Watches from the record with their own. How to make a clock from a record with your own hands

Many people used to have a gramophone at home, on which they listened to their favorite music. Looking at vinyl records, there is a feeling of nostalgia. Therefore, not everyone can overcome themselves and throw out this relic of the past. It is better to take the opportunity and make a clock from vinyl records with your own hands. This accessory will decorate any room and give the interior originality and elegance. This is especially true for collectors of old and exclusive things.

Making a vinyl clock is not as difficult as it might seem at first. By following simple rules, everyone is able to create an original decor element that fits perfectly into the interior of a kitchen or living room.

Installing the clockwork (MK)

A product with a clockwork - this option is the simplest. The essence of the work is to install the clockwork directly on the plate.

To make a homemade product, you need to go through the following steps:

1. Fix the base of the mechanism on the reverse side of the plate. Better to use glue.

2. The arrows will exit through the hole that is placed in the center of the base. Here you need to make sure that the mechanism is located exactly in the center.

3. It remains only to install the hands and the clock is ready.

4. If desired, the base can be embellished with various patterns or patterns. For lovers of minimalism, this option will be the most suitable.

Clock from a plate of an unusual shape (MK)

Unusual watches - in this case we will talk about creating a product of various shapes. How to make:

1. A pattern is applied to the plate, along the office of which the cut will be carried out in the future. You can use a ready-made stencil. You just need to attach it to the base and outline it.

2. Cutting a vinyl record is carried out with a special drill machine or an ordinary jigsaw. The work must be done very carefully so as not to damage the source material.

3. To give the product a finished look, it is necessary to put a dial on the plate. Numbers are applied to the plate with a simple pencil. With the help of a drill machine, they are cut along the contour. When doing such work, do not rush and put effort on the tool. Work must be carried out on a level and stable place.

watch making process

Do not forget about decorating watches from vinyl records. There are many technologies that will give the product an original appearance. A good solution would be decoupage.

Abstract clock (MK)

Anyone can attach a mechanism to a vinyl record. But to make a truly original product, you need to try a little. A good option would be an abstract clock. To do this, you need to heat the plate in the oven and give it the appropriate shape.

First, the oven is heated to a certain temperature and an old record is placed there. After some time, it is removed and hands give the necessary shape. To give the plate the desired shape, it is necessary to carefully bend it at several points. It should be borne in mind that there should be a place in the center for the unhindered fastening of the mechanism.

It is worth remembering safety precautions. It is better to work in special heat-resistant gloves.

Decoration in the style of decoupage (MK)

Decoupage will be the best option for creating original clocks with which you can decorate your home. Of course, as a result of the work carried out, it will not be visible what material the product is made of. Therefore, it is worth seriously considering whether it is rational to use a sheet of plywood instead of a plate.

To create an original product you will need:

  • acrylic paints;
  • brush;
  • glue for decoupage;
  • special napkins;
  • scissors;
  • clockwork.

Necessary materials

Manufacturing process:

1. Take a disk and cover it with white acrylic paint. This is the base layer for creating decoupage. Paint adheres very well to vinyl. But in order for the coating to turn out to be actually uniform, it is necessary to make several layers.

Paint the plate with white paint

2. Then the plate is covered with a second layer of water-based varnish. To create high-quality decorative cracks, experts recommend using varnish and paint from the same manufacturer. The painted product is left for several hours for the paint to dry.

Apply a second coat and let dry.

3. The use of the craquelure technique involves creating a layer of cracking paint. In this case, it should be borne in mind that the subsequent layer is applied to a slightly dried varnish. If it dries completely, then the creation of elegant cracks will become impossible. The size of the craquelures mainly depends on how much time has passed between processes. The more time passes after varnishing, the less cracks will be obtained. Finished work

Thus, you can create an original clock from a vinyl record with your own hands, which will decorate any interior. In order not to have to blame someone later for an unsatisfactory result, it is necessary to strictly follow the above steps.

Vinyl clock decor (1 video)

1. Find a vinyl record of the right size. We wash the label. It’s better to take the record with a white center (it’s simply unrealistic to kill the red one with white :))

2. We buy a clock mechanism in a craft store, online store or watchmaker.

The standard kit includes:

Clockwork

3 hands (hour, minute, second)

Center nut, washer

Optional wall hanging loop

3. We prime the plate with white primer from a can. I have a primer like this (alkyd, universal):

You can simply paint the plate with white acrylic paint with a sponge, however, with a spray primer, adhesion to the surface will be better and it will be easier to work on. We dry.

4. We make the background of the future watch: mix the paint, apply it to the plate with a sponge. We dry. (I applied a translucent layer of gold acrylic).

5. Cut out the motif from the decoupage card. Glue on PVA:

Smeared the surface of the PVA plate

Wet decoupage card

Put the card on the glue

Top once again well missed PVA

With fingers or a brush, they kicked out all the bubbles from under the card

Dry the surface (you can use a hairdryer)

I used Decomania cards: “Decalcomania “Richelieu” and a decoupage card on rice paper.

How to transfer the napkin to the surface (manufacturer's instructions):

1. In a capacious container filled with water, lower the decal sheet and leave for about 5 minutes.

2. We take out the wet sheet and let the water drain in a vertical position, controlling the process of peeling the pattern from the paper base.

3. Using the sliding method, we put the pattern down on the base and separate, by folding, the top layer of paper.

4. When the drawing is translated, use a spatula (flat spatula) to get rid of air bubbles by running it over the superimposed drawing.

5. Dry with a cloth swab, soaking it with excess water.

6. After drying, varnish.

We stick rice paper on the principle of working with a regular decoupage napkin.

6. Varnish: at least 3 layers. We draw with a contour or glue plastic numbers. (if the clock is large enough, you can buy numbers for the front door at the hardware store)

7. If in the process of work we sealed the hole in the clock with a decoupage card, we carefully cut the hole. Then we insert large scissors into the hole and turn it several times to increase the diameter of the hole (then the clockwork will pass without difficulty).

8. We insert the clockwork, put a flat washer, tightly tighten the nut on top. If your watch mechanism is equipped with a loop, it must be attached to the back of the plate. That is, the order will be as follows (if stacked): mechanism - loop - plate - washer-nut.

If there is no standard loop, you can make an impromptu replacement: glue two loops on the “Moment”, and then tie a rope or wire between them.

If necessary, paint the arrows in a contrasting color with a sponge (so that the arrows do not get lost on the clock). We dress the hands: first the hour, then the minute, we put the second hand on top of the pin. The hour and minute hands must be firmly seated on the stem. You are unlikely to be able to confuse the order, since the holes in the arrows are different in size.

9. Insert the battery. We hang the clock on the wall. Enjoy :)

What I like the most is that the clock can be made very quickly (no more than 4 hours for the whole job if you use a hairdryer), simply and, by the way, from a large number of different materials.

As a basis, you can use old discs, a primed canvas, a thin wooden palette. Clock mechanisms can be bought, or you can simply pull them out of an old wall clock or alarm clock.

Possible options (39 photos)

Vinyl records with your favorite music make you feel a sense of nostalgia, so many do not decide to part with them after a long time. When they lie on a shelf, they collect dust and take up space. There is not much benefit from this, rather a turnaround. If you are not lazy, you can breathe a second life into them. Your work will not be in vain and will please the eye of both you and everyone who comes to your house. This accessory will give your interior originality, which is now so appreciated. If your house is filled with things from the last century, and a hand does not rise to throw them away, then an article on how you can make a clock quickly and easily from a vinyl record will be useful to you.

Making a clock is not so difficult from a vinyl record, as it seems to many at first glance. For those who cannot immediately understand the entire process of making such watches, a video tutorial will not be superfluous, which can be found after reading the article.

We analyze the main methods of making watches from a vinyl record

Installing clockwork with arrows.

The simplest option, in which only the mechanism itself is attached to the surface of the plate. It must be glued on the back. The arrows go to the front side through a hole in the middle. For a more spectacular appearance, you can make a drawing. It can be glued or painted by hand with a brush. But lovers of minimalism will also like the option without drawings.

Simple form.

This method is very similar to the first. The difference is that before attaching the clock mechanism, you need to give your watch a not very complex shape (hare, butterfly, heart, and others). Remember that while cutting out the shape, do not rush, because. vinyl can melt from high temperatures.

Creating a watch face.

For sawing, you will need a drill with a nozzle or, if you do not have one, a manual jigsaw. Before you cut out the dial, you need to draw it with a pencil on the next watch. After finishing work, start cutting along the contour.

If you choose to use this option, don't be discouraged if you don't succeed right away. this is a rather complex process. Be patient and try again and again until you get good at using the tool.

Complicated form.

You can apply a pattern on a vinyl record both independently and using stencils. This method is very complicated and if you do not have the necessary experience with tools, then wait with making watches. Instead, you can practice on plywood or other suitable waste material.

Decoupage.

You can use decoupage to decorate your future watches. But if you want it to be noticeable that this is a vinyl record, then you should not use this method. Under the picture it will not be clear what material the product is made of. To achieve the same effect, you can simply take a sheet of plywood or plastic.

We study one of the options for making a clock from a vinyl record using decoupage technique

To work you need:

  • Brush;
  • Acrylic paints;
  • Vinyl record;
  • Special glue for decoupage;
  • Napkins;
  • Scissors;
  • Directly the clock mechanism and hands.

We take a plate corresponding to the desired size of your watch and apply white acrylic paint to one of the halves. This will be our first layer. The paint lays down quite well, but to create a more even surface, it is better to do two or three layers.

Now it's time to move on to the next layer of the clock. We cover the entire area of the plate with a water-based finishing varnish. To create decorative cracks, it is worth using paint and varnish from the same manufacturer. Set aside work for 2-3 hours so that our products dry a little.

If we want our watches to be made using the craquelure technique, then it is worth covering the layer of varnish with cracking paint. It is worth remembering that the varnish coating should only dry a little. If you allow the glossy varnish to dry completely, and this will happen approximately 24 hours after application, then elegant cracks will not form on the surface. The size of the craquelure directly depends on how much time has passed between applying varnish and cracking paint. The longer the time interval, the smaller the cracks and vice versa. Consider also the fact that if the cracking paint is applied too quickly, it can mix with the varnish, which will not allow you to get the desired effect.

To create cracks on the half of the record that was not painted white, use yellow oil paint. And for the white part - chestnut.

Glue the cut flowers using a thick solution of vinyl glue (in the proportion of glue to water 1 to 3, respectively). To attach it, apply glue with your fingers, as the appliqué is very thin. Pay special attention to attaching the edges.

In the final step, you will need to install the mechanism with arrows using the hole in the center.

So, our watch is ready. This is just an example of making clocks out of vinyl. By connecting your imagination and diligence, you can create countless truly magnificent and original watches.

Entrepreneurial designer Karina Kaluga turns retro Melodiya discs into silent timepieces

Hand-made business attracts start-up entrepreneurs with a low entry threshold and the possibility of self-realization. Far from always, such projects are long-lived, but if the founder believes in himself and correctly "felt" a niche, then his micro-business has every chance to grow into something more serious. Three years ago, Karina Kaluga, a student from Vladivostok, sold her first vinyl record watches through a social network page, and now her products are sold in many outlets and both Vladivostok residents and guests of the city are happy to buy them.

25 years old, entrepreneur from Vladivostok, founder of the project (production of designer watches from old vinyl records). Education: Vladivostok State University of Economics and Service (major in environmental design). The cost of starting a business amounted to 5,000 rubles.

Old records "played" in a new way

Three years ago, student Karina Kaluga worked in the Far East office of Yota, which once sent her on a business trip to St. Petersburg. There, Karina went into the underpass and saw a clock made from vinyl records. There were three hundred rubles in my pocket, and the watch cost five hundred. So Karina decided that it was time to do something of her own and without big investments - for example, such watches.

“I came home with these thoughts. I bought thirty old records at an Internet flea market, made layouts, found a carver. To begin with, we cut out three clocks with different detail on a laser machine - in order to understand how the melted vinyl would behave. All hours turned out, and I posted them in group in the social network "Vkontakte". On the same day, orders from friends and acquaintances rained down on me. I think that the approaching New Year played a big role in this,” says Karina Kaluga.

Then Karina began to look for points of sale - and agreed with several stores to sell her vinyl clocks. Also, at the first stage, it was important that as many people as possible learn about the workshop - Karina talked about her watches on social networks, participated in city events, etc.

Karina Kaluga made her designer chronometers the theme of her graduation project - and it so happened that one of the vinyl watches was bought by a member of the selection committee right at the defense

When many Vladivostok residents began to bring their old vinyl, Karina came up with a system of discounts. For example, for 100 records, a 100% discount was obtained, and surprisingly few people brought a smaller amount. So the apartment and the balcony were filled with the products of the only Soviet record company Melodiya and foreign records - and Karina had to transport everything to the garage to the carvers. This accelerated the speed of making watches and helped bring the apartment back to its former decent appearance.

How does the production of vinyl clocks work?

The two main operations in the process of creating clocks from vinyl records are layout design and laser cutting. The finished layout is loaded into the “brain” of the cutting and engraving machine, then the temperature and speed are set. Next, you need to load a vinyl record and set the reference point from which the laser will start cutting out the pattern. Technically, the whole process takes a few minutes, which allows you to quickly complete orders.

“A laser cutting machine is very expensive, and it is impossible to put it in an apartment. It is quite bulky and requires a special exhaust system. The carvers I work with have it installed in the garage, and in Vladivostok, such equipment can be found at outdoor advertising companies,” says Karina.

When the technical part of the work is over, it remains only to assemble the watch. A silent clock mechanism is inserted into the vinyl record and the hands are selected. The watch is sent in a white box, “like for pizza”, and goes to the customer or to the point of sale.

Now the workshop's clock can be bought at the Kontrabanda vinyl record store, at the Pink Elephant, at the souvenir shop of the old GUM courtyard, and in some other places. The cost of watches from Karina Kaluga is 1500 rubles.

In addition, the workshop works on individual orders - a custom layout is developed for the client on any topic. For example, on the clock you can make a portrait of a person or a congratulatory inscription. Finished watches cost the same 1,500 rubles, plus the creation of an individual design - from 500 rubles. It takes from three to ten days to develop a layout, depending on the complexity.

Now there are about sixty layouts in the catalog of the workshop. There are watches for every taste - for fans of Pink Floyd or Doctor House, in the steampunk style, variations on the theme of the works of Salvador Dali, with the symbols of the Admiral hockey club and in general with the symbols of Vladivostok. Russian emigrants who miss their homeland sometimes even turn to the workshop - not so long ago a man from the USA ordered a watch with Vladivostok.

“People's tastes are quite spontaneous, it is very difficult to guess what will be popular in the next moment. Now on vinyl, musical idols are especially in demand - Vladimir Vysotsky, The Beatles and Pink Floyd. I focus on the tastes of my clients. I see no reason to make clocks with cats, just because I like it,” says Karina.

From the position of a designer, Karina believes that there should be a "golden mean" between the customer's request and her own vision. You need to draw something that people want to see in the layout, but at the same time, so that she likes the work herself.

Now the workshop plans to develop new layouts about Vladivostok, on the themes of the underwater world, as well as a series of watches with major Russian cities.

“In terms of work, I focus on clean silhouette models of the Estonian designer Pavel Sidorenko. It was he who first came up with the idea of making clocks from vinyl records. And that's why in the new series of layouts about Vladivostok I want to remove the detail and make them more stylish.”
