How to choose a room for a nursery

Having chosen the Scandinavian style for the nursery, it is necessary first of all to solve the problem of space and light - to allocate the most spacious room for the child with a large window, remove the partitions. If necessary, you can demolish the wall between the two cramped rooms, for which you will need to obtain permission from the BTI. Then you can start repairing.

Ceiling finish

The low ceiling in a Scandinavian-style nursery should be whitewashed or covered with light-colored paint - pale blue, light pink, beige, depending on the color of the wall coverings.

A win-win option is a snow-white ceiling that visually increases the height and expands the space.

  • You can use stretch or suspended covers without decorative elements.
  • In an apartment with high ceilings, it is possible to mount a wooden ceiling structure with wide beams, on which you can place the main and additional light sources.
  • The wooden ceiling of golden brown color, covered with a colorless varnish, looks impressive.
  • In Northern Europe, bleached lath wood flooring is often used.

Advice: you should not create a multi-tiered ceiling of a complex configuration that is popular today in the nursery, as this is contrary to style.

Flooring in a Scandinavian nursery

A Scandinavian-style children's room looks especially attractive if wood flooring is used in the design, which are different:

  • long service life (up to 30 years);
  • excellent appearance;
  • moisture resistance;
  • high wear resistance;
  • environmental friendliness;
  • high resistance to abrasion;
  • low thermal conductivity.

Parquet and solid boards are expensive, but compared to cheaper floor coverings, they are significantly superior in quality and durability.

As a floor covering, you can use a laminate imitating wood species. Benefits of laminate flooring include:

  • strength;
  • thermal insulation;
  • ease of installation;
  • wear resistance;
  • abrasion resistance;
  • fire resistance;
  • service life of more than 10 years.

A children's room in any country is always a zone of increased activity, which often leads to damage to everything that is in it.

Class 22–23 laminate can withstand heavy mechanical stress, it will not leave traces of paint or compote, greasy stains if they are immediately removed with detergents or solvents, dents from furniture, scratches from pet claws. It is advisable to choose moisture-resistant varieties, since most of the samples on the market do not have this quality.

It is not worth saving on the coating, as the cheapest types of laminate wear out quickly.

Floor colors

Having decided on the type of coating, you need to choose the right color for it.

  • For a nursery, it is advisable to choose a wood finish in light colors - beige or cream.

In the Scandinavian interior, whitewashed board is often used.

  • In a room with a wooden ceiling, golden brown and walnut flooring looks spectacular.
  • It is not customary to cover the floor with carpets, but for convenience, you can cover part of the room with a neutral-colored carpet.

How to decorate walls

The walls in the nursery in the Scandinavian style can be pasted over, painted or pasted over with plain white, light pink, light gray, pale blue, beige, light green, golden yellow shades.

You can designate zones by painting the walls in different colors, finish individual fragments with clapboard, imitate brickwork.

The combination of light gray and white wall coverings, in which white prevails, looks spectacular. Subsequently, the children themselves will place accents, decorating the room with bright drawings, stickers, flags, posters.

Children's furniture in Scandinavian style

In a Scandinavian-style nursery, compact functional furniture is welcome:

  • low tables;
  • stools;
  • chairs;
  • wardrobes;
  • cabinets for bed linen;
  • baskets for toys;
  • bookshelves.

For sleep, you can choose a comfortable loft bed with a ladder. The bed is located on the top of the structure and is equipped with a safety bar so that the child does not fall. In the lower part, you can equip a play area, a workplace or a relaxation area by placing a comfortable chair and baskets with toys or an armchair with a floor lamp there.

If the nursery is designed for two or three inhabitants, a bunk bed and a loft bed will be appropriate, which do not take up much space.

Lighting

Due to the lack of sun and prolonged heavy rains, the inhabitants of the Scandinavian countries are especially reverent about bright natural light. The window opening in the nursery in the Scandinavian style should be as large as possible without details blocking the light. If double-glazed windows are used, a frame with good thermal insulation should be chosen, which is very important for a nursery. The color can be white, brownish or beige to emphasize the contrast with the walls.

In Northern Europe, window openings are often not decorated with curtains. But if a room with a window without curtains seems uncomfortable, you can use light translucent curtains, tulle or blinds.

Cold Scandinavian motifs in the interior attract people. At the end of 2016, the Scandinavian interior was recognized as optimal for any premises.

Previously, Scandinavian motifs were present in bedrooms and living rooms. Now a comfortable and modern Scandinavian-style nursery is one of the best solutions.

We prepare the surface of the walls, floor and ceiling

When finishing a room, it is better to use natural wood. If the budget is modest, you can use laminate.

The product is not absolutely natural, but it is as identical as possible to wood. The color scheme should be light, in some cases white.

In any interior, special attention is paid to the ceiling. It must be perfectly level. Ceiling structures can be painted or whitewashed.

At the same time, the color palette should be light, and stucco and other decorative elements are not needed.

As you can see in the photo of a Scandinavian-style nursery, the floor and ceiling surfaces are the main accents of the Scandinavian style. On the surface of the walls, flights of fancy are allowed.

In classic versions, the walls are painted with white paints or lined with a light wagon board.

Rarely are rooms for children made classic. Therefore, it is quite appropriate to use non-woven wallpaper, made in several color palettes, while the integration of interior spots is acceptable.

Most often, the main surface of the walls is pasted over with wallpaper made in light colors, and the rest of the surface is decorated with bright wallpaper or decorative panels.

Scandinavian-style children's room is often decorated with chalk wallpaper. Chalk drawings can be applied to the surface of such a solution.

If desired, they can be easily removed. As a result, the child will have an additional exciting activity.

Furniture solutions

Children's furniture in the Scandinavian style is simple, concise and comfortable.

Among the themed furniture there are steel beds with rubber components, drawers, tables, cabinets, as well as pouffes or armchairs.

Scandinavian motifs imply space and freedom, so things are stored in an open style.

Among the standard furniture solutions for such premises there are vintage, somewhat antique items.

Geometric shapes and simplicity prevail. External simplicity, hides modern style and versatility.

We select textile solutions

You can hang classic white curtains, but children do not like monotonous and boring colors. Therefore, when choosing textiles, many details must be taken into account.

If there is enough free space, the interior of a Scandinavian-style nursery provides for a small tent or wigwam. In addition, you can use bright carpets.

Decorative solutions

The Scandinavian nursery is filled with bright decorations. Mainly, toys that reflect the inner style of the owner of the room should stand out.

For example, a Scandinavian-style nursery for a boy should be decorated with his favorite cars, steam locomotives and soft toys.

You can use all sorts of decorations in the style of emulators of trophies of fishing, hunting and other activities for real men.

A Scandinavian-style nursery for a girl is favorably decorated with stickers, bright garlands, fashionable doll houses and themed decorations.

We select lighting items

Scandinavian rooms are very bright. They are dominated by white paint and large windows. Additional lighting items are simple.

Often, sconces, lamp emulators, and lamps are installed in Scandinavian nurseries. The main thing is to adapt the lighting to the interior in the Scandinavian style.

Scandinavian nurseries optimize the process of sleep and leisure for the child. Design and interior solutions are simple, but modern and multifunctional.

One of the important advantages of such premises is the formation of a child's own taste. In addition, the baby will feel a craving and love for art, which will favorably affect his further development.

Modernity, relevance, simplicity and efficiency of Scandinavian motifs in the interior make such solutions the best for both kids and growing children.

Photo of a nursery in Scandinavian style

In Sweden, Denmark, Norway, where cloudy days often replace sunny days, natural light is highly valued. In addition, apartments there often have a small area. Therefore, it is not surprising that it was in these countries that the lightest, most democratic interior style was born. Its distinguishing feature is the white walls. They can be interspersed with bright colors, but the white palette is still dominant.

Such a solution may not seem quite practical for a child's bedroom. But there are several ways to solve this problem. The baby's room should be a place where he can realize his artistic ideas. Therefore, it is necessary to provide a place for creativity. This can be a slate board, an easel, or a film for drawing with chalk, with which a part of the wall is decorated.

Of all the decor styles, Scandinavian is one of the most sustainable. Natural materials are used not only for decoration, but also for furniture. This is an extremely important point when creating a child's bedroom. The furniture should be minimalistic, not limiting the space of the room.

Designing a Scandinavian-style nursery is a good choice for several reasons. Firstly, it easily adapts to the age category. As the baby grows older, it will be enough to replace only some pieces of furniture and decor. Secondly, it is universal and suitable for both large and small quadratures. In the latter case, the light shades that are typical for this direction will come in handy.

In the bedroom for a boy, a tandem of white can be blue, black, yellow. An additional color variety will be provided by toys and textiles. The bedroom for the girl has more delicate shades. Pink, salad, turquoise are acceptable here. Let's look at the most interesting options for decorating a nursery in a Scandinavian style.

To get an authentic design for a Scandinavian-style nursery, you need to familiarize yourself with the main characteristic features of this trend. These include the following:

Plenty of natural light;

The light palette is diluted with a few bright accents;

natural finish;

Simple and functional furniture.

As you can see, there are very few requirements. Based on them, you can embody your own unique ideas. It will not be superfluous to fantasize about the original arrangement of the playing area.

A fashionable solution that will surely delight the child will be wigwam equipment. You can purchase a ready-made design, or make it yourself. Do not forget about a warm carpet on the floor, preferably in dark colors. It is better to give preference to models with a short pile. They are more practical to clean.

The character of a Scandinavian style room largely depends on textiles. Darker shades are selected for the boy's room. A blue rug, a brown plaid, blue-and-white striped curtains or drapes. Prints with animals or favorite cartoon characters can also be used.

A lighter color scheme is selected for the girl's room. Although, of course, everything is individual and, first of all, it is necessary to focus on the preferences of the child.

The furniture is also involved in creating the mood of the room. Plain, compact pieces of furniture will fit well into the design of a Scandinavian-style nursery. They can be decorated with your own hands using technology, which will bring a touch of uniqueness and comfort. It can be very small prints on a chest of drawers, a wardrobe or a bedside table.

As the baby grows older, the zoning of space changes. There are more functional areas. It is very convenient to equip children's furniture that "grows" with the child. Later it can be transformed to be used for other purposes. For example, a bunk bed can turn into a cozy playhouse.

If you need to create a comfortable space for two children on a small square, ready-made furniture sets in the smart style will come to the rescue. They are mobile, easily transformed, use every centimeter of usable area.

Not a single interior of a children's bedroom can do without a competent light scenario. In addition to the main light source, it is necessary to provide an additional one for each zone. A sconce of an original form, a laconic table lamp, a night light in the form of a balloon or a garland.

The finishing touch can be an original decor element that meets the interests of the child. Globe, world map, aircraft model, interior letters, jewelry box, felt panel, huge soft toy. Consult on this matter with the owner of the room, he will certainly have many ideas and wishes.

Renovation of a nursery in a Scandinavian style

The preliminary design of the project will help to realize the successful design of the nursery in the Scandinavian style. Also, before starting the repair, it is necessary to draw up a detailed scheme. It includes the following items:

Design project (if necessary, you can add the service of architectural supervision);

Payment for the repair team;

Tools (if repairs are done on their own);

Purchase of draft and finishing materials, their delivery and unloading;

Lighting;

Furniture and decor;

Construction debris removal;

Additional expenses.

The ceiling can be stretched or painted with white paint. In fact, it is only a background for pendant lamps, which can have a monochrome palette or vice versa - a bright body / lampshade. In addition, the ceiling can be strewn with phosphor stars with the moon in the center. A very original night light that the baby will definitely like.

The walls lined with clapboard look very cozy. Boards can be whitewashed or have a natural wood color. Most often, this wall decoration is combined with other materials. For example, with decorative plaster or wallpaper.

If white is chosen as the dominant color, one of the walls (most often the one near the bed) is made accent. It can be painted with dark gray, brown or mustard paint. Applications look very impressive on plain walls. These can be images of your favorite heroes from fairy tales or an abstraction.

Wood plank flooring is the perfect solution. The surface can be bleached, with an antique effect. If this option does not fit into the budget, you can use a laminate with imitation of light wood. It is also suitable for installing underfloor heating systems.

Wallpaper in the children's room is a fairly popular solution. This is due to the wide choice of types of this material, as well as the richness of textures and colors. Before choosing a print, you need to decide for what period of time the repair is being done. If there is no desire to return to this topic in a few years, you need to choose materials that are easy to clean. A good choice would be liquid wallpaper. If necessary, they can be easily restored.

Wallpaper for a Scandinavian-style nursery should not have large colorful patterns. Let's say a small, unobtrusive print on a light background. When choosing a pattern, also consider the age of the child. It is advisable to choose a universal image that will not lose its relevance over the years.

Textiles play an important role in the formation of any interior. Curtains, pillows, blankets should have a single color concept, then the room will look organic. The choice of fabric and color largely depends on the square. Ideally, Scandinavian-style curtains for a nursery should be light in color and let in natural light easily. Roman blinds or a combination of blinds and curtains work well.

On a more spacious quadrature, a dark palette is also acceptable, which will effectively contrast with the snow-white walls. For example, coffee or black curtains combined with cream curtains. The window opening can also be decorated with garlands or paper crafts.

Children's furniture in the Scandinavian style is simplicity, convenience, practicality. The priority is natural materials and light colors. In such an interior, of course, models from IKEA will fit well. However, the modern market is quite wide and allows you to find the ideal option with the necessary functionality for any project.

A bed in a Scandinavian-style nursery can be made of wood. This is the most common option when choosing a cradle for a baby. In the boy's room, you can choose a model with a headboard made of metal tubes. It will look good in a monochrome interior. A combination of a black case and snow-white bed linen will be successful. In tandem with them, choose a black and white striped carpet and Roman blinds with a geometric print.

In the bedroom for a girl, a wooden bed painted in dusty blue will look good. Models with a canopy made of light flying fabrics are also acceptable. If there are two children, you can not do without a bunk bed. An interesting option would be a design with a mobile lower part.

Cabinets can be replaced with wooden chests with forged elements. You can also arrange a niche for storing toys under the windowsill. All kinds of pouffes and banquettes with a convertible top are also suitable. There is no place for bulky massive furniture in such an interior, which means that cabinets, if possible, should be built-in. An alternative could be low white chests of drawers that visually merge with the wall decoration.

You have probably seen photo examples of Scandinavian nurseries, and noticed that they are very cute. And if you still don’t know what a Scandinavian-style nursery might look like, then read this article to the end and you will find a lot of photo ideas.

The Scandinavian interior in children's rooms can be quite versatile, and "grow" with the child. The main thing is to make a base. And then you can supplement it with decor, toys, and it is easy to change this content depending on the interests and preferences of the child. And it will not be very difficult to make the interior of a room for children of different sexes. Undoubtedly, it is very convenient.

What is the difference between a Scandinavian-style nursery? Most often, this is a bright room. Sometimes the walls can be dark. Bright accents can also be used. But in general, laconic colors are used in the interior. The nursery is not cluttered with furniture, but it has everything you need. Of course, in a room with a large area, you can place everything that you and your child would like, and at the same time there will be no feeling that the room is filled with furniture and toys. The space of small rooms is more difficult to organize, but it is also possible. The main thing is to think over the storage system correctly.

By the way, what's easy about furnishing a Scandinavian children's room is that most of the furniture can be bought at IKEA. Since this Swedish company is focused on Scandinavian-style home design.

Materials for a Scandinavian-style nursery

As in any, in the interior of a children's room it is better to give preference to natural materials.

On the floor is a board, parquet or solid wood. By the way, the board can be painted white. This solution is often found in Scandinavian homes. As a more budget option, you can choose a laminate. And it is worth noting that the laminate with a chamfer will look more profitable in the interior. Due to the chamfer, it will look like real wooden boards.

The walls of the nursery can be pasted over. And pay attention to paper wallpaper. This is one of the most environmentally friendly coatings. In addition, paper wallpapers can be bought inexpensively. There is a truth and a minus of such a decision - they cannot be washed. If this is important to you, then take a closer look at the colors. Today the market offers a lot of washable paints. In addition, painting does not mean that the walls can only be made plain. With the help of stencils, you can apply various patterns on the walls. And for a Scandinavian-style room, this is quite simple to do, because very often geometric patterns are chosen. And contain a small amount of flowers.
There are also decorative wall stickers, which, by the way, can be found on AliExpress.

In addition to wallpaper and painting, you can use wood, for example, sheathe part of the walls with clapboard. You can even sheathe half of the wall with wood. And the rest of the wallpaper paste over or paint.

As a wall covering in the nursery, you can use slate covers, on which you can draw with crayons, as well as chalk-based paints and markers, which are erased with an ordinary damp sponge. This will give your child space to be creative. There is also a huge plus of this coverage - the drawings can be updated periodically.

Colors in Scandinavian children's rooms

For those who are worried that a Scandinavian-style nursery will turn out to be boring and too “monochrome”, let's say that bright colors can be used in a nursery. The children's room is a separate world, and it is not necessary to make it look like the rest of the rooms in your house. But, of course, if you want to keep the same color line for all the rooms of the house, then that's fine. And you will definitely succeed. After all, in this article you will find many interesting solutions.

The colors of the nursery can be both light and dark. Decor items that fill the room can be bright or pastel. It all depends on your preferences and on the preferences of your child.

Furniture in the children's room

Children's beds

The most important thing in the nursery, as, perhaps, in any, is the bed. It is clear that for babies the choice is obvious - this is a crib with sides. You can complement it with a canopy. Very stylish canopies in interesting colors are found in Scandinavian nurseries. Most often they are monochromatic. But a canopy with a small laconic pattern is also suitable. More often these are stars, polka dots, stripes or zigzags.

For older children, you can choose from a cabin bed, a loft bed, a daybed or a classic single bed. Bed house can be supplemented with a canopy. Of the popular and affordable beds, we recommend that you take a closer look at the KURA bed from IKEA. The sleeping place of this bed can be either upstairs or downstairs. You just have to flip it the way you like. But keep in mind that the manufacturer does not recommend using a sleeping place upstairs for children under 6 years old in order to avoid injury when falling. The KYURA bed can be completed with a canopy, which is also available from IKEA. But the choice of colors there is very poor. Also a great way to decorate this type of bed is to decorate it with lanterns or flags.

For two children, you can equip a nursery with a bunk bed. Moreover, the designs of bunk beds are different, both with a classic parallel arrangement, and with a perpendicular arrangement of beds.

In addition to bunk beds for two children, you can choose a pull-out bed. In such a bed, the sleeping places are located, as it were, in two steps. One bed is on the upper level, and the second is pulled out of the bed and is located below the level.

If you want to choose single beds, then there is much more choice here. There are a lot of designs of such beds. The main thing is to choose beds made from natural materials, reliable construction. And what is important, with a good slatted bottom.

Storage furniture

A well-thought-out storage system plays a very important role in a Scandinavian-style nursery. The organization and maintenance of the order of the room will depend on this. Of course, the storage system in the nursery should be comfortable for the child. The dimensions of cabinets and shelving should correspond to the height of the child so that he can use them independently. We would like to note that racks consisting of open square boxes, like the KALLAX system from IKEA, are very popular in Scandinavian children's rooms. If we consider IKEA, then STUVA and TROFAST storage systems are also good options.
In addition to storage cabinets, you can use a variety of baskets and shelves.

Children's tables and chairs

When choosing tables and chairs for a child's room, it is important to remember that they must be a comfortable size for the child. For toddlers, these are cute little chairs and low tables. But for schoolchildren, chairs and tables are already needed higher.
By the way, we recommend to take a closer look at the so-called "growing chair". The height of this chair can be changed depending on the height of the child, which will ensure the correct posture and comfort.

Textiles for children

The colors of textiles for a Scandinavian-style nursery can be very different. They range from monochrome to vibrant solid colors or prints.

Floor mats for children's rooms do not take up a large area. Usually these are small rugs. But large-sized carpets also take place in children's rooms. Their colors can be playful. For example, a rug may have a print of a road or a map of the world. Carpets with animal prints, geometric patterns are also a great option. Look for lint-free coatings. They are easy to clean. What is important in children's rooms. 🙂

Curtains also have a place in the children's room. It can be tulle, grommets or Roman blinds. The colors of the curtains for the nursery can also be with different prints - most often these are stars, polka dots, stripes. But also on the curtains in your nursery, animals, plants, letters of the alphabet and other prints can be depicted. Usually, despite the presence of a print, the curtains do not look "colorful". In the Scandinavian style, everything is very concise and moderate.
The same rules apply to bed linen as to curtains.

Scandinavian style toys

If you look at photos of Scandinavian children's, you will see a lot of toys on them. A Scandinavian-style nursery is a storehouse of interesting and unusual toys. They are very cute. Their distinguishing feature is that they are made from natural materials. Most often made of wood.

The most popular toys include a wooden railway, rocking chairs, balance bikes or bicycles, retro cars and airplanes, toy kitchens and strollers, Tilda dolls, as well as soft fabric toys. A business board (developing board) can also be designed in a Scandinavian style.

wigwams

A Scandinavian-style nursery contains many interesting and cute solutions. A very popular attribute of a Scandinavian nursery is a wigwam tent. With it, you can equip a secluded corner for your baby. Wigwams have gained great popularity in our country, so finding them will not be difficult. In addition, their design is quite simple, and you can even make them yourself.

Lighting in a Scandinavian nursery

Good and proper lighting in the nursery is very important. The overhead light should be bright enough so that the child can feel comfortable while playing, reading or creative activities. But in addition to overhead lighting, it is necessary to provide additional light sources, such as table lamps, floor lamps, and so on. This is necessary to be able to create a more relaxed environment before going to bed. And also for enhanced lighting of some specific places. For example, a desk. And by the way, for evening calm lighting, a garland is suitable, which can be hung on a wall or a loft bed. In addition, if your baby does not like to sleep in complete darkness, you can get a night light.

You can choose completely different chandeliers for a Scandinavian-style nursery. It does not have to be a "children's" chandelier. It can be a straw, classic carob chandelier with shades or "candles", a chandelier with a fabric or metal shade, or even a loft chandelier without shades, such as a spider chandelier. You can also use spotlights.

As a table lamp, you can choose any lamp in the Scandinavian style. Of the "children's" table lamps, it can be noted that Miffy rabbit lamps are popular. By the way, a replica of this lamp can be found on AliExpress at a lower price. And besides the rabbit, you can find other little animals.

Also from nightlights, LED wooden nightlights can be noted.

Children's decor in Scandinavian style

The main decor items in the children's room are pictures, flags, garlands.

Garlands are most often used plain with large lamps. They give a special coziness to the room. So consider hanging a garland in your baby's room.

Flags are very common in Scandinavian nurseries. They can be completely different colors. The main thing is that the colors of the flags are in harmony with the rest of the colors of the children's room. Flags will give a little festive atmosphere. After all, usually this element of decor is used to decorate rooms for birthdays, New Year and other holidays. It is very convenient that the flags can be made with your own hands from paper or fabric. This will allow you to choose exactly the colors that you have in mind.

Which pictures to take depends, of course, on the interests of your child. They can feature favorite cartoon characters or cute little animals. It could be a family photo. And also a Scandinavian-style nursery can be decorated with a picture drawn by oneself. You can choose pictures in the general color scheme of the room. But if your little one wants to hang a picture on the wall that you think doesn't go well with the colors and style of the room, don't resist. It's his room after all. The main thing is that he is surrounded by his favorite things that bring him joy.

Summing up, we want to say that the children's room plays a very important role for the child. And above all, he should like it. And our task is to implement all the ideas for the main room of the child in such a way that he is comfortable there. We hope that we have inspired you to create the very children's room that you and your baby dream of. And we believe that a Scandinavian-style nursery is an opportunity to instill good taste in your child from childhood.

Curtains in the Scandinavian style create an atmosphere of comfort without overloading the interior with unnecessary details. Window textiles only frame windows and do not have a blackout effect. This is practical in the conditions of the northern climate of the Scandinavian countries, where additional lighting of the living space is required. Curtains on the windows can also be completely absent, which is quite in the spirit of Swedish design.

Features of the choice of curtains

For a Scandinavian interior, you need to choose curtains:

  • simple and concise forms;
  • calm colors;
  • made from natural fabrics.

What types of curtains are better to use in the interior?

In Scandinavian interiors, you can use both long flowing curtains and tulle, and short louvered curtains. The main requirement for the textile design of window openings is restraint, simplicity and ease of use.

curtains

Long draped curtains, usually translucent, do not prevent direct sunlight from entering the living space. Often they are used without tulle, which creates a feeling of unity with nature outside the window.

Curtains (tulle)

Curtains, or sheer tulle, are also found in Scandinavian interiors. They transmit light well and decorate the window.

Roman blinds are used as an independent element for window decoration, and as an addition to long curtains.

Blinds

Blinds in Swedish design are quite common, as they have a laconic look and maintain the aesthetics of minimalism in the interior.

Roller blinds also support the Scandinavian direction and are quite practical to use.

What material to choose for curtains?

Natural fabrics are used as material for curtains. It is practical, aesthetic and concise, which is the most consistent with the Swedish approach to interior design. The following materials are used in tailoring curtains:

  • Linen is a natural fabric woven from plant fibers and has a characteristic structure. Linen curtains are translucent, hygroscopic and durable. The fabric wrinkles easily, does not always drape perfectly, and this just characterizes the Scandinavian style, far from deliberateness and pomposity. When determining the length of the curtains, it must be taken into account that pure linen is prone to shrinkage, but if there is a small amount of viscose in the composition, then the fabric becomes more static. Flax has natural colors, or is dyed in light shades.
  • Cotton is a natural fabric of plant origin, quite dense and elastic. Its structure depends on the method of production, the thickness and configuration of the threads. The material is well dyed, which means it is ideal for colored curtains. They wrinkle slightly, drape easily, and do not interfere with the penetration of the sun's rays into the room.
  • Chintz is a thin cotton fabric obtained by tightly weaving threads, due to which it becomes elastic and static. This allows you to use chintz for sewing roller blinds and Roman blinds. Thin, translucent chintz curtains also fit perfectly into the Scandinavian style, they create a cozy atmosphere and are unpretentious in use. They can be both plain and colored.
  • Muslin is a natural fabric woven from cotton, silk or wool. The properties of the material depend on the composition. So, the cotton component gives strength and uniformity of the structure, the silk component makes the fabric smooth, thin and elastic, and the wool gives structure and looseness. Muslin curtains have a soft texture, excellent drape and unique tactile properties.

Types of cut Scandinavian curtains

Textiles for windows provide a simple cut and discreet design, but the use of accent details is allowed. For example, curtains can be sewn with hinges, with piping sewn on top or bottom, or you can add vertical strips of fabric. A variety of frills and lambrequins are not welcome, but laconic tiebacks can be used.

Photo ideas in the interior of the rooms

There are many options for window design, depending on the purpose of the room.

Kitchen

Scandinavian-style kitchen curtains maximize the view outside the window and let light into the room. This creates the necessary comfort for cooking and eating. Curtains can be long if space allows. In small kitchens, practical short, roller or Roman blinds are used.

Living room or hall

Swedish-style curtains for the living room bring home comfort and set up for a holiday in the family circle.

Bedroom

Curtains for the Scandinavian bedroom create a sense of security from the outside world, but do not overload the room.

Children's room

The world of a children's room should be individual and special. In Swedish design, bright details are not only children's toys, books, decor, but also curtains.

Loggia or balcony

According to the Scandinavians, the curtains on the loggia or balcony should not block the view of the beautiful landscapes outside the window.

The photo shows a loggia with a seating area and stained-glass windows framed by curtains.

Color spectrum

Curtains in the Scandinavian style should either dissolve in the overall color scheme, or create an accent in the interior. If it is a soft, muted color palette, pastel colors, then curtains of the most delicate, light shades will do. If the interior is made up of contrasts, then you can use curtains with a geometric ornament inherent in this particular style, for example, a zigzag, stripe or a repeating pattern.

The most acceptable colors for curtains:

In Scandinavian interiors, the simplest and most concise cornices are used, usually single.

The type of fastening differs:

  • Eaves of round section with fastening on a wall. They are strung with curtains equipped with loops, rings or eyelets. Such holders for curtains are convenient in everyday life and act as a decorative element in the design of windows in the Scandinavian style.
  • Flat ceiling cornices, which are as invisible as possible in the interior. At the same time, special braid and hooks are used to hang curtains. Such cornices can be hidden in a specially arranged niche under the ceiling, which allows you to achieve the effect of "floating" curtains.
