How to remove window tint yourself: with and without heating. We remove the old tint ourselves

Darkening car windows to complete opacity is a favorite entertainment for drivers of the "banana republics". And although our summer is not as sunny as somewhere in Latin America, Russian motorists do not lag behind their counterparts from developing countries. Zero-tinted cars have not lost popularity since the 90s of the last century; and since the removal of numbers for this offense was canceled, it has been observed. However, fans of riding in a dark aquarium will soon face new troubles: . The fine will increase from 500 to 5 thousand rubles, and relapse will be punishable by deprivation of rights for up to six months. There is only one way out: stop playing spies and finally remove the film.

What is possible and what is not?

To understand if your car meets the established technical requirements, you need to familiarize yourself with GOST-5727-88 “Safety glass for land transport". In accordance with the document, the light transmission of the windshield should be at least 75%, and the side windows of the front doors - 70%. Thus, it is impossible to achieve that they are opaque on the outside; the maximum that a driver can afford is a slightly shading athermal film. In addition, there may be a light-shielding strip no more than 15 centimeters wide on the windshield. But the rear hemisphere is allowed to be tinted to full opacity, but on one condition - the presence of side mirrors on both sides of the car.

How to remove tint?

It’s not so difficult to “tint” on your own - for this you need a razor blade (a clerical knife will do), a hard kitchen sponge (but not a metal one), almost any glass cleaner and a little luck. Pressing the edge of the blade at an acute angle to the glass, it is necessary to pry off the film and carefully pull it away with your fingers, trying not to tear it apart. If luck accompanies you, the canvas will come off entirely, and all that remains is to wipe off the glue with a sponge moistened with a cleaning solution.

However, it often happens that the film "grasps" on the glass in different ways: it easily leaves along the edges, but it keeps tightly in the center and breaks when you try to remove it. In this case, you will have to suffer a little: you will need an assistant and a hair dryer (better than a construction one, but a regular hair dryer will do). The assistant should heat the glass with outside- not much, up to about 40 degrees. The main thing here is not to overdo it: otherwise the film may begin to stretch, melt, or the glass itself will burst. While one directs hot air, the second gently removes the softened film. In this case, the remains of the glue must be washed off immediately, since, having dried, it will become cloudy and collect dust.

How to remove the tint from the rear window?

The rear window should be cleaned exclusively with a hair dryer, without resorting to a razor or knife, as they can damage the filaments of the heating system. And then you have to buy new glass - or "repair" the old one with conductive glue (but it will not look very good). Therefore, in no case should you sharply “pull off” the film, just gently pull it. Please also note that it is allowed to heat the glass with a hairdryer at temperatures above 0, otherwise it may crack. So in winter, “tinting” can only be done in a heated garage.

How to remove glue?

The main trouble is the remnants of glue; in general, they are usually easily erased with a sponge with water or soapy water (the glue turns into spools and falls off), but there are times when the film is glued, as they say, in good conscience. And this is just the case when it was not lucky: the fact is that wiping glass with a solvent is quite problematic. Firstly, it will remain in the cabin for a long time bad smell. Secondly, solvent drops will inevitably fall on the skin and rubber seals and ruin them. Therefore, if there is no other way out, at least cover the seats with something and tape the gum at the bottom of the glass with tape. However, if the adhesive isn't quite "brutal", you can try to remove it with rubbing alcohol. Also, you can try special agent for cleaning glass (for example, GT154), sold in car dealerships.

How to replace tint?

Fans of dark film usually give the following arguments in its defense: in the summer the interior is not so hot, and the driver's eyes do not suffer from the sun (and in winter - from shiny snow). The first argument is quite reasonable: plastic can be deformed under the sun's rays. But to avoid this, a light athermal coating is enough, and the glasses of most new cars are made with the addition of iron oxide, which reflects the infrared (thermal) part of the light, that is, they do not need additional protection. As for the second point, it is much more reasonable to buy dark glasses. They will not only cost less than tinting, but, importantly, they can be removed when the sun sets, and “blind” drivers of darkened cars at night have long become a byword.

It's no secret that having tinted windows on your car has become so popular that the tinting service is now considered the most popular in car services throughout the country. But, no matter how hard the experts try, the shelf life of such a fashionable chip is limited, and the time comes when the film has to be removed.

When to remove the old tint

Remove tint for the following reasons:

  • improper use of tinting;
  • unfavorable natural conditions;
  • and, an important fact - the tightening of fines for tinting car windows;
  • you bought a car and you do not like the presence of tinted windows.

And this is where the problems begin: it is difficult to remove the tinted film completely, the resistant glue with which the base is impregnated leaves unpleasant and sticky stains. But there are several ways to clean glass without consequences.

First, let's figure out when you need to remove the old film:

1 – if there are reasons that do not depend on the state of the tinting itself, this is light transmission below 80%, which is prohibited by the traffic regulations;

2- deterioration of tinting– delamination along the edges of the glasses, the appearance of bubbles, glue, scratches and elementary burnout of the coating

If you decide to remove the film yourself, you should be aware that this is a painstaking task and requires free time and strong nerves.

For different car windows, you can use several methods for removing tint. Which one is better to use depends on which glass you are going to remove the film from: front, rear or side. With large-scale glass it is convenient to use soap, in small areas - a hair dryer.

Tinting removal options

In principle, everyone chooses for himself more convenient way removal:

  • detergent (preferably for the front glass) – to do this, you can use a special car shampoo, dishwashing detergent (more expensive brands), or even washing powder. The solution is prepared in relation to 30 ml of the product per 1 liter of water, mixed and poured into the car washer tank or sprayer. After applying the substance directly to the tint, you need to stop the process for 5 minutes, let the film soak. Then use a knife to pry off the edge old film and gently pull towards you in a smooth motion. Repeat the procedure until the glass is clean. ;
  • with a hair dryer in this case, you will need an assistant : one heats the surface, and the other gently removes the film ;
  • with ammonia solution ammonia is applied in a thin layer to the tint, then the glass is closed with polyethylene (for this better fit cling film). In this state, you need to leave the car for several hours so that the chemical reaction takes effect, and only after that the tinting is removed. After that, the remnants of the film and glue are removed with water and soapy water;
  • soapy water - a painstaking, lengthy process, but effective. Wet the entire tinting around the perimeter with prepared water and apply a newspaper to a damp place, do not let it dry for an hour, constantly wetting the glass. After the specified time, gradually remove the tint, rinse the surface again.

Let's take a closer look at the fastest and most best option removal of tint by heating.

To do this, you will need: work gloves, hair dryer, car scraper, and, ideally, a partner. Remember this method can only be used if your car is in a warm room or outside, but in warm weather. If this rule is not observed, then the glass may crack due to a sharp temperature difference.

We take the following steps:

  • Prepare the car for the procedure - remove the seals from the windows.
  • Take a hair dryer - you can use both building and household ones;
  • Start heating the window from top to bottom at a temperature of no more than 40 degrees. This temperature allows you to soften the glue, but if you increase it, there will be an even greater bonding of the surface. Gradually moving from one edge of the glass to the other. Be careful not to damage paintwork car body and interior.
  • Release the glass
  • Gently grasp the edge of the tint and gently and smoothly pull down
  • If the film begins to break, heat the place of separation again until all the tinting is in your hands.
  • wash glass
  • Dry the surface with a hair dryer.

Removing tint from headlights

If you want to remove the tint from the headlights, then for this type of glass it is better to use acetone or gasoline:

  • dampen a cotton pad or cotton pad with
  • distribute it evenly around the perimeter, after that, the tinting should peel off the glass without hindrance;
  • remove tint;
  • wash the headlight with any detergent and dry it.

To avoid damage to the upholstery of the car when using aggressive chemicals, be sure to cover the surrounding surface with rags, otherwise this may lead to metal corrosion or a short circuit of nearby wires.

How to remove tint from heated glass

If you are dismantling the rear window film, do not forget about the heating filaments, in no case scrape the surface with sharp objects, use a soft cloth.

In places where the heating device is held, do not overdo it with a hairdryer, it is better to choose a method without heating the surface. Photo: Drive2.ru

After removing the film, as a rule, there are always stains and sticky adhesive residues. Since synthetic agents are used in tinting, the most effective option their removal is an ordinary warm soapy solution.

Remember, never use different kind cleaners and others chemicals, this can lead to damage to the lamination (scratches and abrasions may appear) of the car glass.

To make glass perfectly clean you need:

  1. Take a rubber scraper and scrape off the remaining glue by scraping, you can also use handy tools - a clerical knife and a blade;
  2. Spray the surface to be cleaned with window cleaner, wipe thoroughly and clean the window again with a sharp instrument.

If after two procedures you are dissatisfied with the result, then do the following:

  1. Prepare a soapy solution, foam the liquid with a dishwashing sponge, and evenly apply to the entire surface of the glass, wait until it dries completely.
  2. Wet the sponge warm water and wipe the window again, washing away stains and glue residue
  3. Wipe the surface dry with a clean cloth and evaluate your work.

You can also use oily products (but only after removing the tint!), Such as acetone, gasoline, kerosene, medical alcohol. Or buy a special spray in the store to remove streaks after removing the tinted film.

You will find another version of the instructions for removing the old tinting in the video:

Outcome

Which way you prefer to remove the tint is up to you, but do not forget the main rule - through trial and error, you can achieve the desired result. In each particular case different method will be optimally useful. If the doubts are so great that you do not dare to get down to business, then trust the professionals.

In connection with changes in traffic rules that limit the permissible light transmission of glass in a car, more and more drivers began to wonder how to remove tinting from glass easily and quickly. And you can do it with three different ways, each of which we will consider in the article below.

Removing tint with a hair dryer

The very first option for self-removal of tinting from glass is considered the fastest and easiest. But for it you will need:

  • A regular hair dryer (you may need a carrier or extension cord to connect the hair dryer, as the base wire will not give you the opportunity to go around the car in a circle);
  • Stationery knife;
  • Rubber spatula (you can use a plastic spatula).

If you have all the necessary items, then you can safely proceed to the removal of tinting. To get started, connect the hair dryer to the mains and place yourself near the glass so that you have access to all its edges (if you do not warm up the far edges of the glass, then a film will remain on them that will need to be torn off again). Next, gradually warm up the glass until the tint begins to wrinkle a little.

Remember that glass, despite its decent thickness, has a fairly low level of strength. Therefore, it is strongly not recommended to overheat it over 40 degrees. Well, when the glass is heated to the above temperature, you can begin to remove the film from it, gently prying it from the edge.

So we learned: how to quickly remove the tint from the car glass with a hair dryer. But, this option has one small drawback: the adhesive from the film will remain on the glass and will have to be removed separately. But this is not a problem at all, since we will also consider options for removing glue from glass in the article below.

Film removal with soap solution

Since far from all drivers have a hairdryer, and it’s not always possible to use it in garage or street conditions, we will consider another option, how to remove it yourself old tint from the glass of a car using a soapy solution. For this you will need:

  • Plain water;
  • Liquid soap, shampoo or ordinary dishwashing detergent;
  • Spray bottle;
  • Stationery knife or blade;
  • A clean rag or napkins (needed to wipe the glass dry at the end of the procedure).

To prepare a soap solution, pour a liter of water into a bottle and add a little soap (on average, one liter of water takes up to 40 ml of soap). Next, screw the lid tightly and shake the bottle well until it becomes solid (when shaking, the soap solution increases significantly in volume. Therefore, it is better to choose a bottle with a slightly larger diameter).

After the solution is ready, change the cap to the sprayer, and use it to moisten the edges of the film. Next, try prying off any of the four edges with a blade or knife. When you succeed, continue to slowly remove the tint from the corner, gradually wetting this area with soapy water (you need to wet the glass from above so that the solution flows under the film).

Of course, it will take you much longer to remove tint from car windows than with a hair dryer. But the end result will be about the same (when using a soapy solution to remove the film on the glass of the car, many times more glue will remain). It means that you have completed the task.

Removing tint with ammonia

Of the possible means than to remove the tint from the glass of a car, ammonia is considered the most time-consuming, both in time and in materials. However, compared to the previous method, it has one significant advantage: you will not need to stand over the machine all the time and spend energy peeling off the old film. After all, ammonia will do all this for you.

Well, you, in turn, will need to create all the conditions for the above reaction. And this is done as follows:

  1. Prepare a soapy solution and apply it to the outer surface of the tinted glass;
  2. On top of the applied solution, using a sprayer, applied thin layer ammonia;
  3. After the aforementioned substances have been applied, the glass on the outside will need to be closed plastic bag(you can use the usual "T-shirt" or garbage bags), and also treat it with ammonia on top;
  4. A package should also be placed on the inner plane of the glass to reduce light transmission (in order for the package to hold well, pre-treat inner surface glass with soapy water).

It should be noted that this procedure must be carried out on the street, under open sun, because without it, ammonia will not react with the film. Well, if everything is done correctly, then the tinting itself will begin to lag behind the glass, and you just have to remove it altogether and clean the surface of the glue.

Removing the adhesive after removing the film

As we already understood, regardless of how to remove the tint from the car (with a hairdryer, soapy water or ammonia), the glue from it will still remain on the glass and will have to be removed separately. And you can do this with the help of the following elements:

  • Water or soap solution. If the tinting on the car is not quite old, then there is a chance that the water will soak the glue and it can easily be removed with a rag or spatula. Well, if the glue sits on the surface very well, then you should not try to remove it with water and a spatula, as you can ruin the glass;
  • General purpose solvent. Unlike water, this substance dissolves dried glue very well. But they must be used with extreme caution. After all, the main constituent element of any solvent, acetone, reacts very aggressively to the glass surface, subjecting it to deformation. Therefore, you need to work with the solvent very quickly, preventing it from being absorbed;
  • Petrol. It is quite possible to remove the glue from the tinting from the glass with gasoline, which every driver always has at hand. But before applying gasoline to glass, it must be mixed with water in advance, since in its pure form it has similar properties to acetone. Well, after the glue is completely removed, it is advisable to thoroughly rinse the surface of the window with plain water so that there are no multi-colored stains on it;
  • Alcohol. Also, like the two substances listed above, alcohol copes with dried glue quite well. But unlike gasoline and solvent, it does not cause any harm to the glass surface, due to which they can safely wipe the window without fear of consequences. The only drawback of such a substance is its high cost;
  • Ammonia. Alcohol analogue, not harmful glass surfaces, but corrosive to varnish and paint. And this means that before applying this substance to the window, all metal element machines should be well protected with ordinary polyethylene or oilcloth. Well, do not forget about your own safety in the face of a respirator and gloves.

In principle, any of the above methods for removing the remaining adhesive can be considered fairly easy. After all, everyone can get gasoline, alcohol or ammonia, and the process of removing glue is not as laborious as removing tinting.

Removing film from heated glass

Many drivers are also wondering how to remove the tint from the rear window without damaging the heating. After all, such an element is quite fragile and it can be disabled very easily. Well, in order for this not to happen, it is enough to follow the following simple rules:

  • To remove the film from the heated rear window, only the soap solution option should be used, as it is considered the safest;
  • During the removal of tinting, the heating must be turned on;
  • When tearing off the film from the surface, it is not necessary to make sudden movements, since this can damage the thin panels of the heating system;
  • If the film, despite all your efforts, still lags behind badly, you are allowed to use a hair dryer. But you can heat the glass no more than 15-20 degrees, and only in the place where the film is removed.

At the same time, you will not have any problems with removing the glue, since it is easily erased with ammonia, which is absolutely harmless to the elements of the heating system. But the removal of the film, even despite the observance of the above rules, may well require the intervention of a specialist.

Recently, in connection with the tightening of punishment for excessive tinting of the car, many drivers are interested in how to remove the tinting from the glass on their own. By and large, self-withdrawal tint film - the procedure is not very complicated and, following our advice, even an inexperienced motorist can do it.

There are several ways to remove tint from car windows yourself. The most common ones are listed below:

  1. Using a steam generator or industrial hair dryer.
  2. "Dry", helping yourself with a blade.
  3. With soapy water and a blade.

We see no point in talking about all these methods of detonation, so we will focus only on the last one, as the most optimal one.

We suggest watching the video at the end of the article, which shows in detail how you can relatively easily remove the old tint from the car glass yourself.

Previously, we published instructions for self-tinting a car, but after the introduction of a ban on tinting the front windows, another question became relevant - how to remove the tinting with your own hands? And so, let's go in order.

How to remove tint yourself without a hair dryer

In order to remove the tint yourself, you will need:

  • water sprayer,
  • a blade from a construction knife or a special scraper with a blade,
  • water,
  • dishwashing liquid,
  • dry wipes.
  1. Mix water in a spray bottle with a small amount of dishwashing detergent (approximately 30 grams per 1 liter of water), thus obtaining a soapy solution.
  2. After that, lower the front glass about half and spray on the transition between top glass and tinted film prepared soapy solution.
  3. Wait one to two minutes, and then with the blade carefully, being careful not to scratch the glass, separate the edge of the tint film from the glass so that it can be grasped by hand.
  4. Do not spare the soap solution, constantly spray it on the glass - it will be easier on your own ().
  5. After the edge of the film has been separated, grasp it with your hands and gently pull it down, trying to remove the entire material with one sheet. The slower you remove the tint, the less glue there will be no glass. Do not forget to periodically spray the soapy solution.
  6. When you reach the bottom of the glass, lift it completely and remove the remaining tint.

As a rule, a high-quality tint film is removed without any special problems. If you have a very old tint or poor-quality Chinese film, then without the help of a hair dryer it is unlikely that you will be able to remove it yourself.

After you completely remove the tint film, you will need to use a blade from a construction knife remove adhesive residue from glass. To do this, the glass must be thoroughly moistened with soapy water. Now the remaining adhesive can be carefully removed. The blade should be held at an angle of 30-40 degrees relative to the glass, the movements should be even from top to bottom or bottom to top, with medium effort, so as not to scratch the glass (see the video below).

And at the end of our “special operation”, the glass must be washed well and wiped dry with a napkin.

That's all, now you know how to remove the tint yourself. Removing tint from two front windows takes on average from 30 to 60 minutes of time (as it goes), but it saves you money on visiting service stations and traffic police fines.

How to remove tint from the front windows of a car

The tint film pasted on the windows of the car is no longer surprising. This is a common tuning element that helps to noticeably transform the “iron horse”, giving it a more serious look. But sometimes circumstances force the driver to remove the tint. In this case, knowledge will come in handy.

This article describes several useful ways which will be useful not only for experienced motorists, but also for beginners. The proposed methods will help you cope with the removal of the tint film on your own.

Why is the driver forced to remove the tint

In most cases, the reason is a fine for violating the rules of tinting. On the windshield it is forbidden to glue any film, except for the top strip. Front side windows are allowed to be pasted over with tinting, which transmits at least 70% of the light. The rear windows are not limited, however, if a mirror film is stuck on them, then it should be removed.

Another common cause is film age. Behind long time operation, the tinting fades or various defects appear on it. Air bubbles and peeling of the film give the car an unpresentable look.

How to remove tint yourself

Tinting can be quickly and efficiently removed in a car service. But if it is not possible to use the services of a specialist, then the film will be able to be removed independently. The process of window tinting for a beginner can take long time. To speed things up, ask someone to help you.

An important step in removing tint is preparation. It is necessary to remove all linings and seals that can be damaged by tools. To remove the old tint film, there are four simple ways:

Easy film tear
You will need:

  • sharp knife;
  • a little patience.

The main advantage of this method is minimum set necessary hand tools. IN upper corner glass, pry off the edge of the tint. Then begin to pull the film towards you and down a little. Tinting must be separated from the glass diagonally. Keep it constantly taut along the entire length of the tear and slowly pull it back. This will take quite a lot of time. But the tearing process can be accelerated. To do this, divide the tinting into strips 15 cm wide. Use the knife carefully so as not to damage the glass.

With a cleaning solution
You will need:

  • water;
  • any detergent;
  • spray;
  • sharp knife.

Prepare a solution, it should include: one liter of water and about thirty milliliters detergent. Pour the solution into a small spray bottle and mix well. Spray the resulting mixture on the top edge of the glass and wait about one minute. During this time, the solution will penetrate between the film and glass, weakening the adhesive base. After waiting, separate the film with a sharp knife on the edge of the glass and begin to gently pull down.

Separating small plot, spray the solution again on the place of separation and wait half a minute. Then continue to separate a small section of the film - and so on to the bottom of the glass. It is important to remember that everything must be done without jerks, distributing efforts evenly.

With heating

You will need:

  • construction or household hair dryer;
  • partner.

The best tool for removing old tint film is any blow dryer. You can use household, but the whole process will take much more time.

Using building hair dryer set the button to minimum temperature, and set the maximum on the home appliance. Again, start at the top edge of the glass. Warm up the glass area as best as possible and pull back the edge of the film. After separating a small piece, warm up the bottom part of the tint again. Thus, it will be easy to remove the entire film from the glass.

It is most convenient to do this procedure with two people. One warms up the film, and the second slowly and constantly pulls it down, tearing it off the glass. It must be remembered that you should not do this in the winter on outdoors. In this case, a crack will appear on the glass from a sharp temperature drop.

Using a special solvent
You will need:

  • solvent can;
  • scraper;
  • dry rag.

Sold in stores special liquid in a can, dissolving tint. It is applied to the film and left for fifteen minutes. After the specified time has elapsed, the dissolved tint will easily separate from the glass surface. It is also used to remove adhesive residue. Liquid easily penetrates under the door skin, leading to metal corrosion or wiring short circuit. To prevent this, place a rag over the door trim.

Features of removing tinting from the rear window

Difficulties in removing the tint from the rear window appear due to electrical threads. They can be easily damaged by tearing off the film in the usual way. To prevent this, you need to be careful in your work. The difficulty is also caused by the inconvenient location of the rear window.

To separate the film, you need to start from the side and along the threads. The pull-off force should be smooth and without jerks. To speed up the peeling of the tint from the glass, use a cleaning solution. After removing the tinting, it remains to remove the remaining adhesive from the glass surface.

How to remove adhesive residue

In most cases, it is enough to use any cleaning agent and a soft scraper to remove adhesive residue. If the glue has been on the glass surface for a sufficiently long time, then it is better to remove it with acetone, gasoline or high-grade alcohol. At the same time, it is necessary to protect the door trim and the car seat from getting these substances on them. Don't forget to use protective equipment for hands and respiratory tract.

This article has reviewed several simple ways. All of them are tested in practice by many motorists. Choose for yourself what suits you best. Be careful while working and then you will succeed.
