But, probably, everyone will agree that viewing captured moments from life is much more pleasant in a photo album. It is not necessary to spend money on purchasing such a photo album, because you can easily make an album for photos with your own hands.

DIY photo albums: what are they?

Classical albums are rightfully considered the most common.

They are:

  • with magnetic sheets;
  • with plastic pockets;
  • with cardboard sheets.

Undoubtedly, photo albums with plastic pockets are the most practical. Required photo it is simply placed inside, while dust does not settle on the pictures, they cannot be dirty. But such photo albums also have a significant disadvantage - you can’t dream up. One photo fits in one pocket.

Another situation when we are talking about a do-it-yourself cardboard photo album. Since all pictures need to be glued, this takes some time. Poor gluing can damage the photo. They are not protected from physical influences. But there are no restrictions on the size of the photo. You can cut them out, place several on one page, do whatever your heart desires.

Magnetic sheets also allow fantasy to roam, but over time, such pages turn yellow and peel off.

DIY photo album covers

There are a lot of varieties and variations of covers for photo albums. Depending on the theme, these can be wedding and gift covers, as well as covers for a children's album.

The most common are paper and fabric. The latter very often have a synthetic winterizer backing. It is used to give softness. Cut out a window in the middle of the cover. The clasp on the album will look very harmonious. You can do this by sewing in a magnet or simply by tying a beautiful ribbon. Alternatively, you can sew on a button or rivet. In general, any trinkets, candy wrappers and little things are suitable for decoration.

Here is only a small part of the options for how you can make a photo album with your own hands. With a little practice and imagination, it will be quite easy for you to design an original children's or family album. The variety of materials with which the cover can be made and decorated will make your creation unique.

gift for New Year do-it-yourself: felting booties, a master class with a photo How to make snowflake earrings from beads: a master class with a photo

You already had to overcome a lot and make a complete album without a cover.

Attaching the cover to the album takes place depending on the chosen method of attaching the entire album (, spring, rings, laces, etc.) and you should already know how you will do it. And I want to discuss the creation of the cover itself.

The album cover is:

1. Fabric

You can cover the binding cardboard with a cloth and we will get a cloth cover. Save beer cardboard for the inside pages, as it is less durable and may break on the cover. Here's what I got.

The corners of the album can be straight, like mine, or rounded:

Tips and comforts when creating your first DIY album (scrapbook)

  • cover with paper decorations you can not flash (like me) or if you have a good sewing machine, it will not work for such purposes 🙁
  • Don't worry, fabric embellishments glued with Moment Crystal or uhu glue won't fall off and stick perfectly.
  • It is better to decorate the cover separately, from the whole album - that is, not yet glued to the main block.
  • Brads perfectly pass through binding and beer cardboard (fabric and synthetic winterizer) and they can be bent from the back of the cover.
  • Volumetric fabric and paper flowers adhere well to the fabric with glue, however, like other decorations

I hope my advice was able to reassure you, giving them based on my experience, what worried me when creating the first scrapbook and what stopped me from making a fabric cover.

2. Paper

I confess that I made my first albums from paper covers, because I was afraid to work with fabric. But note that paper covers are less resistant to time - fray faster, bend corners, etc.

Paper can be glued butt to butt to the cover as here:

In this case, the edges must be treated with white acrylic paint(if you use binding cardboard), and if you use beer cardboard, then they are already white. It is also best to put corners for albums on the cover in order to extend the life of the album.

Tips on how to make a paper cover for an album with your own hands

When I made such a cover, I was interested in: how to make the perfect size for decorative paper on the cover? how to guess, because even a millimeter error will be visible. And everything turned out to be simple. It is necessary to glue the binding cardboard covers with glue, then take a sheet of scrap paper bigger size and paste on top. Carefully cut off the excess edges with a very sharp clerical or craft knife. When gluing, pay attention so that the pattern does not move out or twist.

Another way to cover a scrapbook album is to wrap the scrap paper around the corners. Like here:

Album cover sketches are also used to design the cover. They can be found simply in a search engine or by participating in various tasks from blogs. So you do not forget that I will attach a photo:

Or invent it yourself.

Advice! To make the cover look finished, create a professional layering of paper, from various voluminous decorations. Flat covers look like regular typographic covers and don't look vibrant. Also, don't forget practicality. Too many voluminous decorations will complicate the storage of the album.

I already have a finished wedding album. In the next issue I will show it in all its glory, there will be many photos and even videos 🙂 Don't miss it!! Subscribe to the news of the site, join our group and then you will certainly be aware of the scrapbooking news.

Quote message MK on a soft fabric cover for an album from SapSapochka

In this way, you can make covers for bound albums or for notebooks - it looks aesthetically pleasing, and the cover details are attached to each other quite securely. Perhaps someone has been successfully using this simple method for a long time, but when I got to it, I was indescribably delighted! How, why didn’t I think of doing this before?)) The method is technically simple, but it’s problematic to describe it in words, well, at least for me)) I’ll show you how I made the cover for duck album, there will be a hundred million photos with detailed step by step description. At the same time, I will share a bunch of secrets and little tricks that make the job easier.

1. To get started, we need a finished binding.
It is important! You can start making the cover when the album cover is ready. (or notepad). I use masterfulMK Elena Vinogradova : http://vinograd08.blogspot.ru/2010/06/blog-post_27.html- basic, http://vinograd08.blogspot.ru/2011/03/blog-post_28.html - additionally explanatory, it makes no sense to give here the stages of binding, they are brilliantly described in the author's blog. I do everything exactly according to MK, with minor changes.
My experience . For the base of the binding, I use passe-partout cardboard, not beer cardboard. It, unlike beer, is denser, not loose, the edges do not "shaggy" when cutting. I round all 4 corners of the sheets with a special chipboard tool, I use Zutter. Accordingly, the length of the connecting strips I have is less than the length of the sheets, and there is no need to cut them at an angle of 45 degrees. I paint the ends and perimeter of the sheets on both sides with acrylic paint using a sponge with “bang” movements). And I immediately glue the sheets to the extreme connecting strips, which will subsequently be the basis for the bookends of the album. As a result, I get this "skeleton" of the album:

Here you can see how wonderfully the album opens in such a binding and how I glue the connecting strips to the sheets with rounded corners:

2. Now you can go directly to the cover. You will need any dense chipboard - bookbinding or beer cardboard, cardboard for passe-partout, etc. (except for corrugated cardboard) - for the top and bottom covers, and a piece of thin cardboard (I have photo cardboard) for the spine.

3. Cut out 2 rectangles from the chipboard for the covers.

It is important! If you also decide to make an album with rounded corners, pay attention: on the covers we round the corners only on one side, far from the spine.
My experience . I often get asked about the size of the cover. I most often make the cover the same size as the album sheets. In this case, in a vertical position, the sheets, like the cover, will "stand" on the shelf, and not be in a sagging position, which can lead to deformation of the binding. Visually, the cover will look more than sheets, because. will be covered in fabric. Compromise)

4 . From thin cardboard we prepare a part for the spine. Its height should be equal to the height of the covers, and its width should be equal to the width of the binding plus 5 cm (2.5 cm for the folds on both sides). Creasing (drawing fold lines) at a distance of 2.5 cm from the edges of the part:

Trying on:

Sits perfect! We draw several lines with a creasing tool on the central part of the spine at a distance of 0.5 cm from each other so that the spine bends smoothly when opening the album:

5 . Now we are preparing a fabric for the cover and a synthetic winterizer for softness / plumpness). We carefully iron the fabric, and if possible, we also starch it.

A synthetic winterizer must be glued to each part of the cover.
It is important! It is undesirable to use Moment glue to fix the padding polyester - it will corrode the fibers of the padding polyester, and the material will lie in waves. On the double sided tape you can glue the synthetic winterizer, unless you plan to lay a machine line later, otherwise the needle will get stuck in adhesive layer, and the line will fail.
My experience . I glue the synthetic donut on the glue stick. I carefully coat the cardboard cover on the front side and press it against the synthetic winterizer, and then cut off the excess material around the perimeter:

In the same way, we glue the synthetic winterizer to the central part of the spine part. We bend the "ears", and coat the center with glue:

... and apply to the synthetic winterizer:

Cut off the excess around the perimeter:

6. Let's start wrapping the cover with fabric. Let's start with the details of the cover. Cut out pieces of fabric to the desired size. I leave 1.5-2 cm allowances on each side. We put the fabric face down, and on top the cover detail with the synthetic winterizer down:

We glue the allowances.
My experience . When working with fabric, I also use a glue stick. It fixes securely, leaves no marks, and if necessary, the fabric can be easily peeled off without any damage.
We start from the left edge of the cover (which will be closer to the spine).

Then we coat the top edge with glue,not reaching the left edge about 3 cm, and to the right - about 1.5 cm.

Glue the fabric. We repeat the same with the bottom edge. On the right edge, we under-glue 1.5 cm on each side. As a result, we get this picture:

It is important! If you are making ordinary corners that are not rounded, bend and glue them in any usual way, skipping the next subparagraph.

We form rounded corners. This is done very simply - just lay the fabric in an arc with your fingers, and 3 folds will form by themselves. You can lay them in one direction, I get 2 identical and 1 oncoming fold. Glue on the glue stick, carefully press:

We get a blank for the cover. Note:"ears" above and below are not glued!

From the front side:

All the same we repeat with the second detail of the cover.

Now we will cover the detail of the spine with fabric. Cut out a piece of fabric in the following dimensions:
- height = spine height + 6 cm (3 cm per hem on each side);
- width = binding width plus 3 cm (1.5 cm margin on each side).
We put the fabric face down, apply the detail of the spine with the synthetic winterizer down. We coat the upper and lower parts of the spine with glue-pencil and glue the gates.

This is what the finished box looks like from the inside:

... and outside:

7 . As a fan of stitching, I always sew the covers around the perimeter on sewing machine. But it is absolutely not necessary to do this, the result will still be good) Here, according to this scheme, I sew the bottom (back) cover:

Those. the left edge is completely, and the top-right-bottom is 3 cm short to the left seam (so as not to attach unglued "ears":

Today I'll show you a quick and easy watercolor sheet binding. It can be done in just an hour! Despite the apparent unfoundedness, it is quite reliable. An album with such binding will please you long years! This master class will consider a mini-album 15x21 cm, but by analogy, you can take sheets of A3 watercolor paper as a basis and make an album 20x25 or 20x20 cm.

Scrapbooking photo album

Whatever new technologies are offered to us modern world, the core values remain unchanged. The desire to keep in memory the most important and brightest moments of life is one of the properties of a person that cannot be influenced by any external factors. And it is also important for him to be able to touch these memories.

It is precisely this opportunity that paper photographs provide, unlike their electronic counterparts.

That is why they are stored, as before, despite the presence of all kinds of PCs, tablets and laptops, carefully compiled family albums on the shelves. That is why the independent creation of such an archive is so popular today. After all, it allows not only to arrange photos in a certain order, but also to express your attitude to the events that are reflected in them.

Advantages of scrapbooks

One of the most rewarding DIY album making techniques is scrapbooking. Firstly, because it involves the use of a wide variety of materials and allows you to fully reveal your creativity. Secondly, because you can, at your discretion, supplement it with personal notes, comments, memorable trifles accompanying the event.

And this is not all the advantages that such a photo album has. You can:

  • develop cover and binding for scrapbooking album in full accordance with your tastes or its theme;
  • choose the design of the pages as a whole, as well as think over the design features of each sheet separately;
  • create a gift option that will not only reflect your warm attitude to the recipient, but will definitely take pride of place on his shelf.

No one will deny that scrapbooks made with soul and creative imagination are real works of art, unique and original in any of their incarnations.

I hope that today's workshop on making a scrapbooking photo album will become a source of inspiration for many and clearly demonstrate how accessible this technique is even for beginners.

Simple album binding by Alena Makarova

List of required materials:

Click on the words in green to order these products from us.

  1. Heavy paper for A4 watercolors or cardstock for a larger album;
  2. Pencil;

Take a sheet of watercolor paper and on the longest side make a mark of 14.5 and 15.1 cm at the top and bottom of the sheet.

We draw fold lines at the marked points using a special tool: a creasing board or a ruler with a special nozzle.

We bend, as a result, we get 2 pages of 14.5x21 cm in size with a 6 mm jumper in the middle.

By analogy, we make 4 of the same sheets.

Cover sheet evenly thin layer glue "Pompon".

We connect it as evenly as possible with the second same bent sheet.

We perform a similar operation with the remaining sheets.

From beer cardboard we cut strips 4 mm wide (2 mm less than the distance between the glued pages) and at least 23 cm long (it can be longer, because then they will be cut anyway).

We glue them with Pompom glue as follows, leaving 1 mm from the fold lines:

ATTENTION! The resulting distance between the strips of beer cardboard at least 2 mm is necessary for the album to open later!

Then we cut off the excess - it is necessary that the cartons protrude from the spine from above and below by 3-4 mm.

Glue a piece of tack tape. I have a lilac album planned, so I chose a ribbon of the appropriate color.

Then we bend it and glue it on the back side.

We measure the resulting height and width of the spine to proceed to the cover. I get 21.7 cm by 2.5 cm. I will add 5 mm to the spine height, as well as 5 mm to the width of the pages themselves, so for the cover I will need 2 cardboard boxes measuring 22.2x15 cm.

DIY soft cover for scrapbooking album

For paperback you will need:

  1. Fabric (I will arrange 2 types of fabric. If you don't have a sewing machine or you can just use one type of fabric if you wish);
  2. Fleece to give softness and volume to the cover;
  3. Glue stick and pom pom glue.

We cut 2 sheets of beer cardboard measuring 22.2x15 cm.

For the spine of the cover, I use thin cardboard from improvised materials, often I take a folder from under watercolor sheets for this purpose. You will need a rectangle 22.2x10 cm.

Approximately in the middle we mark a rectangle 2.7x10 cm (I remind you that the width of the spine is 2.5 cm, so I added only 2 mm, you can add more, but definitely no less otherwise then it simply won’t fit into the cover).

Inside this rectangle, I mark out the creasing lines and make folds every 3 mm to get a beautiful semi-circular spine at the cover.

At a slight angle, I cut the “wings” of the spine.

I try on the binding to the spine of the cover - at this stage it is still not too late to make it bigger if suddenly it does not fit.

We glue the beer cardboard to the thin spine in the same way as in the photo, leaving 3 mm to the extreme fold line.

Do the same with the back of the cover.

Once again we try on the binding in the almost finished cover.

We draw a line on the cover at a distance of about 8 mm from the extreme fold line.

Fleece will be glued to this line.

It is necessary to make markings on the fleece itself to fit the size of the cover and then cut off the desired fragment. So it will be smoother than if you first glue it, and then cut it.

I sewed the fabric for the cover on a sewing machine. I repeat that you can use not two types of fabric, but one, all at your discretion.

Then you need to iron the fabric very carefully.

To evenly fold the fabric on the cover, you need to make a markup on the cardboard and align it with the stitching line on the fabric.

Glue it on with glue stick.

Then we turn the cover over and very abundantly coat the entire area of the spine from fleece to fleece with glue-pencil.

Carefully smooth the glued fabric using, for example, a ruler or a creasing stick.

We bend and glue the fabric on the other side.

Then we glue the fabric on top, not reaching a few centimeters to the corners.

We bend the corner but not close to the cardboard, but leaving a distance of 3 mm, this is important. No need to cut corners.

With the second movement, we complete the corner, fixing it also on the glue stick.

Do the same for the remaining 3 corners.

We put the binding into the cover so that there is an equal distance from the top and bottom relative to the cover.

We evenly cover the page and the free ends of the keeper tape with a thin layer of Pompom glue.

We fix it with a ruler so that the entire page sticks evenly. You need to glue the binding into the cover in the closed position:

We do the same with the other page.

We check: if everything is done correctly, the album should open easily and completely.

This is the finished piece for the album. IN next time I will show you the decoration of the cover and the pages inside. I look forward to your comments and questions if something was not clear. I will be very glad if you liked my master class and came in handy!

If my scrapbooking album workshop gave you new ideas and you're ready to start implementing them in the near future, a few additional recommendations can help you.

The fact is that scrapbooking, like any business, involves following a certain algorithm of actions. For best results, you should:

  • choose the theme of the album - it can be a wedding, birthday, vacation, etc.;
  • decide on the style - it is worth noting that in many respects the style is determined by the theme of the album, and it, in turn, dictates the color scheme;
  • decide what the format of the album will be: it can be a scrapbooking mini-album, as in a master class, or maybe a 15x21cm option (half of A4), 20x20 cm or 30x30.

The number of pages and, accordingly, scrapbooking album binding will depend on the number of images you intend to use in it. For small items book binding, which was already mentioned above, is more suitable; for more voluminous ones, you can use rings. Ribbons are a good alternative for rings.

If you plan to post a large number of photos, you can combine 3 photos into special deployable designs. To fasten them together, ribbons, laces or brads can also be used.

In addition, photographs can be placed directly into the album, or it is made with empty places for their placement.

Now you just have to choose the material and cover design for your scrapbook. Volumetric decorations on the cover in products with book binding are glued at the final stage, in the ring - according to your desire.

As you can see, scrapbooking offers a lot of opportunities for those who are ready to get creative. Feel free to use them - and your creation will become a real family chronicle, which captures the most exciting, most unique, most significant stages of it. It is worth both the effort and the creative energy.

Scrapbooking is the art of creating and designing original photo albums. The main goal of this direction of needlework is to turn a boring photo album into unique story from our life. In this article, you will learn the history of scrapbooking, as well as how to make an album cover, binding and secrets.

In the 16th century, notepads were popular, where they wrote down important dates, quotes, recipes and more. At the end of the 17th century, a book appeared in which there were additional blank pages so that the owner himself could paste the illustrations he liked. After the advent of color printing, collectors actively began to collect cut-out images in their albums. This was the beginning of the development of scrapbooking.

In the 19th century, when photography began to actively develop in scrapbooking, a real revolution took place: they started special pockets for photos and colored pages on their own. Girls' albums with drawings, photographs, stickers and secrets became popular. Today there are many styles of scrapbooking and it has regained popularity all over the world.

Scrapbooking album, do it yourself

Scrapbooking photo album cover

Materials:

- canvas;
- cardboard or paper with millimeter markings;
- synthetic winterizer;
- PVA;
- cardboard;
- scissors;
- eyelets;
- rings.

  • Decide on the dimensions of the album. In our master class, the album turned out to be 30 × 30.
  • With the help of a cardboard or a sheet, measure on a regular cardboard 30 cm long and 30 cm wide.

  • Cut a piece of synthetic winterizer of the same size.
  • Glue the synthetic winterizer onto the cardboard with PVA glue.
  • Cut off a square of canvas, while making a margin of 1 cm on each side, so that it is convenient to stick. Glue the canvas on the padding polyester.
  • To close sections of material, with inside a sheet of cardboard is glued. The back cover for the album is ready.

  • Glue a synthetic winterizer on the front of the cover, and canvas on top, but without a window.
  • Now carefully cut out the window and glue the edges to the cardboard.

  • Make holes for the eyelets at a distance of 2 cm from the edge.

If you want the album to be not on rings, but like a bound book, then do not make holes for the eyelets. You can decorate the cover to your liking, not necessarily the same as in the first master class.

Sheets are needed to complete the album. It is best to use cardboard. Also cut additional strips, 2-2.5 cm wide, for gluing the main sheets together. Ready-made color pages, such as paper or thin cardboard with color prints, will also come in handy.

On each strip in the center, measure a strip 2-4 mm wide, for this you can use a pen that does not write or a sharp object. This is done so that the album can store voluminous decorations, for example, convex flowers made of paper. The edges of the strips must be cut at an angle of 45 degrees on both sides. Bend the strips so that the marked strip remains in the center, and start gluing to the pages. All pages must be glued evenly so that the album also comes out even, and not skewed.

You can determine the number of pages yourself. After the middle of the album is ready, we start binding. To do this, take a gauze or bandage, cut a strip along the height of the album and at the same time 1.5-2 cm more wide. Now you need to take a piece of braid or tape and stick it on the top and bottom edges of the binding. The lace will make the edges look aesthetically pleasing, and the binding will also be more durable.

From thick paper, make a spine that completely closes the binding and protrudes 1-1.5 cm. Attach it to the album, and glue the cover on top of the folds of the spine.

Do not glue the spine itself to the binding, otherwise the pages of the album will not open freely. Open the cover and glue the protruding layer of bandage or gauze and the ends of the braid to it. The most convenient way to do this is not with PVA glue, but with a transparent “Moment”.

Everyone who wants to make a photo album plans to make it interesting, beautiful and original. Sometimes the volume of the album does not allow to place in it a large number of photos, so we offer a unique idea for its design.

Secrets is a way of arranging inscriptions, drawings or photos, which is known to every schoolgirl who had a “girl's album”. There are several options for their design for a photo album.

  1. Secrets on the basis of a postcard. Make a postcard in the background color of the album page. Glue the main photo on the front side, and a secret inside. The flip page can be secured with tape, a clasp, or a cord.
  2. Secrets in pockets. Think in advance where such a pocket will be located and make it in the color of the page. Paste the main photos on top and decorate the page. Do not forget to put a secret photo in the pocket. In the photo, it is better to make a loop or make a hole for the grommet so that it is convenient to pull it out. You can decorate the pocket in such a way that additional pictures are pasted on it and visually hidden.

Thanks to the secrets on one page of the photo album, it is easy to stick a vertical and horizontal photo. Also, the photo itself can become a pocket for another one. You can stick a photo on a postcard and glue a few more photos inside. “Sandwiches” made of photo and paper look original, thanks to which you can hide a few surprises on the page.

Do you want to stick a large photo in the album, but feel sorry for the place? Glue the photo on a piece of paper in the background color so that it is convenient to stick the fold to the base of the album. Now the large photo can open, and paste other photos under it. Secure a large photo with thread or a lock. In the same way, it is easy to paste many more photos, if instead of big photo use a few small ones, and keep the technology for secrets.

To make your album look creative, cut off the vertical or horizontal parts of individual pages and decorate them as if they were a continuation of the next page. Do not forget that it is permissible not only to stick a photo, but also to sew it on. This will add flair to ready product. Sew some photos with an accordion and fasten to a cord.

If it seems that some photos do not fit into the plot, hide them behind a decorative door. For children's albums, use drawings of flowers or animals, behind which secrets will also be hidden.
