What is the fort mentioned in the old expression "walking the fort"? What does it mean to keep your hands firth.

Fert, fertik. The merging of two different words of homonymous composition was reflected in the history of the word in a peculiar way firth.

Primarily firth(or firt) is the name of the 22nd letter of the Old Russian alphabet. This word is noted by Acad. I. I. Sreznevsky already in the ancient Russian monument of the XIV century (Gr. Naz. from the interpretation of Nik. v. Op. 11.2.86–87): voice, put forward fert to rest, but what a fuck (faskapaskha)."

“Drevlezh is indignant at Philip, his son-in-law, as if firt names a letter ( διά το φι γράμμα )" (Georg. Amartol. Uvarovsk. sp., l. 281–282). “Theodora, Theophanes ... these names and similar sims in the beginning firth supply, not fita” (Sreznevsky, 3, p. 1350). In this sense, the word firth used until the beginning of the 18th century. In the XVIII century. the German word fertig was borrowed into the Russian language in the meaning of "ready" and received a substantiated meaning: "smart dandy, dandy (fertik)".

The data extracted from the "Dictionary of the Russian Academy" (1806-1822, part 6, p. 1103) are indicative. Here we find: Fertik, ka, s. m. 2 sk. diminish. common people. means dandy."

« firth, and, p. m. 2 sk. the name of the twenty-third letter in the Slavonic Russian alphabet” (Dictionary of the Slavonic Academy, 1822, part 2, p. 1103). It is curious that already here the folk-etymological rethinking of the word fertig(fertik) as a form of derogatory (i.e., highlighting in its composition a diminutive suffix -ik) cf. table - table; nail - carnation; color - flower; cf. flower etc.). This means that the word fertik enters in the 18th century. into association, i.e., semantic and etymological connection with the word firth– due to their partial homonymy. However, in the very word firth the meaning of the dandy has not yet been noted.

In the dictionary of 1847 (4, p. 386) we find almost the same information: “ Fertik, a, s. m. 1. Mind. the words firth. 2. A dandy who holds himself like an F. He stands fertik» . « firth, a, s. m. the name of the letter, in the Slavic alphabet the twenty-second, and in the Russian twenty-first ”(ibid.).

Here already - without any circumlocution - it is stated that between fertik and firth an internal etymological and derivational connection was established and that fertik taken as a diminutive form of the word firth. However, even here the word firth not defined as a dandy, a dandy.

Otherwise, V. I. Dahl: “ firth m., letter F. Fertik, diminish .: dandy, dandy. Stand fert, back up fert with both hands to the sides. This is me (Napoleon. - V.V.) I’ll go by the lady, fert I will lean on my sides” (words by Dahl, 4, p. 549).

Phraseological illustration fertik("it costs fertik”) leads to an indication of a metaphorical connection with the letter F self-confident, akimbo figure of a dandy "arms to the sides, eyes to the ceilings." This is where the expression " stand a fort» . So it was sung in an old soldier's song:

The king of Germany, the king of wheat,

Chicken look, lingonberry nose,

Arms fert under the barrel

And the soul is all in a patch.

It is curious that in the dictionary of D.N. Ushakov (4, p. 1070) the word fertik perceived only as a diminutive and disparaging form of firth in the meaning of "dandy", common in common parlance. the word is firth defined as follows: 1. The old name for the letter "F". 2. A dandy, a smug, cheeky person (colloquially disdainful.) What is this firth found out?" - Firth stand (watch, look etc.) - akimbo (so that it looks like the letter "f") cheekily, brazenly. Hands on hips, look with enthusiasm, look at the fert - look, yes just spit(Dostoevsky), Craftsman guy - looks like a ferth(Nekrasov)".

(Vinogradov V.V. To the study of questions of homonymy // Slawisch-deutsche Wechselbeziehungen in Sprache, Literatur und Kultur. Berlin, Verlag Academie, 1969, pp. 278–279).

From the book Explanatory Bible. Volume 5 author Lopukhin Alexander

Let's think. The first two options denote people or objects that could actually walk in the literal and figurative sense. So, the first one could be an important rank and walk among the soldiers with his head held high. In the second case, the queen is the most important chess piece that moves in all directions. For some reason, all reflections lead us to the idea that walking a fort means being important.

So where does the letter F in this case, what or who does this figure look like? The letter F looks like a man who put his hands on his hips. And this letter in the old days was called Firth, then all the letters of the alphabet had their own name. So they began to call the person who took such a pose. Over time, the expression to walk a firth or stand a firth came to mean "to put on airs, to be swaggered, to be smug."

So the correct answer to this question is number three: a letter of the alphabet.
