3-9) it is proposed to listen to the interview and mark the correct answer from the three proposed. The student listens to the audio recording and selects the correct answer for each question. For this task, you can also get a maximum of 7 points.
Adviсe: understand the meaning of the words that the announcer says. There may be hidden answers to tasks.

Reading

In the second block (also 30 minutes), the ability to analyze and extract basic information from the text is tested. It also, like Listening, consists of 3 parts (9 tasks).

  • In task 10, 7 mini-texts are given (3-6 sentences in each) and 8 headings that must be selected for each text, while one heading is superfluous. Maximum points: 7.
  • In task 11, taking into account cause-and-effect relationships and the logic of presentation, you have to fill in a special text with six gaps. There are 7 passages to complete. So, one extra. Maximum points: 6.
  • In the remaining 7 tasks (No. 12-18) you read a short English text and 7 questions to it. For each question, 4 possible answers are given, from which you need to choose one correct one. Maximum points: 7.
Adviсe: try not to spend more than 10 minutes on 1 task; delve into the meaning of the text (look for keywords); learn / repeat how complex sentences are built; in the third task, questions after the text are arranged in the order in which they are answered in the text. That is, the answer to the first question will be at the beginning of the text, to the second question after the answer to the first, and so on.

Vocabulary and Grammar (Vocabulary & Grammar)

70% of tasks (No. 19-31) are aimed at knowledge of word formation and school curriculum on English grammar. In the last seven (No. 32-38) exercises, you must make a choice in favor of one of the four proposed answers, taking into account the context and the desired grammatical form. For everything about everything, 40 minutes are given.

  • First, a text with 7 missing words is given. To the right of it there are words that require grammatical transformation (put the verb at the right time, for example) and insertion. Max. number of points: 7.
  • In the second task - a text with 6 gaps. Again, you will need to grammatically transform (to form a single-root word that fits the text in meaning) and insert words into the text. Max. number of points: 6.
  • Again, the text with 7 gaps, you need to choose 1 correct option out of 4 proposed. Max. number of points: 7.
Adviсe: allocate no more than 12 minutes for all tasks (except for the second - there are 15); read the context; repeat: tenses and forms of verbs, voices (active and passive), comparative and superlative degrees of adjectives, ordinal numbers, the formation of suffixes and prefixes in English.

Written part (Writing)

In the fourth block, there are only 2 tasks (but what kind!), For which 80 minutes are given (for them you need to have time to write and check your work).

  • First, an informal letter to a friend (about 100-140 words). The text of a short letter from this very “friend” is given, after which there are questions. You need to read the text with questions, and write an answer (that is, answer a friend's questions and ask your own). Max. points: 6.
  • Secondly, an essay on a given topic (about 200-250 words). In this section, a statement is given (usually rather controversial), and the student writes an essay on this topic, expressing his opinion, demonstrating the learned vocabulary, knowledge of grammatical rules, the structure of various written works, and, finally, the ability to describe and argue his point of view in writing . You have to do 80 minutes. Max. number of points: 14.
Adviсe: do not write an essay on a draft in full, it is better to sketch your thoughts and ideas on it; do not forget about a high-quality introduction (description of the relevance of the problem) and conclusion; do not write addresses (even fictitious ones); look at examples of friendly letters in English on the Internet; do not forget to thank a friend for the letter (at the beginning); ask questions in a letter; love paragraphs (but not 1 sentence); use " I believe...», « I assume...», « In my opinion..."; colloquial style is also acceptable (" Guess what?», « What's up?», « Howdy!», « See ya!», « Later!»); write in a neutral style (task 2); justify and support your point of view by describing different ones; draw conclusions and draw conclusions.

Speaking

The oral part of the exam in English is not required, but speaking is necessary to get the highest possible score. This block is the shortest and only takes 15 minutes. It consists of four tasks for which you can get a total of 20 points: reading the English text aloud, asking questions to the announcement using keywords; description of the picture/photo; comparative analysis of two proposed photographs, guided by a given plan. The student submits assignments in front of a computer, which shows the countdown, and his answers are recorded. At the same time, there is an organizer in the audience who monitors the course of the exam and, at the first doubtful situation, has the right to use firearms (jk).

  • In the first task there will be a text of a near-scientific nature, which must be read aloud in the most expressive way. 1.5 minutes will be allotted for this (+1.5 for preparation). Accordingly, for the entire task - no more than 3 minutes. The task is worth 1 point.
  • The second task is an advertisement for which you need to come up with 5 questions based on keywords. Preparation - 1.5 minutes, wording of each question - 20 seconds. Total - 3 minutes. Here you can earn 5 points.
  • In the third task, 3 pictures/photos will be shown. We choose one and describe it according to the proposed plan. The task takes about 3.5 minutes. For successful completion, 7 points are given.
  • And in the fourth task, we are again offered pictures. This time 2 that you want to compare and describe their similarities and differences. You will also need to explain why the chosen topic is close to the graduate. The number of minutes and points is equal to the number of the same in the previous task.
Adviсe: practice pronunciation and read texts on various topics with the correct intonation and expression (see YouTube for Christ's sake!); observe pauses, stress and intonation; do not forget about time and try to read clearly, but tighten; learn to ask questions to texts on different topics; know how to compose questions correctly; carefully read the assignments and answer all questions; tell which photo you chose at the beginning of the answer (“ I"ve chosen the photo number..."); most likely you will have to describe a photo of a “friend”; use speech clichés like: the 1st picture depicts ...», « whereas the 2nd shows us ...», « the main difference is that ...», « also, they have the same ...», « in comparison to the first picture, this one is ...».

Not every school teacher devotes enough time in his lessons to teaching the perception of foreign speech by ear. Audiobooks, songs of your favorite artists, films or TV series in English dubbing will come to the rescue. Watch at least a couple of episodes of your favorite series or movie, and listen to an audiobook on your way to school.

The following resources may help you:

By the way! If you want to learn how to correctly write an essay in English for the USE 2019, then read!

Let's look at the changes that the USE has undergone compared to last year.

Typical mistakes in preparing for the exam

The collection of the main typical mistakes in preparing for the exam in English, first of all, includes the inability to correctly distribute the preparation time. The student knows what he is having trouble with. More time should be devoted to this. Another common problem is the inability to speak. You can practice this skill by constantly playing small dialogues in your head with everyday situations, or by describing objects, people and buildings that you see on your way (to perfection) to school, cinema or supermarket.

In addition, there are the following mistakes when preparing for the English exam:

  • Out-of-date tutorials or resources on the network can also significantly harm the preparation. Graduates are offered many materials that promise the best preparation. But not everyone is up to the task. It is better to use those teaching aids that professionals advise. It is definitely recommended to go to the FIPI website, where the latest data is always published.
  • Inconsistent preparation. The student either does not sit down at the textbooks at all, or sits at them without rest. It is necessary to make a plan over time and strictly follow it. It is necessary to start preparing for exams from the fall of the 11th grade, and even better - from the 10th grade. The amount of knowledge is large, it takes a lot of time.
  • Ignoring incomprehensible material. When preparing for an exam, you should start repeating things that are not clear. To fully assimilate the material, read the topic in the textbook, contact a tutor or your teacher, sign up for courses and find out what you do not understand, do not try to calm yourself down. With the material that you master, it will be much easier: a few days before the exam, you can quickly remember and go over all the previously weak points.
  • Not comprehensive training. The teachers themselves during the lesson most often pay attention to reading and grammar, while forgetting about the correct pronunciation and perception. Alas, so far such a sad trend can be traced in many schools. It is worth remembering that all the components of the program will be presented in the exam in the tasks. And it is essential to pay attention to each.
  • cramming. The complexity of the exam lies in the fact that it is designed for understanding the material, some tasks are designed for an impromptu answer. Typically, such tests allow you to get the most points and compensate for the lost ones. Having memorized all the material, you will not be able to explain similar examples that will be presented in the test. In addition, you will not have enough time to memorize the entire amount of material.
  • Passing only trial texts. Yes, they are definitely needed, but do not expect that if you scored the maximum score on these, then the main exam is in your pocket. Tasks are completed in different ways, tests are mixed, becoming, in their own way, individual.
  • Wrong mental attitude may interfere with the exam. The ability to concentrate and relax at the right time will help to tune in correctly. Positive thoughts also play a role. They help you get the job done. Believe in yourself, but do not drive - too much arrogance can be a treacherously insidious enemy. Everything should be in moderation.

Conclusion

Is it difficult to pass the exam in English? Not! Preparation for the exam in English is really important, because. an exam is a kind of challenge that must be approached with all responsibility. The higher the USE score, the more freedom in choosing a decent educational institution, which will subsequently help to make the dream come true and become an outstanding specialist in the field that is interesting. Big and friendly family EnglishDom

From 2022 (2020 for some regions) USE in English will be included in the number of mandatory exams along with exams in mathematics and the Russian language. But now the question preparation for the exam in English is relevant to many students. Good scores on it (not lower than four, i.e. 59-83 points) are required for admission to many universities in the faculties of philology. It makes sense to take this exam for those who are not going to connect their lives with the language: firstly, it is the USE in English that has the highest success rate (above 22 points), and secondly, English will certainly come in handy for you throughout your life , and preparation for the exam will provide you with the necessary knowledge.

From the article you will learn:

Unfortunately, preparing for the exam in English is not so easy. Experts advise starting two years in advance or one, if at the moment your level of language proficiency is not lower than Intermediate.

To confidently pass the exam, you need an English Upper-Intermediate level, but it is not provided by the school curriculum. The conditions for completing assignments in the USE have their own specifics, and if you do not practice on real assignments, which can be found on the website of the Federal Institute for Pedagogical Measurements, for example, or in the USE Open Bank of Assignments, you may find that you are not able to fulfill all the requirements.

Below I will tell how to pass the exam in English what parts and tasks it consists of, what can be expected on the exam. I will also give useful tips for completing the tasks of the English exam in each of its sections.

Conditions for passing the exam in English

Passing the exam in English with the minimum acceptable score is not so difficult: for this you need to score only 22 points. For each part of the exam, if you complete it perfectly, 20 points are given. You won’t pass the exam in English at all: answers to some of the tasks you need to choose from a limited number of options, so according to probability theory, you will have some correct answers, even if you put them down at random.

It should be remembered that different tasks “stand” in different ways. So, for the correct reading of a small text aloud, you will receive only one point, and a well-written essay can bring you 14. With this in mind, you can distribute your forces in preparation; but we should not forget that many of the skills and abilities required in some parts of the exam will be useful in others. So, without knowledge and without an extensive vocabulary, you are unlikely to be able to or understand what is being said in the dialogue that you are.

The exam is taken in two steps, and only one of its parts, written, is mandatory. Unfortunately, it will bring you only 80 points, and you can get another 20 for oral, the main stage of which takes only 15 minutes. By signing up for the oral part, you do not lose anything, but you get the opportunity to get the required score.

For the exam, you will definitely need an identity document (passport) and a black pen. It is desirable to use a bright writing pen - capillary, gel or fountain. This is due to the fact that your answers will be scanned and sent to machine recognition. If you write them with a ballpoint pen or other color, the program may not recognize them correctly and you will lose precious points. In this case, only an appeal can help you - a request to recheck the exam results.

You may not bring anything other than the specified items into the auditorium. Any electronic devices, notebooks, books, proofreaders are prohibited. If you need to leave, one of the examiners will follow you. Fraud attempts will be severely punished: the process of passing the exam will be interrupted by you, and a special commission will make a decision on whether you will be allowed to retake.

If for a good reason (you must have documentary evidence, for example, a certificate from a medical institution) you cannot take the exam along with everyone else, you may be allowed to do this later, during the reserve period.

The structure of the exam in English

As already said, USE in English consists of compulsory (written) and optional (oral) parts, which are taken on different days. The written part is rented in a general audience and lasts 3 hours. To pass the oral exam, you will be invited in a randomly drawn queue to an office where there is all the necessary equipment. The duration of the exam itself is only 15 minutes.

The written part of the exam is divided into four sections: listening, reading, grammar and vocabulary, writing. You are allocated a certain time for each of the sections, during which time you are free to distribute the order in which you will complete the tasks. In part, this does not apply to listening, where the task is largely tied to listening to the text.

You can refer to the table below for a summary of how much time you will be given for each section. USE, what tasks you will have to complete in each of them, and how many points you can score for these tasks. More detailed information can be found in the relevant paragraphs of the article.

During the audition, you will be given to listen to three audio fragments corresponding to the three tasks in this section. It can be both monologues and dialogues on a wide variety of topics (mainly everyday). During playback, the audio recording does not stop, but at the same time, the texts for each task are heard twice, and pauses are made between them, during which the dealers must familiarize themselves with the written part of the task and write down their answers.

The pronunciation that you will hear during listening is British. This creates additional difficulties in the performance of already difficult tasks. There is very little emphasis on watching videos or listening to audio in English in the school curriculum, and students themselves, if they are exposed to media content in the original, tend to choose more numerous American films and series, which does not contribute enough to building up the British voice bank.

Tasks included in the section "Listening"

Task number 1. In the first task, 6 statements will be presented to your attention, which will need to be correlated in meaning with 7 statements (one statement is superfluous). Speakers are indicated by English letters from A to F, statements are numbered. You will need to indicate in a special plate opposite each letter the number of the corresponding approval.

Task number 2. In the second task, you will have to listen to a short text (most likely a dialogue) and familiarize yourself with seven statements, denoted by letters from A to G. After that, in the table, you will put one of the three numbers under each letter, 1, 2 or 3, where one means , that the statement is true (True), two - that it is false (False), and three - that there was not enough information in the text to determine the truthfulness or falsity of the statement (Not stated).

Task number 3. They turn on an audio recording (for example, an interview), you listen to it carefully, read 7 unfinished statements, and for each of these statements choose an ending that is appropriate in meaning from the three options. You write the number of the option in the proposed field.

  1. Listening texts and questions in tasks are designed in such a way that students rely on the meaning of what they heard, and not on the words snatched out in the flow of speech. Try to understand what the speaker is trying to convey. Please note that in the first task, the most important information for the correct answer is usually heard towards the end of the statement.
  2. See, preferably British. It helps to review the same scenes several times, and at first without subtitles and translation, so that the brain does not get used to relying on printed text. When you learn how to navigate the sound of a foreign speech, you can move on to sources without a visual component: audio books, radio programs,. There are a huge number of the latter, ranging from and ending with artistic audio series, and it is easy to find among them suitable for your level. Some of them also have official or unofficial transcripts (a record of what was said in text form), which can facilitate initiation.

Reading

In this section of the exam, you will have to prove your ability to understand the meaning of an unfamiliar text. There are quite a few texts that you will have to deal with, and two of them are relatively long (around the page). You only have about 10 minutes for each task, so you wouldn't be able to rely on a dictionary even if it were allowed.

Tasks included in the "Reading" section

Task number 1. You are invited to read 7 short, 5-7 sentences, texts, usually related to one topic or representing paragraphs of one text. Your task is to choose for each of the fragments of the text one of the 8 headings indicated above and reflecting their meaning. One of the headings is redundant.

Task number 2. In the second task, you will find a text from which 6 fragments have been removed (usually completing the sentence started in the text). The deleted fragments, to which one extra one has been added, are listed below in random order, and you need to determine which one belongs where.

Task number 3. In the third task you will have to read a rather voluminous text. Below it are 7 questions and incomplete statements, each of which has four possible answers. You need to choose the appropriate one from them, based not only on the details of what you read, but also on the general understanding of the author's thoughts and the message embedded in the text.

  1. As in the case of listening, it is far from always possible to find words in the text that match the desired answer option, and sometimes such a strategy can even be harmful. Try to understand what thought the author put into each of the fragments of the text.
  2. When completing the third task, it is useful to take into account that the questions to it are given approximately in the order in which the answer to them can be found in the text.
  3. When you insert missing fragments into the text of the second task, it makes sense to rely not only on the essence of the sentence, but also on the grammatical compatibility of its various parts. So, a comma placed in front of the missing fragment will most likely mean that we are talking about a complex sentence, the subordinate part of which is attached to the main one with the help of the allied word (“which”, if we are talking about something inanimate, “who”, if we are talking about about a person, “where”, “how”), and a comma placed after the missing fragment will clearly indicate that it cannot end with a preposition.
  4. To prepare for this section, it is useful to read, as well as non-fiction articles and news columns. Write out unfamiliar words from them; at the same time, try not to take up the dictionary right away, but first guess their meaning from the context and only then check your guess. If the level of your English has reached Intermediate - Upper-Intermediate, it is better to find out the meaning of an unfamiliar word not in English-Russian, but in an English-English explanatory dictionary.
  5. Expand your vocabulary in any other way convenient for you. To help with this, USE solvers can come, and, allowing you to memorize new words at the most natural pace and / or game form for you.

Grammar and vocabulary (Use of English)

The third section, Use of English, tests your knowledge of English grammar, semantic shades and word combinations, word-formation tools. This is at the same time the easiest section, since it requires the minimum application of creative forces, and the most difficult, since accurate knowledge is needed to complete it correctly.

Tasks included in the section "Grammar and vocabulary"

Task number 1. In the first task, you are given a text (or two short ones), in 7 places of which words are missing. The correct words are listed to the right of the gap, and you need to use them in the correct grammatical form. For verbs, this usually means the need to put them in the correct tense form, form a passive voice or participle from them, and agree with the subject. In pronouns, you may need to change the number or make them possessive. For adjectives, the change usually consists in the formation of the correct degrees of comparison, for nouns - the plural.

Task number 2. The second task is also a text with gaps (in the amount of 6), only this time you will have to form other parts of speech from the words given next to each other using suffixes and prefixes. You will need to correctly determine what part of speech is required in the text, and use word-formation tools that are appropriate in meaning.

Task number 3. This task is the only one in the section where you can choose from the proposed options (four), but this does not prevent it from being the most difficult. You are given a text with 7 missing words, and below you will see four words with which you can fill in each of the gaps. These words are chosen to be either similar in meaning (of course, there are nuances in their use that must be relied upon when deciding which one to use in this case), or in spelling, or in the role that they usually play. in the text. Also in the third task, you may need to insert the desired preposition or part of the phrasal verb.

  1. To successfully pass this section, a lot of things need to be simply memorized in any way convenient for you. Draw, study which suffixes are used to form each of the parts of speech and what their meaning is. Read the text carefully to determine correctly what grammatical form you need to put the word into or what part of speech to form from it, then think about how to do it.
  2. When memorizing verbs (for example, writing out unfamiliar ones from the text), always learn them along with the control; remember whether they require a preposition after them, and if so, which one. Pay special attention to verbs that require a preposition that is difficult to derive from the meaning (for example, “be angry with someone” - “be angry with someone”).
  3. When writing words in the gaps, carefully follow the rules for filling out the examination forms. Letters are written at regular intervals; if the answer consists of several words (as, for example, in analytical (compound) forms of verbs), do not make spaces between words.

Letter

The "Writing" section includes two voluminous tasks for which 80 minutes are allotted. Both tasks require the examinee to write a text with a specific focus, which imposes certain limits on both form and content. You are required not only to know English, but also to know the characteristic features of texts of this type.

Tasks included in the section "Letter"

Task number 1. Your attention will be presented with a letter from a foreign friend or pen pal, where they will share information from their life with you and ask a few questions. You are required to answer these questions in the form of a counter letter 100-140 words long and ask a certain number of your own on the topic indicated in the task. At the same time, it is extremely important to properly format the letter. This is done according to the following scheme:

  1. In the upper right corner, indicate the city, country and date of writing the letter under each other (in the format day / month / year). You do not need to write the address in more detail! One line is skipped between country and date.
  2. On the left side of the page, we write the appeal “Dear ___”, where we substitute the name of your addressee, after which we put a comma.
  3. Despite the fact that the previous line ends with a comma, we start writing with a red line and a capital letter. We thank the interlocutor for the sent letter; you can also apologize for not immediately sat down to answer, or mention what emotions the letter aroused in you.
  4. We answer the interlocutor's questions. In this case, you can use the colloquial style and abbreviated grammatical forms of words, exclamation marks and dots, but you should refrain from slang and vulgarisms.
  5. We ask our own questions according to the conditions of the assignment.
  6. We complete the letter; you can report the reasons that prevent you from writing more voluminous, say that you will wait for an answer, wish something to the interlocutor.
  7. On the left under the letter we write one of the special final template phrases (“Best regards”, “Lots of love”, “Warm wishes”, etc.; while doing this, it should be borne in mind that some of them are only suitable for business style and will seem too formal for friendly correspondence, while others, on the contrary, will be too intimate and therefore inappropriate). Put a comma after it.
  8. Under the template phrase, we write our name without putting a period after it.

Task number 2. The second task is to write an essay of 200-250 words on a specified topic. The essay should have a clear composition and include five paragraphs. The first and last paragraphs are the introduction and conclusion, in the second paragraph you indicate your opinion on the issue and give arguments in its favor, in the third paragraph you highlight the opposite point (or points of view), in the fourth you explain why you settled on the point of view that protect.

Tips for preparing and passing the written part of the EGE in English

  1. Watch your word limit carefully! For writing, the limits of what is permitted are 90-154 words, for an essay - 180-275. If you write less, the task will not be checked at all and you will receive 0 points, if more, they will not check everything that is outside the limit. In this way, you will lose compositionally significant parts, and with them, scores.
  2. Practice writing texts of a strictly specified volume. Check the number of words yourself; remember that in a letter, the address and signature are also included in the total. To some extent, it is possible to regulate the number of words, using the fact that numerals written in numbers (1990, 234) or as a compound word with a hyphen (fifty-nine) are considered one word, and written in several separate words - according to their number (one thousand nine hundred twenty). Abbreviations and short grammatical forms (wouldn't, I'd, it's), in contrast to their full spelling, also count as one word.
  3. Learn how to write an essay correctly. I told and cited on this site.
  4. Create your own toolkit of cliché phrases used in essays and texts of a similar type to introduce an idea, to give an example, to contrast, to describe a causal relationship, to move to the other side of the issue.
  5. Carefully monitor the style of your writing. In an essay, avoid emotionally colored vocabulary and colloquial expressions, in a letter - clerical work.

Speaking

The oral part of the exam in English is voluntary and is taken separately from the written part - on a different day and usually in a different place. Unlike a written exam, you will take speaking one or more people in a room specially equipped for this. You will be given a headset (headphones + microphone) to record and listen to your answers, and under the supervision of the examiner, you will begin the tasks shown on the screen, based on the instructions of the program.

Unlike the written part of the exam, you are not free to use the time allotted for this part of the exam. You will complete the tasks in the order in which they appear on the screen, and the time limits in which you can record your answer are extremely strict. In total, the oral part of the exam lasts 15 minutes, and at the end of it you will have the opportunity to listen to how high-quality the audio recordings turned out. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to deceive the system and fix a belatedly noticed error: overwriting is possible only after contacting the examiner, who must make sure that the matter is precisely in its quality.

Below you can watch a video explaining the exam in detail.

Tasks included in the "Speaking" section

Task number 1. You have only 3 minutes for this task. One and a half of them are allotted for you to familiarize yourself with a short (10-15 sentences) text, which you then have to read aloud. It is important not only to pronounce words correctly, but also to adhere to the pauses given by punctuation, and also to monitor intonation. For reading the text you will be given 1 point.

Task number 2. In the second task, you will be shown an illustrated advertisement. According to the terms of the assignment, you are interested in the product and / or service that the ad is talking about (this can be a subscription to the pool or gym, an excursion, an overnight stay in a hotel, etc.), and you need to find out some details about this. The information you need to get is written in five bullet points below the ad. You are given a minute and a half to orient yourself, and then you will have to ask a question for each of the points. You have exactly 20 seconds to write down one question.

Task number 3. In the third task, you will be shown three photographs, from which you need to choose one and, after a minute and a half, briefly describe it. It is important not to forget to follow the legend in the quest conditions. It may change from year to year; in the last exam, it was that all the photos were taken from your personal photo album, and you need to describe one of them to a friend.

When describing, it is important to adhere to the form of the answer. Start with “I’ve chosen photo number…” to indicate which photo you are describing, then talk about it based on the plan provided to you in the assignment. It is important not to deviate from it and answer as concisely as possible, since you are given only two minutes to answer, and if you do not hear all the information that is asked for, it will cost you points. In total, you can get 7 points for this task.

Task number 4. The fourth task of the oral part of the exam is similar to the previous one, only in it you will be shown two pictures, and you will have to talk about both of them. You will be given one and a half minutes to prepare, and then in 2 minutes you will need to compare them, adhering to the plan given in the task. Describing what happens on each of them will not be enough; you should find their similarities and differences (or rather, similarities or differences of what is depicted on them), and also talk about your attitude towards them. For this task, you can also get 7 points.

Tips for preparing and passing the oral part of the EGE in English

  1. Due to the tight time frame of the oral part of the exam and the mental pressure it puts on you, you definitely need to practice dealing with these tasks and under these conditions. You can do it either on this site.
  2. Remember that handing over in front of a computer is very different from handing over in front of an examiner, because you won't be able to rely on the reaction of the interlocutor. This format takes some getting used to.
  3. Record your speech on a voice recorder (you can use the one built into your smartphone) and listen to the result. If you have a headset for voice communication or a laptop with a built-in microphone, you can also refer to the online resource Vocaroo Voice Recorder, with which you can easily record and then download it for yourself for later use. So you can get used to the sound of your voice, track down pronunciation errors that are obvious from the side, and practice keeping within the allotted time.
  4. Learn stable speech constructions that are used in comparison or contrast. You can also learn that do not add additional meaning to the text, but which can fill a pause while you think about the next part of your answer (“actually”, “indeed”, “in fact”, “as far as I know/can judge”) .
  5. Try not to worry and not get lost if you realize that you made a mistake. Grammar mistakes and mispronunciation of words are normal in speech, and if there are not too many of them, the score for them is not reduced. The main thing that is being tested is your ability to express the desired idea in English. Focus on getting all the information that the task requires of you into your speech.

A hot time is approaching for graduates - on the eve of the Unified State Examination, including in English. Millions of 11th graders are actively studying textbooks, taking private lessons from tutors, and cramming the rules. But in the 21st century, the Internet has become a great helper for those who need to prepare for the exam in English. In this article, we will provide an overview of the best online resources for preparing for this exam, as well as consider the structure of the final test and give useful tips on how to pass the exam in English.

The structure of the exam in English 2018

The USE (Unified State Exam) is a final examination paper at school, without which it is impossible to enter a university. When entering a higher educational institution, the final exam scores are also important, so students try to pass the exam for the highest scores. The USE in English 2018 is not mandatory, but applicants who intend to enter a specialized university will have to take this exam.

In terms of complexity and structure, the USE in English is similar to the international FCE test, for the successful passing of which it is necessary to speak the language at an Upper-Intermediate level.

For Russian-speaking students, this is a rather high bar, so it is better to start preparing for the upcoming final exam in advance - from grade 9.10. In this case, in 2-3 years, the student, slowly from the elementary level, will be able to fully acquire knowledge and develop skills for successfully passing the exam in English.

Of course, you can prepare for this exam faster, but for this, the student must have a sufficiently high level of foreign language proficiency, at least an intermediate one.

To prepare for the successful passing of the exam, it is necessary not only to know the subject well, but also to understand how the examination work is arranged.

What elements does the USE 2018 in English consist of? The examination test consists of several parts: written and oral. The first part is mandatory, and the second part is optional, they are rented on different days.

The written part, in turn, consists of five sections:

  • listening;
  • reading;
  • vocabulary and grammar;
  • letter.

For each section, the student can receive a maximum of 20 points. The graduate is allocated 180 minutes to complete 40 tasks. Having passed the first part of the exam with excellent marks, a student can score 80 points out of 100. To get the maximum number of points, you will have to come again and pass the oral part. It contains only 4 tasks, for which only 15 minutes are allotted. For the oral part, you can get a maximum of 20 points.

So, for the USE in English, a graduate can score the maximum number of points - 100, which practically guarantees him admission to a specialized university. However, in order to pass the exam for 5, it is enough to score 84 points. And in order for the test to be counted, it must be passed for 3, that is, at least score 22 points.

As a rule, test results are published on the official website of the exam two weeks after the oral part. You can find out your result on the official resource ege.edu.ru by filling in the appropriate fields with your data. Having successfully passed the exam, the graduate receives an electronic certificate and is entered in a special register. Paper certificates have not been issued since 2014.

How to pass the exam in English 2018?

To understand how the final exam in English is arranged, we will consider in detail an example of such a test. And at the end of each section, we give useful tips from tutors who specialize in preparing students for the exam.

Auditing principles

This section is divided into three parts and takes 30 minutes to complete. These are exercises 1 to 9 from a total list of 40 tasks. The student will hear an audio recording of three fragments, which will be played by the examiners and not stopped for 30 minutes. There are pauses between fragments of the record so that the student can read the task and transfer the answers to the form. For each correct answer, the graduate will receive 1 point.

  1. 7 statements are given. Then the student will have to listen to 6 statements and correlate them with statements, one of which is superfluous. You can get 6 b.
  2. 7 statements are given. The student listens to the dialogue and determines which statements correspond to the dialogue (True), which are not true (False), and which are not mentioned in it (Not Stated). The maximum you can get is 7 b.
  3. There are 7 questions with 3 possible answers. The student needs to listen to the audio recording and choose the correct answer. Exercise for 7 b.

In total, you can score a maximum of 20 points for listening.

Tutor Tips:

  1. When preparing for testing, it is listening in this format that allows you to get used to quickly understanding the task and searching for key phrases in speech that will indicate the correct answer.
  2. When choosing an answer, rely on the meaning of the speaker's words, since in his speech he can mention key phrases for the entire task, but if you understand the meaning of what was said, then you will get only one correct answer.

Principles for passing reading

This section also consists of three parts and 9 tasks, and half an hour is also given for their completion, that is, about 10 minutes for each part.

  1. Given 7 short texts and 8 headings. The student must read the texts and choose the appropriate headings for them, leaving an extra heading. You can dial 7 b.
  2. Given a text with 6 gaps. Below are 7 passages, 6 of which the graduate needs to insert into the text instead of gaps. For the task - 6 p.
  3. A short text and 7 questions are given. For each question, there are 4 possible answers, from which you need to choose 1 correct one. It is possible to get 7 b.

In total, you can score a maximum of 20 points for reading.

Tutor Tips:

  1. When completing the first task, you need to look for key phrases that will help you find the meaning of the entire text and point to the correct heading. As a rule, the main meaning is contained in the first sentence, so carefully study the beginning of the paragraph to find the right answer.
  2. To successfully complete the second task, you need to have a good understanding of how sentences are built in English. Omissions are often found in complex and complex sentences. Remember that in the clause who is used for people, which for things, and where for places. Also remember that the infinitive serves to express purpose.
  3. The questions in the third task are arranged in accordance with the position of the answers in the text, that is, at the beginning of the text you need to look for the answer to the first question, a little further - to the second, etc.

Principles of delivery of vocabulary and grammar

This section is designed to test the vocabulary of schoolchildren, as well as how graduates have learned grammatical constructions in English. The student has to complete three tasks in 40 minutes.

  1. Given a text with 7 words missing. To the right of the text there are words that need to be grammatically transformed (for example, put the verb in the past tense) and inserted in place of the gap. Task for 7 b.
  2. Given a text with 6 gaps. On the right there are words that need to be transformed not only grammatically, but also lexically, that is, to form a single-root word that fits the meaning of the text and insert it into the gap. You can dial 6 b.
  3. Given a text with 7 gaps and 7 blocks of words with answer options. For each pass, the student must choose 1 correct option out of 4 proposed. It is possible to get 7 b.

Total for vocabulary and grammar, you can score a maximum of 20 points.

Tutor Tips:

  1. If in the first task you were given a verb, then you must put it in the correct tense or use it in the correct form of voice (active or passive), or form a participle from it. The adjective, often, needs to be put in a superlative or comparative degree, and the numeral should be converted, as a rule, into ordinal.
  2. In the second task, most often, it is necessary to transform single-root words by adding prefixes and suffixes to them, including negative ones.
  3. In the third task, usually, you need to show knowledge of word compatibility - collocations. You will have to choose from 4 words similar in meaning, in order to choose the correct answer, you must carefully read the text.

Letter Delivery Principles

There are only two tasks in this section (write a letter and an essay), for which the student is given 80 minutes.

  1. The text of a small letter from a friend asking questions is given. The graduate must read the message and write a letter to a friend in response, answering questions and asking them. Volume: 100-140 words. You can get 6 b.
  2. A controversial statement is given. The student needs to write an essay-reasoning on the topic, express his opinion, and give the opposite point of view, as well as explain his disagreement with it. Volume: 200−250 words. For this task - 14 b.

In total, a maximum of 20 points can be scored for written work.

How to write a letter to a friend in English:

  1. A letter to a loved one is written in an informal style.
  2. Hat design. In the upper right corner you need to write the address: first the city, then the country of residence. But it is better not to indicate the street name and house number, because even if the address does not exist, it can be interpreted as the disclosure of classified information.
  3. In the same corner, below the address, skipping one line, write the date.
  4. Then an informal appeal to the addressee is written on the left: Dear Nil / Joe (name will be indicated in the task). Note that Hello is not allowed in this case. Don't forget to put a comma after the call. Continuation of the letter - from a new line.
  5. Each paragraph, according to the rules, begins with a red line. It is worth starting a letter with an expression of gratitude to a friend for the message received (Thanks a lot for your last letter). It will not be superfluous to apologize for the long answer (Sorry I haven't been in touch for so long). It would be a good move if you mention some information from the received message.
  6. Then the main part is written (second and third paragraphs). In the second part, you need to answer the questions received in the letter, and in the third part, you need to ask questions to a friend.
  7. The fourth paragraph is final, it is necessary to notify the addressee about the end of the message (I "ve got to go now!). It would be good form if you offer to keep in touch (Take care and keep in touch!).
  8. At the end, you need to write a standard cliché - Best wishes, All the best (a comma is required), or others. Under this phrase, on the next line, you need to write your name.

How to write an essay on the exam in English:

The essay is also written in a neutral style and contains five paragraphs:

  1. Introduction: the topic-problem is formulated and the existence of two opposing points of view is immediately indicated.
  2. Own opinion: one's own point of view on this issue is expressed and 2-3 arguments are given in its defense.
  3. Contrasting opinions: opposing points of view are described and arguments are given that support them.
  4. Expression of disagreement: you need to explain the reason for disagreeing with opposing opinions, and defend your point of view without using the arguments from the second paragraph.
  5. Conclusion: a conclusion is written on the question posed.

Tutor Tips:

  1. It is strongly recommended not to go beyond the required volume. Only a 10% error is acceptable, that is, for a letter it is permissible to write from 90 to 154 words, and in an essay, from 180 to 275 lexemes. If the student writes at least one word less, then he will not receive a single point for the task. If the volume is exceeded, then the verifier will count the specified limit from the entire text and will evaluate only it, while the examiner removes points for the fact that the work has not been completed, and the topic has not been disclosed or conclusions have not been written.
  2. Do not write paragraphs containing only one sentence. Each thought must be developed and argued. You can use such speech constructions as I believe, In my opinion, etc.
  3. Watch your writing style: never use colloquial expressions like Wish me luck! or Guess what?, and in an essay it is better not to write informal well, cause and slang expressions.
  4. At the same time, the use of linking words in written works is recommended, since they make the text logical, allow you to contrast or two parts of the sentence or supplement one of them.

Principles of delivery of oral speech

This is the shortest part of the exam, which is taken on another day, and lasts only 15 minutes, during which the student must complete four tasks.

A feature of this part of testing is that the graduate performs tasks in front of a computer with a timer on the screen, and all answers are recorded through a microphone. At the same time, the examiner in the audience monitors the progress of testing.

  1. A popular science text appears on the monitor. For 90 seconds, you need to quickly read it to yourself, and in the next 90 seconds you need to read it aloud with expression. Run time - 3 minutes. For the task - 1 p.
  2. An advertisement is displayed on the screen. Based on the keywords, you need to make five direct questions to this text. 90 seconds are allotted for preparation, after which it is necessary to formulate each of the questions within 20 seconds. Run time - 3 minutes. For correct execution - 5 b.
  3. Three photographs are proposed, from which you need to choose one and describe it in accordance with the proposed plan. Run time - 3.5 minutes. You can get - 7 b.
  4. Two pictures are shown, which must be compared, describing the differences and similarities, explaining the choice. Run time - 3.5 minutes. It is possible to dial - 7 b.

The maximum score for the oral part is 20 points.

Tutor Tips:

  1. In order to prepare for the first assignment, it is worth working on texts on various topics, reading them with expression: you must observe all pauses, natural intonation, logical stress. It is also important to keep within the allotted time, but you should not rush too much.
  2. For the successful completion of the second part of the oral exam, it is necessary to practice the ability to ask questions to a variety of texts. When composing questions, do not forget to use auxiliary verbs and put them in the correct form, agreeing with the noun.
  3. In 2018, at the Unified State Examination, in the third task, you will be asked to describe a photo to a friend. Therefore, when composing the text, you need to use the appeal. At the beginning of the description, you need to indicate which photo you chose (I "ve chosen photo number ...). It is also important to answer ALL the questions asked in the assignment, indicate where and when. Do not forget about the introductory phrase (I" d like to show you a picture from my photo album./Would you like to have a look at my picture?) and the final cliché (I hope you liked my picture./That"s all for now.).
  4. When completing the fourth task, the emphasis should be on comparing images, and not on their descriptive characteristics. When comparing pictures, one should use such common clichés as In comparison to the first picture, this one… The first picture depicts… whereas/while the second picture depicts…, The main difference is that… etc.

Draughts (or ‘checkers’ as the Americans call it) is one of the most popular games around the world. The rules are simple. Even young children have no problem working out how to play. The top players study moves in the same way chess players do but anyone can pick it up and have a go. Getting to a high standard takes a lot of hard work and practice but the basics are not particularly difficult.

He was known as a player who was strong in defense and very few players got the better of him. In fact, his defensive play was so good that he was known as 'Iron Tigran'. When he did lose, it was big news in Moscow chess circles.

It seems that there have been some big changes in the British playground. Twenty years ago, traditional games were played in every school across the country during the break. These days, they are quickly being replaced by hand-held games consoles and other electronic games. Before long, there is a danger that traditional games could die out. Once they are forgotten, it may be impossible to bring these enjoyable pastimes back to the playground.

Although I left university with a good degree, I suddenly found that it was actually quite hard to find a job. After being unemployed for a few months, I realized I had to take the first thing that came along or I’d be in serious financial difficulties. And so, for six very long months, I became a market research telephone interviewer.

I knew it wasn't the best company in the world when they told me that I'd have to undergo three days of training before starting work, and that I wouldn't get paid for any of it. Still, I knew that the hourly rate when I actually did start full time would be good. So, I thought of the money I’d earn and put up with three days of unpaid training. Whatever those three days taught me, I wasn't prepared for the way I would be treated by the supervisors.

It was worse than being at school. There were about twenty interviewers like myself, each sitting in a small, dark booth with an ancient computer and a dirty telephone. The booths were around the walls of the fifth floor of a concrete office block, and the supervisors sat in the middle of the room, listening to all of our telephone interviews. We weren't allowed to talk to each other, and if we took more than about two seconds from ending one phone call and starting another, they would shout at us to hurry up and get on with our jobs. We even had to ask permission to go to the toilet. I was amazed how slowly the day went.

It wouldn't have been so bad if what we were doing had been useful. But it wasn't. Most of our interviews were for a major telecommunications company. We’d have to ring up businesses and ask them things like, ‘Is your telecoms budget more than three million pounds a year?’ The chances are we’d get the reply, ‘Oh, I don’t think so. I'll ask my husband. This is a corner shop. We've only got one phone.' And so the day went on.

The most frightening aspect of the job was that I was actually quite good at it. ‘Oh no!’ I thought. ‘Maybe I’m destined to be a market researcher for the rest of my life.’ My boss certainly seemed to think so. One day - during a break, of course - she ordered me into her office. ‘Simon,’ she said, ‘I’m promoting you. From tomorrow, you're off telecoms and onto credit card complaints. I'm sure you can handle it. There's no extra pay, but it is a very responsible position.'

Three weeks later I quit. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made.
