Do-it-yourself stucco ceiling decor ideas. Ceiling decoration (41 photos): design options in the attic, in a frame house and a city apartment, decor elements

When building houses, beams are often provided to support building structures. It can be floors made of wooden beams, concrete or metal profiles. As a rule, they become an accent in the interior and favorably emphasize the interior.

To create the atmosphere of a country house in a city apartment, decorative beams are used, decorated in the general style of housing.

In the photo, wooden beams were used as decor.

Ceiling fillets

To mask the joint between the ceiling and the wall, special fillets or baguettes are used, which are made of gypsum, wood, aluminum or more budget materials, such as: foam, polyurethane, plastic.

The most popular fillets are polyurethane, which have good flexibility and are used, among other things, for curved surfaces. In expensive classic interiors, textured gypsum baguettes are used, which allow you to create a complex design in combination with stucco and moldings.

Stucco decor

A distinctive feature of the classic interior is the use of stucco. Ceiling rosettes, embossed moldings, interweaving of plant patterns create a special architectural composition of the room. Complex volumetric elements are made of plaster, but in more budgetary repairs, polyurethane decor is used.

Decorative stickers or applications

Decorating the ceiling with stickers is an interesting and inexpensive solution to decorating the ceiling. You can use the image of butterflies, stars, angels, clouds, flowers, various patterns. Self-adhesive vinyl stickers are easy to install and easy to remove.

In the photo, the ceiling is decorated with stickers depicting butterflies.

For decor, there are also mirror stickers. An interesting option is phosphorus figurines of various shapes, glowing in the dark, which is suitable for a children's interior. Corner floral patterns are often placed. Thanks to a wide range of products, you can decorate any room.

Ceiling moldings in the interior

Decorating the ceiling with special profile strips, or moldings, refers to both classical and modern styles. Such elements favorably emphasize the geometry of the room.

  • Light foam moldings are suitable for rectilinear decor, while polyurethane can bend and are suitable for curved surfaces.
  • Gypsum overlays are used for more complex profiles, but are less budgetary.
  • Wooden moldings with carved patterns are used in interiors with a traditional setting.

Moldings can emphasize the arrangement of furniture and lighting in a room.

Ceiling decoration with decorative cord

You can decorate the junction of different materials, drywall levels or the junction of the ceiling with the wall with a special decorative rope, rope or cord. This will eliminate the need to use borders and edgings as decoration. This method will allow you to close any uneven seam and create an interesting design.

Additionally, you can lay an LED strip along with the cord.

Decorating the ceiling with a stencil

An interesting pattern, stylized, for example, as a classic stucco molding, can be done using a stencil and paint.

Drapery fabrics

You can decorate the ceiling with draperies made of fabrics. The upholstery of the entire room with many folds will create a unique atmosphere of comfort in the room.

frescoes

Painting on fresh plaster that dries to a durable surface is called a fresco. This design of the ceiling covering will set the atmosphere of the entire interior.

Non-standard ceiling decoration elements

Finishing, at first glance, in an unusual way will give free rein to imagination and the ability to create an individual design.

For decor, you can use:

  • Tree branches.
  • Communications, pipes, wires, hoods (most often used to decorate a loft-style ceiling).
  • Clock.

Professional tips and ideas from interior designers:

  1. For low ceilings, it is desirable to use light shades and reflective surfaces. This will expand and visually elevate the space. White glossy coatings are the best in this case.
  2. Not only small spaces, but also large enough rooms require special attention. To create a functional space in such a room, it is necessary to allocate zones and arrange them correctly with various lighting options. In a large room, a bright or dark ceiling covering with various decorative elements will look great.
  3. It must be remembered that the space for children should be outstanding. It develops the imagination and creativity of the child. Ceiling decor with patterns, fairy-tale characters, clouds, pictures of the cosmos, unusual lamps will teach a child to explore the world around him from early childhood.

The ceiling covering, designed in the general style of the living space, completes the overall picture of the repair and allows you to implement any ideas of the designer.

An important place in creating a holistic image of the room is the ceiling. However, many doubt whether decorations are appropriate there and, if so, which ones.

General principles of decoration

At first glance, it may seem that decorating the ceiling is not difficult, but it is not.

If you don't want to spoil the thoughtful design of the room, you will have to think carefully about decorating. There are several principles that guide designers:

Otherwise, you are free to act at your own discretion: just do not forget to take into account our advice. Then the room will look really impressive!

What can be used?

There are many ways to beautifully decorate the ceiling. Some types of ceiling coverings are so beautiful that they can be considered decorative elements in themselves - for example, a stretch fabric or solid wood.

However, even they can be made even more beautiful by applying one of the following techniques:

ceiling tiles, painted or voluminous, suitable for simple plasterboard ceilings. If you arrange them in a checkerboard pattern or make a couple of accents, for example, on a chandelier or in the corners of a room, they will serve as a worthy decoration.

An ideal option for a classic interior is stucco molding. Made from quality materials, it will serve you for many years. True, such decor is not suitable for all rooms - it will not look quite appropriate in a high-tech interior.

Fabric draperies rarely seen on the ceiling. We consider this an unfortunate omission that needs to be corrected!

Styrofoam and drywall love for the ability to take almost any shape and color. Why not use this in your room decor?

Doubt your artistic talents? Try to apply special stencils. It is enough to choose the right paint and the ceiling will be decorated with beautiful patterns or paintings.

The traditional way to decorate the floor is fresco. Yes, it can not be called cheap pleasure. However, beauty and durability redeem the high price. In addition, frescoes are back in fashion - maybe try it?

It cannot be called decor - it is an independent element of the interior. But for combined coatings, such an insert will serve as an additional decoration.

Use if you are not sure about the constancy of your tastes (you can read more about them here). Variety of patterns and sizes, ease of sticking and removal… The perfect decor!

Images printed on PVC materials are also popular. Choose a picture that matches the style of the room and see how the ceiling changes!

There are also more traditional decorations: skirting boards, baguettes, and even may well be decorative elements if decorated accordingly. Even lighting can become a beautiful accent - just choose an original chandelier of an unusual shape.

As you can see, decorative ceiling trim includes many concepts - from simple stickers that can be bought at any store to complex custom designs.

Examples in the interior

If you still have not answered for yourself the question of how you want to decorate the ceiling - this is not a problem! We have compiled for you an extensive photo selection with various types of jewelry. Some of it is sure to please you.

One of the cheapest methods is to use paper as decoration. If you're good at making peonies or other flowers, use brightly colored wrapping paper (make sure the color matches the interior!) and hang the finished pompoms from the ceiling with thin string.

If you are using floral paper, it is best to hang the finished product away from the chandelier - when heated, it may begin to melt.

Another beautiful option is paper figurines. Arm yourself with a stencil, scissors and patience - it is not always possible to achieve an ideal result the first time. Such lace decorations will suit almost any room - from the bedroom and nursery to the kitchen. Perhaps, they should be avoided only in the bathroom - there they will quickly get wet and lose their attractiveness.

A spectacular and original way of decorating is Chinese paper lanterns. Yes, they are not in harmony with every interior. However, in a bedroom or living room in a minimalist or Asian style, such decor is very appropriate.

As you can see, even from improvised materials that are in every home, you can create something unusual, turning the room into a real design masterpiece.

A popular way to decorate the ceiling is molding, otherwise called a ceiling plinth. Simple plain or multi-color panels, carved or imitating stucco - the variety allows you to choose something for every taste.

The classic option is to finish the ceiling around the perimeter. Here it is better to choose a beautiful openwork molding that goes well with pastel colors and a classic design. If using it as a baseboard seems boring to you, try adding an inner square. True, this technique is not suitable for small rooms - it visually compresses the room a little.

Modern masters are able to create real masterpieces from it - look at the openwork carving in this photo. Would you agree that it is a worthy decoration for the ceiling of a Victorian-style hall or office?

By the way, these are not always just panels. You can also order a curly molding that will emphasize the beauty of the designer chandelier and fit perfectly into the classic interior.

A more complex option is installation on the entire ceiling area, which will create the effect of embossed patterns on the coating and add volume. Pretty but a bit tricky to implement: if you want this type of décor to look nice, it's best to leave it to the professionals. The slightest unevenness or distortion can completely kill the whole effect.

Previously, draping with fabric was used only in restaurants or concert halls. It's time to move away from this outdated principle! A beautiful and unusual reception will decorate any room, from the bedroom to the living room.

In this case, you need to take care of fire safety: fabrics are flammable, so make sure the wires are well insulated. And choose LED economical light sources, avoiding incandescent lamps. They heat the fabric less, thus preventing fire or melting (this is only true for synthetics).

Modern stucco is most often made of drywall or polyurethane. The second option is cheaper, but we insist on the first: it is much more environmentally friendly. In addition, gypsum is easy to paint in any color, and it takes shape with almost no restrictions.

Stucco molding is well suited to rooms decorated in a classic style. Make sure that the design is done carefully: negligence will immediately catch your eye, as this type of decor is quite pretentious.

A ready-made solution for those who like to constantly bring novelty to the interior - vinyl stickers. You can choose a beautiful twisted pattern for the living room, bright cartoon characters for the nursery, or a romantic landscape for the bedroom.

Their main advantage is the ability to quickly replace the picture if you are tired of it. True, they require an extremely smooth surface - a stretch fabric is best suited.

Do you want to decorate the ceiling with beams? It can be one crossbar for zoning space (try for country style) or. The last type of design is rapidly becoming fashionable again - it is convenient, reliable and very beautiful. True, it can not be called cheap.

By the way, containers for communications and pipes can also be decorated under beams - a great way to hide not very pretty designs.

Suspended structures on the plasterboard ceiling can be safely taken out as a separate type of decoration: they can take any shape, look very nice in almost any interior and look original.

Try to move away from the geometric shapes familiar to many in favor of butterflies, flowers, clouds.

Using a fresco as a decor will cost a considerable amount, but you are guaranteed an impressive result. Of course, not everyone can realize such an idea with their own hands. However, many companies are engaged in such work and are ready to realize your idea.

Frescoes are suitable for the interior of any purpose: from the living room to the kitchen. However, remember that they need an appropriate frame: classic, Victorian, Baroque. At the same time, you do not need to overload the room with other decor - otherwise the beauty of the canvas will simply be lost.

A properly made fresco can withstand temperature changes well, so don't worry about the paint fading over time.

Another way to decorate the ceiling in an unusual way is to use hidden lighting. This method is best suited for multi-level structures: multi-colored LED strips look very impressive.

Choose one or two colors, make sure the backlight is laid out correctly and enjoy the resulting effect.

Want to create a floating effect for your one-level ceiling? Choose a stretch fabric that is not too dense in texture, place the backlight around the entire perimeter and you're done. Or install powerful LED strips that will create the impression of refracted light on the surface - an original, but very peculiar technique that not everyone will like.

Using stencils, you can easily apply a pattern to the ceiling yourself: the main thing is to choose a picture that your household will like and fit into the interior.

It is better to use gypsum boards as a canvas - they can be painted before installation, which greatly simplifies the process. Still, admit that not everyone will be able to drive with a brush or wield a spray can while balancing on a stepladder.

Choose paints with a dense texture that do not deform from moisture or heat - this is especially true for decorating the ceiling in the bathroom or in the kitchen. And do not be afraid if you draw poorly - the stencil will turn anyone into a professional painter.

We hope we managed to convince you that everyone can decorate the ceiling with an unusual decor - just show a little imagination!

Painting on the ceiling can be decorated

When it is not possible to finish the ceiling with expensive modern materials, you can dream up a little, peep interesting ideas in magazines or the Internet and transform it with your own hands.

Ceiling decoration is a creative activity that can captivate and even become an interesting hobby. And most often it does not require large investments or the possession of complex construction tools.

Traditional ways to decorate the ceiling

First, we describe the long-known and widely used methods.

Decorative plaster

Creating a beautiful surface with decorative plaster is a rather difficult task, even when working with walls. Therefore, it is usually trusted to specialists.

There are two types of decorative plaster:

  • Structural- the finished mass, as a rule, is white, which can be tinted in the desired shade. It is applied to the surface in an even layer, after which a relief is formed with the help of special spatulas, rollers and combs. Such work really requires professionalism and skill.

  • Textured- differs in that the relief on the surface of such plaster is formed by itself, without subsequent intervention. After drying, the surface can be painted (see.

If you decide to decorate the ceiling with your own hands using decorative plaster, then choose a textured material. Different relief and pattern can be obtained by using mixtures with fillers of different fractions.

The plastered plane will have a seamless surface, and small irregularities will be masked by the relief.

See what plastered ceilings might look like:

Advice. For finishing, choose decorative water-based plaster - it does not emit harmful substances. You can paint the ceiling with dispersion paint.

Imitation of stucco

In the event that the interior of the room is made in a classic, antique or Gothic style, it is possible to decorate the ceiling with stucco. But not plaster, but lighter and easier to install - polyurethane.

These decorative elements have many advantages:

  • Light weight;
  • Strength and durability;
  • moisture resistance;
  • The ability to bend, repeating the shape of curvilinear structures;
  • They can be painted, and unpainted elements do not turn yellow over time;
  • Magnificent decorative properties;
  • Variety of choices.

The most popular type of polyurethane stucco is moldings, which decorate the joints with the wall. Smooth moldings without a relief pattern are used as decorations in a classic style, modern and provence, and even in a super modern high-tech style.

No less popular are the sockets that decorate the attachment points for pendant lamps and chandeliers.

Among the ceiling decors, you can also find borders, cornices, various flower arrangements, ornamental elements of various shapes, sizes and styles. Combining them, it turns out to create a very original and unique decor.

Polyurethane stucco is glued to a special glue or liquid nails. The process itself does not take much time and effort.

Advice. Polyurethane products are quite expensive, so stucco molding can be made independently from alabaster diluted with water with the addition of PVA glue. The finished mixture is poured into molds, and after hardening, the irregularities are removed and polished.

Figured ceilings

Figured and created using drywall. Making them is a topic for a separate discussion and a task for those who are not afraid of large-scale solutions. But, in principle, many will be able to create such decorations for the ceiling with their own hands.

Original ideas for decorating

Instead of traditional methods, modern ones can be adopted. Or use your own abilities and skills.

Wall mural

Pasting ceilings with wallpaper is a standard technique for decorating them. If such a decoration on the ceiling seems boring to you, stick photo wallpapers on it.

Modern photo wallpapers are distinguished by a clear image, excellent quality, unpretentious installation and a variety of topics. You can buy ready-made photo wallpapers, order them printed on canvas of any texture by choosing a picture from the catalog, or make your own sketch.

Air-themed wallpapers look best on the ceiling:

But the choice of theme depends on the style and purpose of the room. For example, in a nursery, it can be an image of a cartoon character beloved by a child, in a living room, abstraction or 3D graphics are fashionable today, and many other options.

For example:

Thanks to a special laminated coating, photo wallpapers are easy to stick, do not fade and retain their original appearance for a long time.

Ceiling painting

If you do not have artistic abilities, this is not a reason to abandon this idea:

  • Decoration on the ceiling can be done using a stencil. The stencil itself can be bought at an art store or you can make it yourself by printing the drawing you like on a printer and carefully cutting it out. It is glued to the surface with masking tape, and the paint is applied with a roller, sponge or a special stencil brush with short bristles. In this case, paint should be applied from the edges to the center by trimming.

Advice. If you decide to decorate the ceiling with an ornament of repeating details, stock up on a few stencils, as they quickly become unusable and begin to stain the surface.

  • If your dream is a cloudy sky on the ceiling, then you can also “write” it yourself. To do this, after leveling with a brush or sprayer, blue is applied in a continuous layer. A day later, the ceiling is painted again and again left to dry completely. After that, clouds are drawn in a clear sky with white paint. It is best to do this with a natural sponge with the same facing movements.

Application

If you do not know how to decorate the ceiling, pay attention to this option. For application, you can use ready-made vinyl stickers. With their help, it is easy to mask stains or cracks on the ceiling without resorting to large-scale repairs.

Such material is good in that they are easily removed and re-glued to another place without leaving marks on the surface. Application materials can be plain paper or cardboard, polystyrene foam and even pieces of drywall.

This idea will be especially relevant if you decide how to decorate the ceiling in the nursery. For example, around the lamp, you can stick strips of foam, painted in bright yellow and imitating the sun's rays.

But for any other room in the house, you can apply this decoration option. The main thing is your desire to show your creative abilities.

Conclusion

Also on our resource you can learn about. And in the video in this article you will find a few more ideas for decorating the ceiling.

Ceilings are unfairly deprived of all sorts of decorations. And absolutely in vain! After all, your guests do not look up until they notice something unusual. It is worth diversifying the monotonous whiteness with at least some decor and it will instantly attract attention.

But the ceiling is a blank canvas for your creativity, and in this case, it's not even a metaphor. A vast white space left to the imagination. How many opportunities - and how little attention.

So, you were touched by the unenviable situation in which ceilings often find themselves and you firmly decided to correct this omission. Then we will tell you what interesting things can be used to decorate ceilings.

In general, the methods of decorating the ceiling can be divided into four large groups, although it is also impossible to say that they do not penetrate each other.

Major ceiling decor

Overhaul ceiling decor is a decor that requires either a major overhaul or planning at the construction stage. In view of these features, it is not so often used, and is more common in country houses.

However, it is its rarity that will make the interior of your home truly unique.

The capital decor of the ceiling includes the following options:

  • Vaulted Ceilings - Flowing arches are reminiscent of graceful Gothic architecture and can make your interior unique and unlike anything else. However, such changes, if your house is already built, will require a lot of effort, time or redevelopment.
  • This also includes stylization under the arches of the cave, which require either raising the floor level of the second floor, which is not very advisable, or by layering decorative elements over the finished surface. As is clear, if the ceilings are initially low, it is difficult to arrange such a thing.
  • Multi-tiered ceilings - the technology of such decoration is based on drywall, fixed on lightweight structures.
  • Suspended ceilings - installation of various panels that are attached in a similar multi-tiered way. This, for example, includes mirrored ceilings, although the reflective effect can be realized in other ways.
  • False ceilings - in many ways similar to suspended ceilings, but in this case, the supporting structures are not suspended, but are attached directly to the ceiling itself.

vaulted ceilings

The creation of arches requires either planning at the construction stage - and it is desirable that the house be brick - or the presence of initially high ceilings so that structures imitating vaults can be layered from below.

As you understand, the matter is costly and complicated, because in addition to decorative delights, you also need to take care of both light and electrical wiring to it.

Another decor option close to arched ceilings is stylized as a cave. It is rare to find it anywhere, since, firstly, it is difficult to perform - it requires both the creation of a vault and the layering of materials that imitate the structure of a stone. And secondly, there is a very limited number of interiors in which such natural outlines will successfully fit. But if you are an adherent of biodesign, then do not be afraid of complexity - the result is worth it.

By the way! It is not necessary to limit yourself only to arches or to imitate the ceiling under the cave vaults. You can create any relief you want. Wrong faceted shapes? Or soft overflows?

But the best part is that all this can be achieved not only by changing the very structure of the ceiling, but also due to a layer of plaster, gypsum or suspended structures.

Suspended and suspended ceilings

Hemmed and suspended ceilings are created thanks to guide rails, which are either attached to special suspensions, or “sewn” directly to the ceiling.

This method is especially good because it makes it easy to hide wires and communications under the rails, and hollow spaces provide additional opportunities for insulation. And the mobility of structures allows not only to change the level of the ceiling, but also to decorate it in a variety of ways:

  • Multi-level ceilings

Different levels are provided by adjusting the height of the rails. Usually, drywall is chosen as a facing option for such a frame.

Such ceilings can create both angular relief and smooth overflows, which is well suited to modern interior styles. But this does not mean that multi-level ceilings have no place in the classics - with the right choice of color, they will fit perfectly even in the most strict and old-fashioned styles.

Another advantage of such ceilings is the ability to divide the space of the room with the help of them, additionally designate different levels with color and, most importantly, play with lighting.

  • Panel suspended ceilings

In this case, panels are attached to the rails. This method is often used in offices, and therefore it is associated with cheapness, but it can also be used in residential buildings with due efficiency. But it is extremely important to choose the right color for the panels, as well as the platbands of the guides (which in this case will be visible).

A good way out can be the use of panels stylized as a tree and the same trim - this will create an association with the ceiling beams. The diagonal arrangement of the guides, the installation of mirror panels and the patterned alternation of different colors may also be successful.

These are the two main types of decor that are implemented using a light frame. But in fact, this method is much wider - even the arches mentioned above can be easily created by attaching metal structures of the appropriate shape to the ceiling. Therefore, it is difficult to clearly divide this method into groups - it all depends on your imagination! And from the original height of the ceilings, of course.

Beam structures

If you prefer country style and natural materials, then installing heavy beams under the ceiling will create the feeling of a solidly knocked down log house - even if we are talking about a city apartment. To install such a pleasure, you will have to make a few extra holes in the walls, but what can you not do for the sake of beauty?

What to do if the house is a country house, the beams in it are provided for by the design and you don’t like them? There are many ways to fix this: from mounting stretch ceilings, to a variety of decor like wallpaper or stencil drawings.

These are the most common methods of capital decoration of ceilings. They are time-consuming, but they can both transform your home or a separate room, and set the stage for easier ways to decorate - like wallpaper or appliqués.

Lightweight ceiling decor

It is not at all necessary to resort to such drastic methods as redevelopment and perforator to make your ceiling unusual and interesting - and cosmetic repairs will provide enough opportunities to turn around. Lightweight decor will only require you to dismantle the lighting sources and the ceiling plinth (fillet).

These types of decor include:

  • Stretch ceilings - a special fabric stretched over the ceiling. They are durable. Moisture resistant, allow the application of a variety of patterns, and are also textured: under fabric or suede.
  • Adhesive ceilings are lightweight sheets that are glued to the surface. The advantages of this type are the ability to create a relief and ease of installation, and the disadvantages are poor moisture resistance and general low cost of appearance.
  • Roll wallpaper finishing - these wallpapers are denser than wall wallpapers and, as a rule, have a certain relief. Their undoubted advantage is the ability to create a single surface with the walls: both in texture and in color.
  • Decorative plaster - can press a certain texture to the ceiling or create a stylization of a stone surface, oil strokes, or even bring out an interesting pattern.

Adhesive ceilings

As a rule, these are square panels that are simply glued to the ceiling. They are made from lightweight materials, the names of which will take up about a quarter of this article, so just trust me: they are really very light, which allows them to stay strong at the top.

Such panels can have a pattern, a certain texture and even a relief. All this, given the ease of installation and low cost, favorably distinguishes adhesive ceilings from other types of decor.

However, they also have disadvantages:

  • depending on the material, they may be afraid of direct sunlight or water
  • since it is a tile, you will not get a single ceiling structure - the connecting segments will be visible
  • many options look frankly cheap, so you have to work hard with the choice

Ceiling wallpaper decoration

The name speaks for itself - this is pasting the ceiling with special wallpaper. They are somewhat different from wall-mounted ones: they are denser and thicker, often have a relief. If you want a ceiling that isn't perfectly smooth, but you don't like glued panel segments, then this wallpaper is for you.

Another argument in favor of ceiling wallpapers: nothing prevents you from customizing them with the image you want.

In addition, ceiling wallpapers allow you to create a uniform surface with the walls. Choose the same pattern for the ceiling and walls - thus you will achieve the effect of solidity and completeness of the room.

But avoid dark tones, they visually lower the level of the ceiling, and the room will appear lower and cramped.

Decorative plaster

How is it different from the usual one? First of all, the texture and, of course, the purpose: its task is far from utilitarian.

There are many types of decorative plasters, but the essence is the same - granules in the adhesive. The texture depends on their size and shape. So, fine-grained plaster will look almost flat on the surface, while coarse-grained plaster will create relief and grooves.

If the granules are round, then the surface will come out rough, while the oval ones will leave furrows behind them. Capsules of paint create streaks that mimic marble veins. Or do you want pearlescent highlights? There are plasters with small acrylic particles that will create just such an effect.

Decorative plasters allow you to play not only with color and imitation, but also with texture. The effect of sea shells can be achieved if the mass is applied with a spatula in a circular motion. Or create a braided braid pattern. Or maybe even bring out strange and chaotic intertwining patterns? The choice is yours.

Of course, all this can be attributed to the walls, but you must admit that the ceiling, stylized as a sea beach, is truly spectacular.

These are the main ways to decorate the ceiling, which will not require you to make any major changes in the layout or install additional structures. Despite the fact that they are easier to implement than "capital" friends, they provide no less opportunities.

Light ceiling decor

Do you want to diversify the appearance of your ceiling, but are you not ready for drastic measures like a major overhaul, installation of structures or wallpapering?

You can be understood. However, in nature, there are many ways to decorate the ceiling, which do not involve serious interference with the appearance of your apartment. It is them that we will analyze today: you will not be required to dismantle any elements of the ceiling, and many can be made by hand.

  • stucco and imitation of stucco
  • hanging decorations - it can be artificial flowers, a lot of decorative lamps, garlands. The complexity of mounting what can be hung on the ceiling varies greatly: from ordinary gluing to the need to hang a special hook
  • stickers and applique
  • art painting and stencils

stucco work

In view of the fact that any type of stucco is attached either to special adhesives and / or screws, you will not need any additional devices for its installation. It is classified according to what material it is made of. It could be:

  • plaster molding

The heaviest, most complex in execution and reliable of all possible. It happens both standard and custom-made. It is attached - if the element is light - with glue or with screws if its weight is significant. Its advantages over the rest are reliability, durability, and texture to the touch - but the latter is true for walls. It is unlikely that there will be someone who will often touch your ceiling.

  • Polyurethane molding

Precast moldings in inorganic polyurethane. It is cheaper and much lighter than its "gypsum" counterpart, but on a larger scale it is manufactured according to standard designs. But lightness, durability and moisture resistance make this stucco molding the most preferable for the ceiling.

  • Papier-mâché, foam, cement

These are less popular materials for making stucco. But they also have their own characteristics: it is easy to fill the mold with cement and it comes out cheaper than gypsum; polystyrene is fragile, but inexpensive and light; papier-mâché is often used for independent production of stucco elements.

From a design point of view, classic stucco will not fit into every interior: Romanesque, Baroque, Rococo will take it with a bang, but in more modern designs like modern or minimalism, artsy carving will be extremely inappropriate.

However, it does not have to repeat the complex patterns of classic styles. You can also order angular, futuristic designs that will look unusual and modern.

Suspended structures, which we talked about in the last article, are much better at creating such effects. But if you are not ready for cardinal changes in the apartment, you are a fan of Art Nouveau styles and have firmly decided to decorate the ceiling, then the most daring ideas can be realized with the help of custom-made stucco.

hanging ornaments

It is very difficult to somehow classify everything that can be hung on the ceiling - because such decor, as a rule, is carried out independently and directly depends on the owner's imagination. It can be, for example, flower buds planted on glue - made of paper, plastic or synthetic fabrics.

What about a ceiling decorated with paper cranes? This way of decor will fit perfectly into the interior in the kitsch style, and diversify the Asian motifs to the room.

In cramped spaces, they often resort to installing "blank lamps" - these are ordinary incandescent lamps that are not connected to the network. However, the light from the "main" lamp reflects and glares off the glass of the "fake" lamps.

Despite the breadth of various hanging ceiling decorations, they also have common features that need to be considered:

  • any detail protruding beyond the surface of the ceiling will accumulate a lot of dust;
  • in view of its creativity, a rare hanging decor will fit into a classic design that strictly adheres to certain canons.

You are not a very experienced craftsman, but you want to make a ceiling decor with your own hands? We will try to help you with this. It is no secret that in modern houses and apartments, ceiling decoration is carried out not only for aesthetics, but also in order to expand the space, visually raise the ceiling, close all problematic, ugly places. For example, when an ugly joint between the wall and the ceiling is visible, stucco molding is used.

For decorating, the following stucco details are used:

  • Ceiling plinths (moldings).
  • Rosettes (stucco around the chandelier).

Ceiling decoration elements are made from a variety of materials: gypsum, wood, and foam. They can be very expensive and just expensive, but we will focus on the decor details from such a cheap polymer as foam. Styrofoam is the common name for polyurethane and polystyrene. Decorating the ceiling with foam (polyurethane) is an important completion of your renovation. Wide foam skirting boards visually lift low ceilings.

Do-it-yourself stucco ceiling decor is a great solution. Stucco looks especially beautiful in a room with a high ceiling. But there are samples, and there are many of them, that fit perfectly into modern standard apartments. You can fix ceiling products made of foam, polyurethane foam (a material similar to gypsum) and foamed polystyrene (inexpensive plastic) with glue, silicone sealant, liquid nails or finishing putty. We will also consider such a decoration option as decorating the ceiling with a cloth.

Ceiling plinths are glued after finishing work is completed. They will remarkably hide all the irregularities, traces of glue, defects between the ceiling and walls. Manufacturers make foam plinth from expanded polystyrene - an inexpensive and lightweight polymer. These decorative stucco details are even and convex-relief.

Designers use skirting boards to optically enlarge or reduce a room. For example, if you want to visually enlarge the room, then it is better to choose baguettes to match the color of the wallpaper or walls.

You have two options - choose the ceiling plinths to match the color of the walls or paint them yourself in the desired color. In this case, it is better to take the plinth in the store immediately primed, it will be easier to paint it. If the walls and ceiling are replete with decorative details, bright colors, ornaments, then it is better to use a simple, rather than embossed foam ceiling plinth. Alternatively, a flexible polyurethane skirting board can be used. It is used in the home when they want to give a room or arch an oval or round shape.

What is molding? This is the second name of the ceiling plinth. These are overhead panels of various shapes, which are used to decorate the ceiling, walls, doors and arches. Styrofoam moldings are usually white, as in the photo. Sometimes this stucco is decorated with a small application of gold paint. This element is usually primed during production, so if desired, you can paint it in any desired color. Moldings are usually glued to the junction of the wall and ceiling, but they can be used to divide the surface into zones.

Modern polyurethane stucco is good because it allows you to hide power cords, power cables, wires - everything that spoils the beauty of our repair. Polyurethane is a lightweight and easy-to-install material. It is also inexpensive, which is also important. White cornices are great for a white ceiling and light walls. If you take a dark molding and a plinth for the floor of the same color, you will get a more solid and austere look of the room. Installation of polyurethane moldings (moldings, sockets, baguettes) is quite simple and fast.

For this we need:

  1. Remove the section of the wall and ceiling on which you will attach the stucco from dirt and whitewash.
  2. You can glue the elements to the ceiling with the Moment-Montage adhesive, as well as the Titan or Dragon polymer glue. When using these adhesives, we advise you to apply the adhesive to the polyurethane, press it to the surface and quickly tear it off. It is necessary that the glue dries within 40-45 seconds.
  3. After that, we glue the polyurethane finally.
  4. Liquid nails also give excellent results.
  5. Alternatively, acrylic putty is used. In addition to fixing stucco, small cracks can be covered with white putty.

Polyurethane decorative beams are very similar to natural wood stucco, and working with such beams is easier and faster than with wood. False beams will help visually raise the low ceiling, separate one zone from another.

What are their main advantages:

  1. Beams are not afraid of moisture and retain their shape well.
  2. The fact that they can not be fungus and mold can also serve as a plus.
  3. Beams made of polyurethane are light, they are easier to mount on the ceiling.
  4. The beams are hollow inside - this allows you to remove irregularities and defects in the ceiling with their help.
  5. We hide pipes and electrical wiring in their cavity.
  6. You can install the beams with your own hands, without involving the master.
  7. Polyurethane beams are fireproof, they can be used to illuminate the ceiling.

Decorative polyurethane beams are cozy and stylish.

Rosettes are stucco elements that are attached to the places where chandeliers or lamps are installed. Usually this is the center of the ceiling. As a rule, sockets made of polyurethane have a rounded shape, but not always. Many manufacturers produce stucco moldings in whole collections. Products from one collection look better and more beautiful. Polyurethane sockets are lightweight and do not absorb moisture, they are suitable not only for the room, but also for the bathroom, kitchen, dining room. Borders are separate elements of decor.

Ceiling decor with a cloth can be done in two ways - glue and tablet. In the first version, the fabric is glued to the surface, like ordinary wallpaper. The material should have light colors, it must first be ironed. We glue the fabric joint to joint - according to the principle of gluing wallpaper. We stretch the canvas in full length and press it to the ceiling. In the second version, the fabric is stretched over a wooden frame or professional fasteners made of metal or plastic. You can make a tent, a wave-like surface. Any fabric is suitable, but it is better to use transparent, translucent, and not heavy types of fabrics. An effective way to use textiles in decoration is fabric inserts on the surface of the ceiling. The dimensions of the inserts can be made to your liking, it takes a little material for this part. See photos for decor options.
